Tianjin City in the early years of the Republic of China was a place where heroes gathered. If you can travel through the past and stroll in 9 Concession , you can easily encounter many well-known names in historical books, such as Puyi , Liang Qichao , Duan Qirui , Xu Shichang , Cao Kun , Sun Chuanfang , etc.
Especially those warlord leaders who were defeated in troubled times like to run to Tianjin.
You should know that war is not a joke, but a cruel struggle between life and death. So how could the warlords at that time be able to get power on and then retreat and become a free and free man?
1 Revolution is an important event in Chinese history. It overthrew the Qing government, established the republic, and ended the feudal system that ruled China for more than two thousand years. However, due to the relatively weak strength of the Revolutionary Army, Yuan Shikai finally won the revolutionary achievements and became the president of the Republic of China.
If Yuan Shikai could strictly abide by the provisional constitution of the Republic of China, he might have a good ending. Unfortunately, he was greedy and wanted to be the emperor when he became the president. As a result, he was unanimously condemned by the whole country on the day he announced his reign. Yuan Shikai was angry and afraid. As a result, he had only been emperor for 82 days and died of depression.
Although Yuan Shikai died, the Beiyang government led by him still holds the regime. However, due to the death of Yuan Shikai, the Beiyang government also became divided. In order to compete for power, various factions fought against each other. In addition, the revolutionary army in the south wanted to regain power, China entered the most turbulent era in history.
Beiyang warlord mainly consists of three factions: Anhui warlord led by Duan Qirui, Wu Peifu , Zhi warlord led by Cao Kun, and Zhang Zuolin led by Fengtian warlord . Yuan Shikai passed away and Duan Qirui took control of the regime. In order to seize power, in 1920, the Zhili clan launched a war against the Anhui clan.
In order to defeat the Anhui warlords, the Zhili warlords joined forces with the Fengtian warlords led by Zhang Zuolin. After Zhang Zuolin's years of operation, the Fengtian warlords were advanced in equipment and strong in strength. So in this war, the Anhui faction was not the opponent of the Zhifeng coalition. In the end, the Anhui faction was defeated and Duan Qirui sent a telegram to step down.
After Duan Qirui stepped down, he went to Tianjin to settle down. Tianjin is the territory of the Zhili warlord Cao Kun. This matter seems a bit incredible, but it is actually not difficult to understand. The leaders of warlords of each department have similar backgrounds, similar political concepts, and the same enemies (the revolutionary army in the south). The war between them is to be able to seize power, and there is not much hatred between them. As long as defeats the other party and loses the ability to resist, they will not be killed. After all, being a person is at the forefront, it is hard to guarantee that he will not become the one who will be defeated in the future.
After defeating the Anhui clan, the Zhifeng clans fought another war in order to seize power. This time, Zhang Zuolin was defeated and led Fengjun to retreat to the Northeast. Although Zhang Zuolin did not turn on the power to step down, the direct warlords did not kill them either. is mainly because Zhang Zuolin's power is deeply rooted in the Northeast. is known as " Northeast King ". It is basically impossible to completely eliminate him, so as long as he retreats outside the pass, he will no longer pursue him.
However, this failure made Zhang Zuolin very unwilling. In order to avenge the previous shame, Zhang Zuolin accelerated the strengthening of the army and promoted military talents in the following years, which greatly improved the strength of the Fengtian Army. In 1924, another war broke out between the Zhili and Anhui cliques. Zhang Zuolin took this opportunity to publicly condemn Cao Kun and sent troops to fight the Zhilique under the name of aiding the Anhui cliques.
In this war, Zhang Zuolin secretly contacted Feng Yuxiang . Feng Yuxiang was affiliated with the direct warlord, but Feng Yuxiang joined later and was not a direct confidant. When Cao Kun and Wu Peifu took power, they began to promote their confidants and exclude dissidents. Feng Yuxiang was excluded and became dissatisfied with Cao Kun., and Feng Yuxiang was influenced by Sun Yat-sen and was determined to respond to the revolutionary army and find an opportunity to overthrow the Beiyang government. So when Zhifeng started the war, Feng Yuxiang contacted Zhang Zuolin and wanted to take the opportunity to overthrow the Zhili warlords.
In October 1924, when Zhifeng and Feng were fighting in Shanhaiguan and other places, Feng Yunxiang, who was in Beijing, suddenly turned against each other, controlled the Beijing regime and put Cao Kun under house arrest. This directly affected the morale of the direct army, resulting in the defeat of the army led by Wu Peifu. Zhang Zuolin introduced Duan Qirui and formed a provisional government with Feng Yuxiang, and actually controlled the regime.
However, because Feng Yuxiang was deeply influenced by Sun Yat-sen, he was highly excluded in the provisional government and was sent to the northwest to lead the Northwest Army. 1925, the May 30th Massacre occurred, and anti-imperialist movements were launched across the country. Feng Yuxiang publicly expressed his support, and caused dissatisfaction among warlords such as Zhi and Feng, and began to encircle Feng Yuxiang by force. In early 1926, Feng Yuxiang was under pressure and powered on to announce his resignation.
After that, the revolutionary movement became more and more intense. The Northern Expedition Army won consecutive battles and finally attacked Beijing in 1928. Zhang Zuolin was forced to return to the Northeast, but was bombed and killed halfway. At the end of the same year, Zhang Zuolin's son Zhang Xueliang took control of the military power of the Fengtian army, announced the change of flag, and the Beiyang warlords officially ended.
Although the Beiyang warlords fought hard in the war, as long as they were powered on and off the ground, they could avoid being killed, which has become a tacit understanding. But not everyone has a good ending.
In 1948, Feng Yuxiang, who had once turned on the power, was invited to return to China from the United States to attend the CPPCC meeting. However, on the way back to China on a steamship, a fire broke out on the ship, and Feng Yuxiang unfortunately died.
Feng Yuxiang's death is very suspicious. It is very likely that he died of murder. However, because he offended too many people during his lifetime, there is still no conclusion on who was the one who attacked him until today.
