On the afternoon of November 9, local time, Zheng Shaoxiong, a Chinese student who graduated from the school this summer, was robbed with a gun in a neighborhood near the University of Chicago and unfortunately died. In January this year, Fan Yiran, a doctoral student at the University of Chicago, was shot and killed near the school.
American CBS (CBS) reported that students, parents and professors participated in the rally. They held signs such as "We are here to learn, not to die", "We want to be safe" and "Who is next?" " and other handwritten signs protested the frequent violence near the school, and listed eight demands, including expanding the frequency and coverage of student shuttles, real-time alerts on crimes in high-risk areas near schools, and annual safety inspections for students and staff and security training, etc.

CBS quoted Andra Ji, a parent of students who participated in the rally, as saying, "This can happen to anyone, and I think cities and schools need to do more." A University of Chicago spokesperson said they have increased university police patrols and are working with the city on security strategies.
