What is going on when chickens hatch from eggs placed on the balcony? Why do chickens hatch? Recently, all parts of our country have officially entered the ground-fried egg barbecue mode. The saying goes that one minute of leaving the house, five minutes of sweating, and South Korea next door is no exception. There was a Korean man who put his eggs on the balcony. Who knew that chicks would hatch out due to the high temperature? The editor was so amazed!

What happened if chickens hatched after putting eggs on the balcony?

South Korea is facing "barbecue weather" recently. A man named Cui who lives in Gangneung City raises several chickens. Every morning, he puts the collected eggs in the refrigerator or balcony and distributes them to his relatives. Due to the hot weather recently, the hens have laid fewer eggs, and he can't remember how long these eggs have been left on the balcony. Unexpectedly, due to the continuous high temperature, chicks hatched from the eggs placed on the balcony. "The heat replaced the hen, and the chicks hatched naturally. This shows how hot the weather has been recently." Choi also said: "The chick is a precious 'family' given to me by the hot weather. I named the chick 'kkamsuni' and will raise it well."

Let’s now talk about the conditions required for eggs to hatch into chicks.

What temperature does an egg need to hatch into a chick??

The development of chicken embryos outside the mother's body mainly depends on external conditions, namely temperature, humidity, ventilation, egg transfer, etc.

(1) Temperature

Temperature is the most important condition for hatching. To ensure the appropriate temperature required for normal embryo development, high hatchability and high-quality chicks can be obtained.

1. The optimum temperature range for embryonic development and the optimum temperature for incubation. Chicken embryo development has a certain ability to adapt to the ambient temperature. Some eggs can hatch at a temperature of 35 to 40.5°C (95 to 105F). However, if an electric incubator is used for incubation, the above temperature is not the optimal temperature for embryonic development. As long as the ambient temperature is controlled, the optimal incubation temperature for a three-dimensional incubator is 37.8°C or 10F. During the hatching period, the temperature is 37~37.5℃.

2. Effects of High and Low Temperatures on Embryonic Development

(1) Effects of High Temperature Embryos develop rapidly under high temperatures, the incubation period is shortened, and embryonic mortality increases. Chick quality decreases. The level of mortality varies with the magnitude and duration of temperature increase. If the incubation temperature exceeds 42°C, the embryo will die in 2 to 3 hours. When the incubation temperature of embryonated eggs reaches 47°C after 5 days of incubation, all eggs will die within 2 hours. After 16 days of incubation, the hatching rate dropped slightly after 24 hours at 40.6°C (104F); after 9 hours at 43.3°C (110F), the hatching rate dropped seriously; after 3 hours at 46.1°C or 1 hour at 48.9°C (120F) hours, all embryos will die.

(2) Effects of low temperature: Embryonic development is retarded at low temperature, the incubation period is prolonged, and mortality is increased. When the incubation temperature is 35.6°C (96F), most embryos die inside the shell. Smaller deviations from the upper and lower limits of the optimal temperature will have a smaller inhibitory effect on embryonic development after 10 days of incubation, because at this time, the self-temperature of the embryonated egg can play an appropriate regulatory role.

3. Variable temperature incubation and constant temperature incubation systems. Currently, there are two opinions on the temperature of chicken incubation in my country: one advocates variable temperature incubation, and the other uses constant temperature incubation. Both of these two incubation temperature systems can achieve high hatchability rates.

(1) Variable temperature incubation method (stage cooling method) Variable temperature incubation method advocates giving different incubation temperatures according to different incubators, different environmental temperatures (mainly the incubation room temperature) and different embryonic ages of the chickens. The reasons are: ① Both natural hatching (brooding chicken hatching) and traditional Chinese hatching methods have high hatching rates, and they are both variable-temperature hatching; ② Embryos of different embryonic ages require different development temperatures.

(2) Constant temperature incubation method The incubation temperature of the chicken during the 21-day incubation period is divided into: 1 to 19 days, 37.8°C; 19 to 21 days, 37-37.5°C (or the incubation temperature recommended by the incubator manufacturer). Under normal circumstances, a constant temperature incubation ratio is used in both stages, and the temperature of the incubation room must be maintained at 22 to 26°C. Below this temperature, exhaust gas, hot air or stoves should be used for heating; if the room temperature is unconditionally raised, the incubation temperature should be increased by 0.5 to 0.7°C; above this temperature, windows should be opened or mechanical exhaust (or even artificially sent in cold air) ) cooling. If the cooling effect is not ideal, consider lowering the incubation temperature appropriately (by 0.2 to 0.6°C).

Life skills suitable for every family: Carton hatching

Use a cardboard box (or wooden box) to hatch chicks. It can hatch 30-60 eggs at a time. It is simple and easy to do. Every family can hatch. The method of hatching is: ;Choose a carton (or wooden box) according to the number of hatching eggs, cover the bottom and four walls of the box with paper, and lay half-inch thick cotton on the bottom and around the box. Place the selected eggs into the box. Generally, it cannot exceed three layers. Put a thermometer on the eggs and cover the box tightly with a quilt to keep the temperature in the box at 38-39 degrees. It is best to turn the eggs every 6-8 hours to keep the temperature uniform. When the eggs are hatched to 19 days, place the eggs with their heads upward and surround them with cotton. Cool the eggs every 3 hours or so for 1-2 minutes each time. The chicks will emerge after 1-2 days.

Attention, when choosing eggs for hatching chicks, pay attention: oblong eggs are produced by hens, and eggs that are nearly round are produced by roosters.
