Fan Zhongyan's father, Fan Yong, was originally an official in Wuyue. In 978 AD, he followed King Zhongyi of Wuyue Qian Chu to return to the Northern Song Dynasty and served as the Secretary of the Military Festival in Wuning.
Fan Yong lost his wife in his early years and remarried Xie. Song Taizong Fan Zhongyan was born on Dingchou Day (October 1) in August, the second year of Duangong's reign (989), in the official residence of Jieduzhang Secretary of Xuzhou.
In 990 AD, Fan Yong unfortunately died of illness. Because Fan Yong was an honest official and his family had no savings, in order to make a living, Xie took her 2-year-old son to marry Zhu Wenhan, a native of Changshan, Zizhou. Fan Zhongyan also changed his surname to Zhushuo (yuè).
Zhu said that when he was a child, his mother asked him to learn business and strive to become financially independent as soon as possible. However, he couldn't stand the hypocrisy and profit-seeking of businessmen, so he ran home after studying for a month.
Zhu said he asked his mother to continue studying. His idea was supported not only by his mother, but also by his stepfather Zhu Wenhan.
Zhu Shuo then went to Liquan Temple (in Zouping, Shandong) to study and worshiped the eminent monk Baozhi as his teacher. In order to save money, he insisted on cooking only one bowl of porridge every day. After cooling, he divided it into 4 pieces, then sprinkled a little salt and minced vegetables, and ate 2 pieces in the morning and evening every day.
In 1011 AD, Zhu Shuo learned of his life experience and went to Nanying Tianfu (today's Shangqiu, Henan) to study under Qi Tongwen.

In the winter of 2016, Fan Zhongyan visited the Taiji Cave in Guangde, Guangde (belonging to Xuancheng, Anhui), and inscribed "Xi Ranyan" with his own hands and signed it as "Song Jinshi Zhu Shuo". This ruins are well preserved to this day.
1017, Zhu Shuo moved to Wenlinlang and changed to Jiqingjun Jiedu to promote officials. This year, Zhu Shuo was 29 years old. After discussing with his mother, he decided to recognize his ancestor and return to the clan and change his surname back to Fan.
So, he wrote to the court and requested to change his surname. He quoted the stories of Fan Li and Fan Sui and said: "The name is not Ba Yue, but he took a boat to Tao Zhu. He was determined to surrender to Qin, so he called his husband Zhang Lu when he entered the country."
With the approval of the imperial court, Zhu said it was official. Changed his name to Fan Zhongyan.
Fan Zhongyan wrote in "Jin Zai Rong Fu": "If you are ordered to distinguish beauties, I would like to serve as a model for Xuanyuan; if you want to eliminate disasters, please use them as generals." In " Yueyang Tower " he wrote: "First of all, the world is worried. Worry, and then enjoy the happiness of the world." This is a true portrayal of his life ambition.
