Preface
The Tao Te Ching says: "Name can be named, but not a constant name."
Everything has its own names, but these names are not constant, but will continue to change with the evolution of time and history. This is the case with the name of the thing and the place name.
The name of a city is undoubtedly the first "business card" that makes people understand it, just like the signboard when opening a store. In order to better create this "signature" and increase its popularity, many places have chosen to start with "changing their names".
From the 1980s and 1990s to the present, a "name change" has been set off in various places every once in a while, from village names to street names to one district and one city. However, some of these places where the name has been changed have received rave reviews, while others have been very "failed".
Today, let’s take a brief look at the cities that have been renamed since the founding of New China !
"failed" rename
In 2001, Huaiyin City, Jiangsu Province was renamed Huai'an City , which attracted countless criticisms. During the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties, this place was once a gathering place for " Huaiyi ". During the Spring and Autumn Period, Fuchai was dug here to Huaiyang Canal.
From then on, China Unicom Jianghuai , and Huaiyin , which communicates north and south, has become a place that military strategists must fight for. At the end of the Qin Dynasty and the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Han Xin took a sword to join the army here, writing his magnificent life and becoming a thing that countless Huaiyin people are proud of.
In the thousands of years after this, the city has been renamed many times due to taboos, but without exception, it has been changed back to the name Huaiyin. It was not until 2001 that Jiangsu formulated the "Three Huaihei Integration" strategy and decided to merge Huai'an City at the county level and Huaiyin City at the prefecture-level city.
However, during the merger process, there was a problem, that is, how to formulate the name of the newly formed city?
: In terms of historical heritage and popularity, Huaiyin is naturally better. When it comes to which one is the "big brother", Huaiyin, which is also a prefecture-level city, is more important.
However, after experts' analysis, they unanimously believed that the word "An" in " Huaian " has better meaning and is more suitable as a new city name.
Since ancient times, Huaiyin has caused frequent floods due to its well-connected water transportation, and the word "yin" is often easily linked to disasters.
In this way, Huaian County has become a prefecture-level city, making people regret that Huaiyin’s scenery is no longer beautiful.
Hubei's Xiangyang and Fancheng look at each other through Hanshui . There are endless stories between these two cities.
Ancient Fancheng belongs to Yuzhou , which was once classified under the jurisdiction of Henan, and Xiangyang belongs to Jingzhou , which belongs to Jingzhou , which belongs to www.
Xiangyang and Fancheng are both located in the Hanjiang basin. They have a superior geographical location and are naturally a must-fight place for ancient military strategists. However, Xiangyang, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack, has obviously better status, so there is also a saying that "Xiangyang is attacked by iron, Fancheng is made of water."
1949, Xiangyang and Fancheng counties were merged into one city. When changing the name, we did not choose one of these two place names with a long history, but took one of them and changed it to " Xiangfan ". The practice of
is actually understandable, because in this way, we can learn from this name that their heritage as a historical and cultural city will not bury any of them.
is just this kind of patchwork, and isn’t it annihilation for the city itself? Not only do people familiar with this city feel strange, but others will not know why when they hear such a strange name.
Many people have learned too many famous allusions from Xiangyang from books and on TV, but Xiangfan is like an inappropriate name. Although the local government has worked very hard to improve the city's image, it is still not as famous as Xiangyang.
In 2010, Hubei Province issued a notice to rename "Xiangfan" to "Xiangyang". After going around, the city was replaced by its most well-known name.
In addition, Jingzhou has also experienced a name change storm.
The situation in Jingzhou, Hubei is similar to that in Xiangyang. As one of the famous ancient cities, there are countless stories that happened in Jingzhou, such as "losing Jingzhou carelessly", "carving a boat and seeking a sword", and "returning the jade to Zhao intact".
Later, Jingzhou and Shashi merged. In order to reflect the characteristics of the two cities, the new city was named Jingshashi. However, this practice is very unfavorable to the cultural heritage of the two regions.
It was not until 1996 that Jingsha City once again restored its ancient name "Jingzhou" after careful consideration.
"Uncultured" choice
But when it comes to the city where the name change is the most failed, Huangshan is still the one that is the one that is the one that has the most failed.
Perhaps many people will ask, isn’t Huangshan very well-known? Why is its name change rated as the most failed one? This requires tracing the origin of Huangshan City.
In 1987, Huizhou City was renamed "Huangshan City", which made countless people puzzled. Huizhou was called Shezhou in ancient times, also known as Xin'an. In the third year of Xuanhe (1121 AD), it was changed to Huizhou, and this name has been used for more than 800 years.
I believe many people have heard the common saying " Huishang all over the world", and the "Hui" in this sentence comes from Huizhou. As Hui merchants travel around the country, while promoting the level of economic development, people have also become curious about Huizhou.
At the end of the Tang Dynasty , the people of the Central Plains moved south with the royal family, and a large number of industrial and technological focus gradually shifted to Southern . Driven by political and economic factors, the Jiangnan area has ushered in a period of rapid development.
Because the late emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty particularly liked Xi's ink, his hometown Shezhou also became the national ink-making center. During the reign of Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty, he believed that the name "Shezhou" did not meet his aesthetic taste, so he ordered it to be changed to "Huizhou".
Over the past few hundred years, Huimo has gained its reputation by relying on its diverse styles, peak quality and technology. Under the operation of Hui merchants, Hui Mo was spread all over the world, from princes and nobles to ordinary people, everyone knew Hui Mo.
In that era of inconvenient transportation, relying on the fame of Huizhou and Huimo, Huizhou was already a household name hundreds of years ago. Even the word "Hui" in Anhui Province also originated from this.
, but as time goes by, Huizhou merchants have long lost their glory. With the development of the times, more portable stationery such as pencils and fountain pens have gradually replaced the status of brushes and ink.
1979, Deng Xiaoping's words "Take out the Huangshan brand" aroused the interest of countless people in visiting Huangshan, and also opened the prelude to China's tourism era, pointing out a direction for countless cities eager to develop.
1987, in order to rely on Huangshan’s tourism resources to drive urban development, Huizhou was renamed "Huangshan City", simply replacing the name of a historical and cultural city with the name of a mountain, making people sigh that "there is no Huizhou in the world from now on"!
However, such naming did not achieve much results, which not only weakened Huizhou culture, but also attracted some people's dissatisfaction with Huangshan. Why is this?
It turned out that Huizhou's administrative office was located in Tunxi. After the city name was changed, Tunxi's railway stations, airports, etc. were also renamed Huangshan Railway Station , Huangshan Airport, etc. When tourists came to the station happily, they found that it was dozens of kilometers away from the real Huangshan Mountain.
"Huangshan is everywhere in southern Anhui, but when you arrive at Huangshan, you can't see the mountains" is not only a joke for tourists, but also a matter of resentment for many people, and the economic benefits of Huangshan City have not been significantly improved after the name change.
To this day, many people have begun to call for the transformation of Huangshan back to "Huizhou", which has aroused widespread discussion among many enthusiastic netizens. But changing the name is not an easy task, because the influence of a city name cannot be underestimated.
I believe everyone understands the importance of ID cards nowadays. If you want to change the city name, you will have to change the household registration information, and the additional costs, manpower and material resources are hundreds of millions, not to mention changing the various infrastructures in the city.
It’s no wonder that Vice Premier Wanli used the words “really uncultured” to criticize the local government for picking up sesame and losing watermelon after hearing about this incident.
But it’s like a coin has two sides, and there are many cities that have become famous in one fell swoop by changing their name.
is a very unfamiliar place for many people by changing its name "Dynasty and Change of Destiny"
Dayong County may be a very unfamiliar place for many people, but if we mention its current name "Zhangjiajie City", I believe everyone is familiar with it, and this also reflects the importance of an appropriate name to a city.
Since there are not many people in Dayong County, some people jokingly call this "a county town that can be visited by just one cigarette."
Faced with the rapid development of major cities, Dayong also wants to develop. But how easy is it for a small county town that is short of people and money?
As the saying goes, "By the mountain and eat the mountain". Although Dayong is poor, the scenery is very beautiful. Near it, there is also China's first national forest park - Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Everyone knows Zhangjiajie, but no one knows Dayong County. If that's the case, why not change the name?
Therefore, with the approval of the State Council, in 1994, Dayong abolished the county and established a city, and officially renamed it Zhangjiajie City. What followed was reports of its name change by major media. Dayong has changed the past scene of no one caring about it, and many companies are rushing to come here to invest.
Various types of shopping malls, railway stations, airports and other infrastructure and transportation projects have been launched in Zhangjiajie City. Its popularity has also soared rapidly, and it has become one of the best tourist cities in my country in just a few years.
In addition, when you hear Guan County, Nanping County, Zhongxun County and Chong'an County, you may feel that it is not known, but you may have heard of their current names. They are Dujiangyan City, Jiuzhaigou County, Shangri-La and Wuyishan City .
This is the rapid increase in competitiveness and popularity brought about by the city’s name change.
is also named after a famous local scenic spot. Why did Huangshan fail but they succeed? Ultimately, it depends on whether policies can keep up with the pace of urban development.
After Zhangjiajie changed its name, it attracted investment through publicity and scenic spots, and strived to improve infrastructure and improve people's livelihood. When people's livelihood and welfare are improved, people's sense of identity with this land will also be greatly improved.
The people of Dayong no longer complain about the hard days they once were, but look forward and devote themselves to the construction of Zhangjiajie, and continue to strive for their better life.
Dujiangyan As a famous water conservancy project in ancient my country, it has nurtured a land of water and soil for thousands of years and cultivated a profound historical heritage. With the popularity of this project, Dujiangyan City's economy has ushered in a stage of rapid development.
After gaining a certain popularity in the tourism industry, Dujiangyan City began to vigorously promote another well-known attraction in its jurisdiction - Qingchengshan . As one of the birthplaces of Taoist , there are unique Taoist thoughts , food culture and health preservation.
In order to highlight the cultural connotation of Qingcheng Mountain, Dujiangyan City has put forward a promotional slogan "Waiting for Dujiangyan and asking about Qingcheng Mountain".
Under the strong publicity of the local government, the sign of Qingcheng Mountain has become louder and louder. Dujiangyan City has also passed the test and was named a famous historical and cultural city in China and one of the world's famous attractions.
As for Wuyishan , they firmly grasped their cultural characteristics, combined with Zhuzi culture, tea culture and Minyue culture, took its essence and removed its dross, and finally established the brand of "double world heritage" with excellent traditional culture...
And these successful cities have achieved the administrative division name consistent with the purpose of tourism without exception, and have enhanced social recognition through unified caliber, thus successfully building their own city brand.
In addition to this, there are still many cities that are still brewing a "name change plan" under the name of "cultural reconstruction".
If Shijiazhuang City wants to be renamed Zhengding City or Xibaipo City. As a city in the central part of Shijiazhuang, Zhengding County is not only convenient for transportation, but also has a profound historical heritage. It is also the hometown of famous soldiers Zhao Yun.
As for Xibaipo, I believe that those who know some knowledge of modern history will not be unfamiliar with it. The Xibaipo Conference that took place here is of great significance to our party.
Henan Linzhou is also a strange existence to many people, but the Hongqi Canal project in its territory is the "artificial world" created by countless Chinese people with their perseverance and overcoming all difficulties.
However, Linzhou 's popularity is far less than that of Hongqi Canal , so the Linzhou government had the idea of changing the county name to Hongqi Canal City. There are also news that Xinzheng City plans to be changed to "Xuanyuan", Shuicheng and Xinhuang compete for "Yarang", etc. are endless.
It is understandable that cities want to seek development, but relying solely on changing their name and "changing their fate" is tantamount to catching water in a bamboo basket. And aren’t those names that have been accumulated in traditional culture under the banner of culture?
You need to think about naming a child repeatedly, and you should be very cautious when changing the name of a city.
City has nurtured culture, and culture deepens the city's heritage. If you want to develop a city in the long run, it is not about how loud it is to give it a name, but whether it can pass on the culture with regional characteristics.
