On average, about 100 trains and more than 600 tons of various fresh products such as live pigs and cattle, vegetables and fruits, and aquatic products are inspected and released every day, covering More than 80% of Macao’s people’s livelihood needs. As the Spring Festival approaches, the demand in the Macau market has increased significantly, and more vehicles are transporting fresh products through Gongbei Port than usual.
At 7 o'clock in the morning, a truck full of live pigs was parked steadily next to the special inspection platform. Huang Jianzhi, a customs officer at the Gongbei Customs Gate, carefully inspected each live pig. Each pig has a pin stamp of the registered farm number, and each vehicle has a unique seal number. These are checked one by one to ensure the quality and safety of each live pig. As for the "special smell" that permeates the inspection platform that others cannot tolerate, he said with a smile that he "has long been used to it."
In order to improve the customs clearance time of fresh products supplied to Macao, the gate customs of Gongbei Customs has implemented customs clearance convenience measures such as advance declaration, centralized declaration, and appointment declaration. From January 1st to 25th, Zhakou Customs inspected and released a total of 2,735 trains of fresh products, with a cargo weight of approximately 13,000 tons, an increase of 3.89 times compared with the same period last year.
In view of the fresh, perishable and fragile characteristics of fresh aquatic products supplied to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Customs under Gongbei Customs has opened a special window and green channel for rapid customs clearance, giving full play to the advantages of 24-hour customs clearance and implementing the "declaration in advance, arrival at any time" Inspection and immediate release.” In addition, the Taiqiao Customs has also established a "point-to-point" emergency customs clearance communication channel with the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Taiqiao Port Aquatic Inspection Station to formulate a special emergency plan. From January 1st to 25th, Daqiao Customs inspected and released 937 batches of fresh aquatic products supplied to Hong Kong, with a cargo weight of 1,457.06 tons, an increase of 98.10% and 50.86% respectively compared with the same period last year.

As the demand for pork in Hong Kong and Macao increases before the holiday, the staff at Zhuhai Doumen Live Pig Transfer Station have been busier than usual in recent days. At around 4 a.m., a large truck carrying live pigs from Guangxi stopped at the door. Wang Dongtao, a customs officer from the Doumen Customs Inspection Section of Gongbei Customs, and his colleagues walked to the car and used a flashlight to check the status of the live pigs in the car. They also used an infrared thermometer to measure the pigs' body temperature to confirm whether the pigs were in normal condition. After more than an hour of operation, all the live pigs were transferred to the Guangdong-Macao cross-border transport vehicles that had been disinfected and transported to the Macao market via Gongbei Port that morning. According to reports, there are currently about 200 live pigs exported through the barge station every day, an increase of about 10% compared with usual days.
In the past few years, due to factors such as rising pork prices, the supply of local live pigs in Guangdong exceeded demand. In order to ensure the safety and sufficient supply of live pigs to Macao, with the support of customs and other departments, Zhuhai Doumen built a live pig transfer station for Macao and opened it in 2020 It was officially put into use in May of this year, and the source of Australian pigs has rapidly expanded from Guangdong to Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi and other places. Since it was put into use, the station has supplied more than 100,000 live pigs to Hong Kong and Macao, playing an important role in stabilizing local pork prices.
Also "sprinting" to ensure supply during the Spring Festival is the Zhuhai Gongao Vegetable Processing and Distribution Center located in Warwick Road, Zhuhai City. On the eve of the Spring Festival, as many as 200 tons of vegetables for Macao were shipped from the center every day, accounting for nearly 70% of the fresh vegetables supplied to Macao from the mainland.
