When communicating with orchid friends, people often say: Use soda water to water orchid , which is very effective? For those who have been growing orchids by conventional methods, soda may be relatively unfamiliar. soda water is mainly composed of sodium bicarbonate , commonly known as baking soda , and sodium bicarbonate is weakly alkaline.

Maybe many people have this kind of thing at home, such as families who often make bread and steamed buns will use it. So, is alkaline soda water used to water orchids? What effect does it have? In order to verify this statement, I specially conducted tracking practice in early summer.

Fortunately, soda water is not troublesome, you only need to spend a few dollars in the grocery store to buy it. I used several pots of different orchids at the same time, as the experimental subjects, and found that in specific cases, soda water does have some effect on orchids. But even so, it is not recommended that Lanyou use this on a large scale. Why?

Because watering orchids with baking soda is actually to take advantage of its alkalinity. Some of my Lanyou have used this operation before. Although they have also achieved some results, they do not understand the reason. When I don’t understand the reason, I do not recommend using some folk remedies to grow orchids. After all, any unconventional orchid cultivation method will have potential risks.

1. Improved soil

Some orchid planting materials are prepared in large proportions of soil. After long-term maintenance, soil acidification will be very serious due to the use of rainwater and chemical fertilizers. Although orchids like acidic soil to grow, they are only weakly acidic. If the soil is acidified too much, it will actually affect the growth of orchids.

At this time, if you water it with a small amount of baking soda water, you can indeed get some effects, making the pH of orchid planting materials more suitable for orchid growth. Of course, the best way is to replace the planting material.

What is said here is that some orchid friends do not understand why the orchids grow gradually worse, and accidentally use soda to achieve the effect. So they believed that orchids cannot be separated from this alkaline substance, and this idea is definitely wrong.

2. Prevent and treat diseases

Most orchid diseases and bacteria are anaerobic type and acid-loving type. In the past, a friend used fresh wood ash to prevent and control the orchids, and it was indeed difficult to achieve certain results. Using soda water to prevent orchid diseases is also used to utilize its alkalinity principle. Especially for some bacterial orchid diseases, the effect is still good.

For example, soft rot bacteria are usually lurking at the junction of the upper layer of the plant material and the reed head. If the disease is discovered earlier, spray it with baking soda water (shallow watering) to kill the bacteria. But baking soda is not a medicine after all, and it does not have any effect on all orchid diseases.

Therefore, when you find that orchids are sick, you still have to use the right medicine as soon as possible so that you can better grow orchids. Although some orchid friends have achieved certain results after using baking soda water to water orchids, the risk is still greater than the benefit if they use overclocking or excessive amounts, so it is not recommended that novices orchid friends use it.
