AlUla, Saudi Arabia, March 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The "AlUla Moments" event and the Saudi Arabian Hot Air Balloon Federation (SAHAB) jointly broke the Guinness Book of World's Largest Hot Air Balloon Luminous Show world record.
This record was set on March 1, 2022 near Hegra, the site of Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hegra ruins are famous for their more than 100 carefully carved Nabataean tombs, which are scattered in an orderly manner on sandstone mountains. The tombs are engraved with inscriptions and symbols from more than 2,000 years ago and are still well preserved.
On this ancient site, a total of 142 shining hot air balloons lined up for a performance, lighting up the entire night sky and creating a spectacular backdrop against the rocky desert scenery.
’s previous Guinness World Record also fell to Al Ula, which was obtained at the 2019 Tantora Winter Festival Art and Culture Ceremony, when 100 hot air balloons filled the sky.
This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Royal Council of AlUla (RCU) and the Saudi Arabian Hot Air Balloon Federation (SAHAB) on March 1, 2022, making AlUla the capital city for hot air ballooning in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The world’s largest hot air balloon light show on March 1, 2022 is part of the “AlUla Skies” event, a new celebration on the “AlUla Moments” event calendar. Celebrations include sunrise and sunset balloon experiences. Every morning, approximately 150 hot air balloons float over this breathtaking ancient site.
This is not the first time Al Ula has broken a world record. Malaya is a multi-purpose conference and entertainment venue that holds the Guinness World Record title for "the world's largest mirrored building". The mirrored area in the building reaches 9,740 square meters, proudly presenting a mirage landscape of the Assal Valley's winding mountains and desert scenery.
The Al Ula Moments winter event calendar is designed to provide engaging art, music and cultural experiences inspired by civilized places that offer an immersive, almost physical beauty. These activities will last until the end of March 2022 along with the "Al Ula Health Festival" and the "Al Ula Art Festival".
