According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Global Quarterly Smart Home Device Tracking Report, deteriorating macroeconomic conditions have led to a sluggish outlook for global smart home device shipments. Global shipments of smart home devices are expected to fall by 2.6% to 874 million units in 2022, with video entertainment devices such as smart speakers and TVs and streaming media devices bearing the brunt.
Smart speakers have become the largest category and main driver of smart home devices, but now in mature markets such as the United States and China, the luster of these products has largely faded, and the category shipments are expected to decline in the long term. Meanwhile, smart speakers will now rely on emerging markets and places like Europe, where language and lack of service have been barriers to widespread adoption in the past. The
report pointed out that although the global smart home device market is expected to recover in 2023, it will maintain a relatively low growth of 4.6%, and most of the growth drivers will come from emerging markets and places such as China.
Among other product categories, home monitoring/security products such as cameras, doorbells or door locks, and smart lighting and video entertainment products will account for the largest share in the smart home market and experience high growth rates.
