Comrade Deng Xiaoping went to France when he was young, so he was more willing to read some famous Western literary works than other older generation revolutionaries.
Many people may retort when they see this, Comrade Xiaoping clearly likes to read Chinese martial arts novels. Why do you say that he likes to read Western literary classics?
It is true that Comrade Xiaoping likes to read martial arts novels, but Comrade Xiaoping reads martial arts novels purely for resting his mind, and is a kind of leisure and relaxation.
Comrade Xiaoping said that the biggest advantage of martial arts novels is that they can’t remember them after reading them. They can read them again next time, but they are just brains.
This fully shows that Comrade Xiaoping just regards martial arts novels as a pastime and relaxes his mind on working tense.
So, why did Lantai say that Deng Xiaoping prefers to read Western literary classics?
This is of course well-founded.
1986, Deng Xiaoping met with the visiting Iceland Prime Minister Stangrimir Hermansson.
During the talks, Deng Xiaoping mentioned a literary work he had read in his early years describing the fishermen of Iceland. According to the writers at that time, the life of the fishermen of Iceland was quite hard, but I didn’t expect that Iceland changed from a backward country in Europe to a developed country in just 60 years:
A famous European writer wrote a novel called "The Fishermen of Iceland". I read it in the 1920s and learned that the living conditions of the Iceland people at that time were quite difficult... Now you are doing well and have become more developed.
"Icelandic Fisherman" is a novel created by French writer Pierre Lotti in 1886. The novel describes the tragic story of fishermen who have spent a long time on the Icelandic sea every year and often buried at the bottom of the sea; the work itself is full of distinctive humanistic care.

Another time, when Deng Xiaoping met with a Russian guest, he casually mentioned Sholokhov's "The Reclaimed Virgin Land". This is a novel that describes the Soviet agricultural collectivization movement in the 1930s.
The story that best reflects Comrade Deng Xiaoping's love for reading Western literary masterpieces is what Shen Rong, the wife of Li Pu, the former deputy president of Xinhua News Agency, mentioned in his memoirs that Comrade Xiaoping also read the 1.2 million-word Nobel Prize in Literature award-winning works, and the world-famous writer Roman Rolland " John Christopher ".

Shen Rong joined the Communist Party of China in 1938. Shen Rong's father Shen Zecang was the confidant of Chiang Kai-shek's servant room director Qian Dajun . During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Shen Rong secretly recorded top-secret information from his father's briefcase many times. These information was successively passed to Yan'an through the Chongqing Eighth Route Army Office.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Shen Rong, who had left his family, married Li Pu, a reporter from " Xinhua Daily ". In 1946, Li Pu and Shen Rong came to the "Second Field" to serve as war correspondents.
It is worth mentioning that Li Pu's sister Li Gang is the wife of Marshal Ye Jianying.
After the founding of New China, Li Pu served as deputy director of Guangdong Provincial Propaganda Department and vice president of Xinhua News Agency. He is also an associate professor at Peking University , Wuhan University , and Lanzhou University . By the way, Li Pu also briefly served as the director of the Department of Political Science at the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
1946, Shen Rong and Li Pu stayed at the headquarters of the Second Field Army as war correspondents for a long time. Shen Rong later mentioned in his memoir that Marshal Liu Bocheng and Comrade Deng Xiaoping loved reading very much, and even when they were marching, they could not put it down.
Shen Rong said that once he had just arrived at the campsite and his luggage had not been opened on the kang, Marshal Liu Bocheng started reading under a dim oil lamp. Through conversations with Marshal Liu Bocheng, Shen Rong found that Marshal Liu Bocheng is very familiar with Lu Xun's works, and this familiarity must be achieved by reading Lu Xun's works repeatedly.
. In Shen Rong's writing, Comrade Deng Xiaoping was even more interesting in reading. At that time, she knew she wanted to be a war reporter, so she brought a set of "John Christopher" by Roman Rolland.
Deng Xiaoping learned that Shen Rong brought "John Christopher", he hurriedly borrowed the set of books to read; what Shen Rong did not expect was that Comrade Deng Xiaoping had finished reading this set of books.
"John Christopher" is the work of the world-renowned writer Roman Rolland. In 1915, Roman Rolland won the Nobel Prize in Literature of that year for "John Christopher".
