The smartphone market is not booming in the peak season in the second half of this year, and mobile phone chip factories are still busy preparing for new products. Since the highest-end processors mainly produced by Qualcomm and MediaTek (2454) are manufactured by Samsung and TSMC respectively, the outcome of the two parties is expected to be The clarity at the end of October also represents the strength of the downstream supply chain's momentum in the first quarter of next year.
The smartphone market in the third quarter was mediocre, but thanks to the effect of new mobile phone clients and the slight improvement in demand in emerging countries, this quarter is still the best quarter for mobile phone chip manufacturer MediaTek this year.
In comparison, Qualcomm is stuck with its major customer Samsung switching to its own chips. This year’s flagship chip, the highest-end Snapdragon 810, has reported overheating issues, affecting sales to end customers, and the progress in collecting royalties in mainland China is slow. Expected to be smooth, operations this year have declined quarter by quarter, and operations this quarter remain conservative.
Although the market conditions are mediocre in the second half of the year, the two major mobile phone chips are still actively preparing for the PK competition of new products on the client side. Currently, the main one is the Snapdragon 820, the highest-end processor that Qualcomm has switched to Samsung's 14nm process and will be the main product next year. MediaTek's highest-end chip "Helio x20" is still manufactured by TSMC using a 20nm process.
Among them, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 has abandoned the direct use of ARM architecture and eight-core design in order to solve the overheating problem of this year's flagship Snapdragon 810, and has replaced it with its own customized Kyro CPU with a four-core design, announcing its withdrawal from many markets. In core competition, the computing speed can still reach up to 2.2 GHz.
MediaTek's "Helio x20" is the first cluster design. The performance designs are 2.5Ghz, 2.0Ghz and 1.4Ghz respectively. We hope to find the best value in performance and power saving.
Currently, ASUS, Xiaomi, etc. have reported that they will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor, and HTC, OPPO, Vivo, Meizu, etc. may also launch cases for the "Helio x20". The mobile phone chip supply chain pointed out that since the client design certification is still in progress, the results of the client PK competition between the two parties are expected to be announced by the end of October.
