Friends who know something about Wang Hongwen's history know that he started his career by "rebellion". At that time, there were a lot of "rebels" in Shanghai, and many of them were dissatisfied with Wang Hongwen. Geng Jinzhang repeatedly opposed him and became Wang Hongwen's mortal enemy. Wang Hongwen's background was hard enough. In order to have enough to eat, he let pigs go to the landlord's house. But Geng Jinzhang's background was even more difficult than that of Wang Hongwen. He was from Caozhou, Shandong. His father died when he was 5 years old, and his mother also died of illness when he was 8 years old. He became an orphan at a young age.

An eight-year-old child has no ability to make a living on his own. He can only beg from door to door and experience all the hardships in the world. As he grew older, he began to work part-time jobs. Later, when the Kuomintang army was recruiting soldiers, he signed up. In the Battle of Jinan , the national army was defeated and Geng Jinzhang was captured. After some education, he joined the People's Liberation Army. In the subsequent battles, Geng Jinzhang performed very bravely and made many meritorious deeds, and was promoted from soldier to deputy platoon leader.

In 1957, Geng Jinzhang was demobilized from the army and was assigned to work as a beater at the Shanghai Zhongni Paper Mill. He was later promoted to deputy foreman. After the "Cultural Revolution" began, Wang Hongwen established the "General Department of Industry", and Geng Jinzhang also joined. At that time, he was still an ordinary soldier under Wang Hongwen and did not attract any attention. During the "Anting Incident", Wang Hongwen and Zhang Chunqiao reached an agreement and returned to Shanghai with some of the "rebel" members. The remaining group of people advocated continuing to go north.

But Wang Hongwen has left, and there is no leader. At this time, Geng Jinzhang took the initiative to stand up. He was a party member, a soldier, and had good eloquence, so he became the captain of this team. Afterwards, Geng Jinzhang led this group of people to continue northward, passing through Kunshan to Suzhou. After Zhang Chunqiao learned about it, he hurried over by car and negotiated with Geng Jinzhang. After the goal was achieved, Geng Jinzhang took the team back to Shanghai, and then held a meeting at the Hongdu Theater to announce the establishment of the "Second Corps to Return to Shanghai from the North", referred to as the "Second Corps", with Geng Jinzhang as the commander.

Geng Jinzhang has strong organizational skills. Under his leadership, the "Second Corps" developed very quickly, and in less than a year it had 500,000 or 600,000 people. After having sufficient capital, Geng Jinzhang was no longer willing to be Wang Hongwen's younger brother. He asked his "Second Corps" to be independent from the "General Department of Industry", but Wang Hongwen refused. Geng Jinzhang became angry and began to confront Wang Hongwen everywhere. Since the number of people in his hands was no less than that of Wang Hongwen, there was nothing Wang Hongwen could do against him.

Upon seeing this, Zhang Chunqiao summoned Geng Jinzhang many times and advised him to take into account the overall situation and not to always act against Wang Hongwen. He also advised him to disband the "Second Corps". This made Geng Jinzhang very dissatisfied and thought that he and Wang Hongwen were wearing the same pants. After the "January Storm", Zhang Chunqiao, Wang Hongwen and others seized power from the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee. They then convened a meeting with representatives of 38 other "rebel groups" to prepare for the establishment of the "Shanghai People's Commune". Geng Jinzhang and his "Second Corps" were excluded.

This made Geng Jinzhang very angry, so he united with other "rebels" and announced the establishment of the "New Shanghai People's Commune" to confront Zhang Chunqiao and Wang Hongwen. Upon seeing this, Zhang Chunqiao gave Wang Hongwen an idea and asked him to arrest Geng Jinzhang in the name of negotiation and drain his salary from under the cauldron. Soon Wang Hongwen sent a message to Geng Jinzhang, asking him to negotiate at the National Cotton Factory 31 at 8 a.m. on February 25. Geng Jinzhang came as promised, but as soon as he got out of the car, he was arrested by the little brother Wang Hongwen arranged in advance.

Under Zhang Chunqiao’s instruction, Geng Jinzhang was imprisoned in the Yangpu District Public Security Bureau and was released after more than two months. After Geng Jinzhang was captured, the "Second Corps" was leaderless and quickly collapsed. By the time he was released from prison, he had become a polished commander. Until his later years, Geng Jinzhang was still indignant about this incident. He believed that Zhang Chunqiao and Wang Hongwen were plotting against him and were not aboveboard enough. Fortunately, Geng Jinzhang became an ordinary citizen after being released from prison, so he enjoyed his old age in peace. This ending was much better than that of Wang Hongwen and Zhang Chunqiao.
