History of the School of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

The British School of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, founded by Donald Robertson in 2003, has been committed to teaching cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy based on evidence and science since its inception. Based on evidence and science, which means that the content taught in the course is based on experimental research and clinical research. It can be said that everything in the course is based on empirical research and is recognized by the British Psychological Society as part of continuing professional development.

School of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy has a high reputation in the UK. It is the first and perhaps the only training school in the UK that emphasizes evidence. Currently, the trademark hypno-CBT has been registered in the UK. The British Psychological Society is the UK's main professional association and the only association within psychology.

In 2007, the British College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy's Cognitive Behavioral Hypnosis course received external accreditation (NCFE) and is approved by the leading body for hypnotherapy (NCH/GHR). Mark Davis took over as the dean of the college in 2013 and designed the courses to be more accessible and digestible for students.

students do not need to have a graduate degree in biological sciences, neurosciences, or clinical sciences to learn well. Prior to this, the college has accepted psychological counselors and therapists from all over the world to study. In 2016, through the China Psychologists Congress, we came to China and brought cognitive behavioral hypnosis courses to China.

What is evidence-based, science-based?

This is cognitive behavioral hypnosis taught at a British college. It is the biggest difference from other hypnosis courses in China.

is based on evidence, partly based on experimental research. For example, regarding hypnotic questions, how does hypnosis work? What happens when people enter hypnosis? How do we measure it? These have all been conducted in laboratory studies under strictly controlled variable conditions. The other part of

is based on clinical research. Clinical research needs to find out the uses of hypnosis. For example, can hypnosis be used to quit smoking? Can it be used to relieve pain? This is also what other hypnosis courses on the market claim can be done, but we should have the ability to understand which ones are proven and which ones are not. This is called evidence-based.

And science-based means that our explanation of how hypnosis works is based on known science. For example, from a physiological perspective, how thoughts affect physiology; or from a neuropsychological perspective, how the brain and body work together. It is not based on some external mysterious forces that cannot be quantified, observed or measured.

The background and history of cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy

Cognitive hypnotherapy was actually launched in 1994, and a special edition of the Journal of Psychotherapy was published dedicated to cognitive hypnotherapy. This edition was later edited by Dr. Arsen Aladdin, whose leading researcher published six key articles on cognitive hypnotherapy.

In 2000, Professor Thomas Dodd published the book "Cognitive Hypnotherapy", with Aaron T. Baker writing the preface. Dr. Arsen Aladdin later continued to publish books under this title and conducted research on CBT and CBH(CH). In 2006, UK universities provided the first comprehensive training in CBH. (Note: Cognitive hypnotherapy CH and cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy CBH are synonyms)

The combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnosis has a short history, and many behavioral therapists, cognitive therapists, cognitive behavioral therapy Teachers use hypnosis in practical applications.

So, how exactly do cognitive behavioral therapy and hypnosis integrate? Cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapy is "cognitive-behavioral" in three aspects, including the hypnosis model, case conceptualization, and use of intervention. The two therapies have many things in common, such as the fact that they involve the same cognitive processes (focused thinking and imagination, expectations, and attitudes). Because of this, CBT and hypnosis are a perfect match.

So what exactly is cognitive behavioral hypnosis?

Cognitive behavioral hypnosis is the integration of hypnosis and CBT, not a simple combination - in fact, the simple combination of CBT and hypnosis also has a multiplier effect. This integration involves the interplay of both approaches, bringing additional benefits.

·Cognitive behavioral hypnosis uses the cognitive behavioral model of hypnosis (non-state model).

·Focus on the key idea of suggestibility (rather than the feeling of trance).

·The client and the therapist are a "collaborative alliance" that requires the client and the therapist to jointly determine treatment goals regarding the problems they want to solve.

·The client is a subjective and active role, not just "lying there waiting for hypnosis".

·Focus on identifying and changing the underlying emotions, behaviors, and cognitive habits that maintain problems, pay attention to psychological education, and pay more attention to teaching and rehearsing coping skills.

Hypnotherapy also has some possible adjunctive uses, but the therapist must be an experienced practitioner. If you are new to medical treatment, it is not recommended to use cognitive behavioral hypnotherapy directly for this kind of auxiliary treatment. These auxiliary treatments include psychosomatic diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, various skin diseases, chronic pain management and related interpersonal problems, etc. .

Cognitive Behavioral Hypnosis Professional Course Settings

Cognitive Behavioral Hypnosis Professional has 15 hours of online theoretical training and 110 hours of offline training. The offline practical training is divided into three stages, each stage lasts 5 days, including 5% collective practice, 30% theoretical explanation, 40% 2-person group practice, and 25% in-group discussion and Q&A.

First we will conduct a practice for all students. In the first phase of offline courses, this group exercise is mainly "Floating Leaves on the River", which is a dehypnotic exercise that allows students to maintain a certain kind of focused imagination.

Then we will ask and answer questions from the previous day (or online). This section is an integral part of the course. After the answers are completed, the new concepts, theories, and scripts to be learned today will be introduced, from explanation to demonstration. Then two people work in groups for practice and feedback. After practice, they are brought back to the group for discussion. When the course is over for the day, conduct an end-of-day summary. Offline training settings like

can ensure that our students learn, master and apply new knowledge and scripts. At the same time, after each stage of offline learning, we give students practical assignments, which require them to record themselves or submit practice reports. We also organize online Q&A sessions for students’ questions, so that students can practice more, better understand and master the application methods of various scripts in cognitive behavioral hypnosis. After

students pass this series of learning arrangements and practical exercises, they also need to complete the designated assignments at each stage. After evaluation, they can obtain certificates issued by the British and the School of Planning Psychologists.

Future prospects for cognitive behavioral hypnosis

First of all, we hope to cultivate more CBH model therapists or psychological counselors in China. Only such a short and effective professional training can provide these psychological counselors with a solid foundation and the ability to efficiently and quickly solve many anxiety, stress and related problems caused by them.

Second, we hope to expand the concept of “evidence-based psychotherapy.” A kind of psychological therapy is well-founded and supported by research and evidence. When using such psychological therapy and tools to receive clients, the counselor himself can be very confident because he knows that this method does not rely on his own experience. It is supported by scientific research results. This is also the kind of psychotherapy we always want to popularize.

again, implements formal evaluation and professional registration for cognitive behavioral hypnosis. In the UK, we have some formal assessment methods for students, but they have not been introduced to China yet: students need to pass this assessment by submitting a personal report and answering questions to obtain a recognized cognitive behavioral hypnotist qualification. prove.

is also a professional registration company. We want to be a professional registration and evaluation organization in China and coordinate the arrangements for evaluation and registration. To register in the UK, students need to upload their own materials and spend money for certification every year.

Finally, supervision and community. Cultivate more Chinese-speaking supervisors to supervise students learning cognitive behavioral hypnosis, and also recommend peer supervision. In addition to the ongoing online community activities scheduled in our courses, we hope to provide qualified cognitive behavioral hypnotists with some platforms and larger communities to share cases, techniques and gain peer support.
