11. One day after the liberation of Guangdong in , the midwife of Shaoguan Laboratory Zeng Biyi just walked out of the delivery room and was stopped by the head nurse:

"Nurse Zeng, the dean is looking for you and said that someone from Beijing wants to see you."

Zeng Biyi just entered the dean's office and saw a man wearing Zhongshan costume suddenly stood up and nodded respectfully to her. The dean and the head nurse next to

looked at this scene and couldn't help but widen their eyes in confusion.

Before they could ask questions, the man spoke first and said to Zeng Biyi:

"Chairman Mao sent me to come, please return to the central government to work."

As soon as these words came out, the dean and the head nurse were completely left in place.

Zeng Biyi

What is the origin of this midwife who has been in their hospital for eleven years?

What is the secret behind her?

Let's start with a gossip news twenty years ago...

Talented man and beautiful woman, tied the knot

1929 , a newspaper under the Kuomintang in Guangzhou published a gossip news:

"The leader of the Red Bandit in Renju Mountain, Gu Bai, sent armed forces to abduct the 'school beauties' of Guangzhou Industrial School and forcibly occupied him as his wife."

Since Chiang Kai-shek launched the "April 12 Coup", the Kuomintang has vigorously "suppressed the Communist Party" and created white terror, while using public opinion to stigmatize the Communist Party and mislead the people.

The newspapers and magazines within its sphere of influence publish hundreds of similar news every day.

But this gossip news has half the authenticity.

The protagonist in the news Gubai is actually the secretary of the Xunwu County Party Committee of the Communist Party of China.

At that time, he was leading the Xunwu guerrillas of the 22nd Column of the Gannan Red Army to carry out guerrilla struggles in the Renjushan generation.

On May of that year, the correspondent soldier at the foot of the mountain hurried into Gubai's camp and reported:

"Chief, someone is looking for you at the foot of the mountain, saying that it was from Nanxiong, Guangzhou, and his surname is Zeng."

Hearing this, Gubai raised his head in surprise, put down the file in his hand and ran down the mountain. After seeing the person clearly, he shouted excitedly:

"Zhaoxiu, it's you!"

Zeng Zhaoxiu

The person named Zeng Zhaoxiu , from Nanxiong, Guangzhou, and is also the person in charge of the Nanxiong Party Organization.

He and Gu Bai met during the Provincial and Hong Kong General Strike in 1925.

At that time, the two of them supported the strike together during the day and slept in the same bed at night, forming a deep friendship. After the struggle ended, Gu Bai and Zeng Zhaoxiu both returned to their hometowns and became the heads of party organizations in Xunwu, Jiangxi and Nanxiong, Guangzhou respectively.

After the failure of the Nanxiong riot, Zeng Zhaoxiu, wanted by the Kuomintang, accidentally saw a news from the National Daily on his way to escape:

"Xunwu Chi bandits entrenched in Renshan."

Based on this, he expected that Gu Bai must be here, so he hurried over and fled.

As soon as she saw her old friend, Zeng Zhaoxiu made a heartless request:

"My sister Zhaoci is still in Nanxiong . Is there any way to pick her up? Oh by the way, she is now renamed Zeng Biyi ."

After hearing this, Gu Bai's eyes lit up and he responded.

Gubo

In fact, when I was in Guangzhou, Gubo met Zeng Biyi, who was in the second grade at Guangdong Industrial School, several times.

Zeng Biyi is only one year younger than Gu Bai. She was an 18-year-old young girl at that time, with a slim figure and very beautiful appearance.

But unlike other delicate little girls, she doesn’t like Hongzhuang and arms.

923 , 16-year-old Zeng Biyi listened to a speech by Li Fuchun and Cai Chang and at the Industrial School.

The revolutionary passion in her heart was aroused, and she joined the Communist Youth League and the Women's Liberation Association that year.

Later, the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party was reached, and Guangzhou became the cradle of the revolution. Various revolutionary places such as Whampoa Military Academy, agricultural lectures, and political lecture classes were blooming everywhere.

It is also because of this that Zeng Biyi was fortunate to listen to lectures by Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and others on the spot, and her ideological realm also increased day by day.

In 1925, she transferred from the Communist Youth League to the Communist Party of China and became a glorious party member.

During the Guangzhou Provincial Port strike, Zeng Biyi often went to find her brother Zeng Zhaoxiu, and naturally became familiar with Gu Bai.

Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou

The first time they met, when they looked at the handsome young man in a long gown in front of them, Zeng Biyi couldn't help but blush on her cheeks, and a slight wave in her heart gradually arose.

But she did not take this feeling from her appearance to heart.

It was not until once that Zeng Biyi accidentally heard Gu Bai’s conversation with an elder that she confirmed her feelings.

The elder looked at Gubai with a deep eyes and asked solemnly:

"From ancient times, to pave the way for a new political party, there will inevitably be many young people who sacrificed themselves. Gubai, are you really willing to be a paving stone for communism? Aren't you afraid of death?"

The next second, Zeng Biyi heard the young man's words and answered firmly:

"Those who believe are not afraid!"

At that moment, her heartbeat seemed to have a beat, and then it started to beat violently.

But girls are always young and shy. Even if they are sure that they have already developed love, they dare not express their love at all.

However, what Zeng Biyi didn't know was that Gu Bai actually developed a favorable impression on her, who was very passionate about the revolution.

Regrettably, Gu Bai, who was determined to serve the country, happened to be ordered to return to Xunwu to create a party organization, so he could only put his children's private affairs on the ground first.

Therefore, the two who fell in love with each other parted ways and never contacted each other again.

After Gu Bai left, Zeng Biyi's revolutionary career also got on the right track.

During the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, she once became the Minister of Women's Department of the Kuomintang Party Department of Nanxiong, and led the revolutionary activities in her hometown with her brother Zeng Zhaoxiu.

After Chiang Kai-shek betrayed the revolution, the brothers and sisters organized a riot in Nanxiong again.

Not long after, part of the Nanchang Uprising Army led by Zhu De, Chen Yi and others passed by Nanxiong, and Zeng Biyi and his brothers were also responsible for the work.

But as soon as Zhu and Chen's army left, the Kuomintang carried out a tragic massacre in Nanxiong.

Nanxiong County Party Committee organized a Red Guard to rise up to fight the enemy.

Zeng Biyi was as good as men, led local women to join the Red Guards and carried guns to fight.

Under the leadership of the county party committee, they not only blocked the attack of the local Kuomintang army. More than 30 local tyrants and evil gentry were also defeated, a batch of guns and ammunition was seized, and more than 20,000 kilograms of millet were confiscated, solving the food problem of poor farmers.

However, the Kuomintang was unwilling to accept the failure and gathered the enemies of Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces to take turns to "suppress" Nanxiong.

The strength of the enemy and us is too great. The Red Guards tried their best and only lasted for a few months. The Nanxiong riot was unfortunately defeated.

929 Autumn , Gubai sent three guerrilla soldiers to Nanxiong and took Zeng Biyi to Xunwurenju Mountain.

But the road is not peaceful.

people walked to Zhugaozhai at the junction of Anyuan County and Xunwu. More than a dozen bandits holding guns blocked their way.

The bandit leader surnamed Zhang. Seeing Zeng Biyi growing like a sank, he showed a wretched smile on the corner of his mouth and said, "Let her and the silver beside him, I can save you three of you."

Hearing this, several guerrilla warriors immediately stood in front of Zeng Biyi, protected him behind him, and tightened the gun in his hand.

The oldest of them was quick-witted, stared at the eyes calmly, and said to Zhang Tufizer:

"Do you know who she is? She is Gu Bai's wife who has not passed the door, so how dare you rob it?"

Gu Bai led Red Army in Xunwu to defeat the local tyrants and divide the fields, which was intimidating from all directions.

The bandit immediately changed his face when he heard his name and had to give in disappointment.

After several people successfully returned to Renju Mountain, three guerrilla soldiers told everyone about this.

made the soldiers laugh, while the person involved Zeng Biyi was so shy that her face turned red.

What’s more interesting is that even Gu Bai’s face was flushed.

After Zeng Biyi came to Renju Mountain, she worked as a cultural instructor in the guerrillas. The enemy retreated to teach the class, and the enemy came to take the gun to fight.

As the only woman here, she is enthusiastic and cheerful, brings a different kind of vitality to the team.

Gu Bai saw all this in his eyes, and his love in his heart became stronger, so he expressed his feelings to Zeng Biyi.

The two of them were originally in love, but now they broke through this window paper and came together naturally.

The story of a talented man and a beautiful woman is always a topic that people talk about.

Not long after, their relationship became widely circulated, which led to the gossip news from the Guangzhou newspaper.

What is even more unexpected is that Gu Bai actually received a congratulatory letter from Chairman Mao.

Chairman Mao

And in the letter, Chairman Mao gave clear instructions on their wedding arrangement ceremony.

held a wedding, and tried to break the rumors

1929. In order to transfer Chiang Kai-shek's "meeting to suppress" Jinggangshan , Chairman Mao and Mr. Zhu led the main force of the Red Fourth Army into Gannan .

When passing through Anyuan County, the troops were exhausted and the soldiers were in a situation where they had run out of ammunition and food.

At this time of crisis, Gu Bai rushed over and led the Red Fourth Army to the Luofuzhang Mountains in Xunwu.

Then, he used his influence in the hearts of the local people to solve the problem of food outages in the army, and also found a place for the army to settle down.

It was this timely help that made Chairman Mao remember this young man named "Gubai".

So, when he heard about Gu Bai’s love story with Zeng Biyi, he personally wrote a book to express his congratulations.

But it is better to say this order than to say it is a congratulatory letter.

Zhu De and Chairman Mao

Gu Bai carefully expanded it and saw it read:

"I heard you very happy... Congratulations from afar... The Kuomintang reactionaries slandered the Red Army's 'Communist and Wife'... This marriage seems more revolutionary. I think the happy events will be 'handled'..."

After reading the letter, Gu Bai said to Zeng Biyi:

"Chairman Mao is right, it should do this."

After Chairman Mao's guidance, Gu Bai suddenly understood:

This marriage is no longer just about the love between him and Zeng Biyi, but also about the strong evidence that can break the rumor of the Kuomintang, and it is related to the party's reputation and the future of the revolution.

That night, with the dim kerosene lamp, the couple jointly finalized a "marriage declaration":

"We are in love freely and get married... we don't sit in a sedan chair, don't worship the world... we are partners in the revolutionary journey, and we are willing to work together for the revolution for life."

Signature, both signed their names. After the finalization of

, Zeng Biyi ground ink on the side, and wrote the main pen of Gu Cypress. She copied more than 30 "marriage declarations" using burly red paper produced by Xunwu.

The next morning, just as the sky was covered with white fish belly, the guerrilla warriors rushed to various towns with these festive red papers and posted them in the most conspicuous place at the city gate.

Just like that, the people of Xunwu all knew that the Communist Party advocated freedom of marriage, and rumors in Guangzhou newspapers were also broken.

The Party Organization and the Red Army fought a beautiful turnaround in the battlefield of public opinion without gunpowder.

Gu Bai, Zeng Biyi, Gu Yimin

1930 , Zhu Mao's army entered Xunwu twice and conquered Xunwu County in one fell swoop.

At that time, the revolutionary bases of southern Jiangxi and and western Fujian were also expanding.

Therefore, some comrades have had blind optimism, and opportunism and blind activism have risen in the party.

Under such circumstances, Chairman Mao published an article "Opposing Booksism" and bluntly said:

"There is no right to speak without investigation."

And he not only said that, but also did so.

In order to purify the party's style, Chairman Mao led the lead in carrying out a large-scale rural social survey.

, Xunwu, at the junction of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces, became the target of this key investigation.

Chairman Mao appointed Gu Bai as his deputy.

In order to carry out the investigation meeting smoothly, Gu Bai worked day and night. Before the investigation officially began, he sorted out the political and economic situations of all classes in Xunwu into a book and reported to Chairman Mao.

During the investigation, because Xunwu's dialect is difficult to understand, Gu Bai started to translate again.

for more than ten days of ended, and Chairman Mao learned the real situation in Xunwu rural areas clearly.

At the same time, he also admires Gu Berry more and more.

In June of that year, both Gu and his wife were transferred to the Front Committee of the Red Fourth Army.

Gu Bai served as Secretary-General of the New Fourth Army Front Committee, fully assisting Chairman Mao in his work, and is deeply relied on.

Zeng Biyi also followed her husband and worked as a confidential secretary beside Chairman Mao, copying, organizing and custodying documents for him.

She is also Chairman Mao’s first female secretary. Although the work content of

is simple, Zeng Biyi is still very nervous.

Because she took out a copy of the documents she had in hand, she could influence the future of the revolution. If there is a slight mistake, the consequences will be unimaginable.

Once, Xinjian Transportation sent a cipher text written in a shirt.

was in a hurry to translate and copy it to the chairman, but he could not find the copy paper.

Zeng Biyi was so anxious that she stomped her feet. In the end, she had no choice but to hold her shirt and go to the chairman.

Seeing her red eyes and looking at a loss, Chairman Mao smiled gently, then he took out a few thread-bound books from his pile of books, handed them over, and spoke softly:

"Don't worry, isn't this there? Just take it apart and copy it on the page without words."

Zeng Biyi stopped her tears and took it with great gratitude.

During this period, under Chairman Mao’s personal teaching, her work ability and ideological level were constantly improving.

And Gu Bai's revolutionary cause in the Front Committee was also sing all the way, from the Secretary-General of the Front Committee to the Minister of Labor of the Jiangxi Soviet Government to the Secretary of the Party League.

Chairman Mao

In addition to his career success, Zeng Biyi and Gu Bai's five children were also born one after another.

Although the revolution is bitter, the lively and reunited family stays together and lives a perfect life.

However, the good times did not last long.

Not long after, the failure of the fifth anti-encirclement and suppression put the Red Army in a desperate situation and also brought this originally happy family of seven to a catastrophe.

Life and death separation, the revolution was not only

935, the Gu Bai and his wife did not follow the Red Army's large army, but stayed in southern Jiangxi to fight guerrillas.

The war ahead is tight, and they shuttle through the dense forest all day long, fighting against the enemy, and have no place to live.

For safety reasons, Gu Bai asked Zeng Biyi to foster the children to the countryside, and for the sake of confidentiality, the parents' names could not be disclosed.

However, before they could recover from the pain of separation of flesh and blood, the couple was forced to part.

Red Army Long March (Pictures from the Internet)

935, Gu Bai was ordered to leave Jiangxi and go to Guangdong to contact Jiangdong guerrillas.

Zeng Biyi followed the guerrillas to the mountainous area of Tingshan in Ruijin , fighting against the enemy.

Late one night, the guerrillas were surrounded by the enemy, and with the captain's order to "disperse", the soldiers immediately evacuated.

, Zeng Biyi's legs were swollen due to the marching for several days, and she was unable to keep up with the team and unfortunately fell into the opponent.

Then, she was imprisoned in Jiujiang Prison.

In prison, Zeng Biyi sat on tiger bench and was beaten to pieces by the enemy.

But even though she suffered all torture, she didn't say a word except "not knowing".

It was not until 1936 that the Kuomintang and the Communist Party reached for the second cooperation. Under the rescue of Premier Zhou, Zeng Biyi was released as a "political prisoner".

But she couldn't be happy at all.

Because it has been almost two years, but my husband Gu Bai has no news at all.

Picture from the Internet

Zeng Biyi, with a nervous heart, rushed to Ji'an to do underground work as soon as she was released from prison.

Until in the spring of 1938, she was sent to the Shaoguan Laboratory in Guangdong Province, and continued to be an intelligence officer as a cover.

Here, Zeng Biyi finally got news about Gu Bai, but it was a bolt from the blue.

It turned out that her beloved husband died in the Yuanyang Knife in Longchuan, Guangdong three years ago.

Zeng Biyi fainted on the spot and saved her life after rescue.

But in fact, it was not just her, but even Chairman Mao, who was in charge of Yan'an, only learned about the bad news in the autumn of 1937.

In the grief, Chairman Mao wrote a eulogy for his old friend with tears in his tears to express his grief:

"My friend Gu Bai is handsome and vigorous, and sacrifices his life for the country. He is worthy of mourning. I hope that the Gu compatriots will continue their will and achieve the purpose of freedom and liberation together." The Chairman's deep nostalgia for his old friend is revealed between the lines.

Later, when Zeng Biyi read this poem, she couldn't help but burst into tears.

She deeply understands the meaning of the poem, and is determined to listen to the Chairman's teachings, inherit her husband's revolutionary legacy, and turn endless lovesickness into the driving force of the revolution.

Until the national liberation, Zeng Biyi had been doing underground work in Shaoguan , and obtained a lot of valuable information for the party organization.

Gu Cypress Memorial Hall

949 , Ye Jianying and Chen Geng led the Fourth Corps of the Fourth Field Army, heading south along both sides of Guangdong-Han Road, occupying Shaoguan, and taking straight to Guangzhou.

October 14, the People's Liberation Army entered Guangzhou, and Guangdong ushered in liberation.

After this, Zeng Biyi was recalled to work in Beijing.

In Fengze Garden in Zhongnanhai, she met Chairman Mao.

Meeting again, they all remembered the old friend at the same time, and their eyes were red.

Zeng Biyi couldn't help sobbing, holding the chairman's hand, and choking with a word.

Chairman Mao felt very sorry for her when he saw her like this, so he brought a cup of tea with his own hands and comforted her softly:

"The deceased has passed away. Gu Bai has been away for 14 years, so you must also look forward."

Chairman Mao said this because Zeng Biyi has not remarried since she lost her husband and has disappeared.

Over the years, she has been living alone, so Chairman Mao also hopes that she can have a support.

Zeng Biyi also understood what he meant, but she shook her head, wiped her tears and said:

"Chairman, I have nothing to ask for now, I just want to find a few children."

With the help of the party organization, Zeng Biyi went through a lot of hardships and finally found her second son Gu Yimin in Guangdong.

Chairman Mao

Not long after, He Zizhen's sister He Yi went south to find her sister and Chairman Mao's lost son Mao Anhong, and at the same time took back her and Mao Zetan's son He Lucheng.

However, after many efforts, Mao Anyhong still had no trace, so He Yi had to take her son back to Beijing.

On the way back, she took Zeng Biyi and her son.

, but unexpectedly, when you reach Taihe , the car slipped sideways and unfortunately climbed into the ravine.

He Yi and Gu Yimin died on the spot, and the others in the car were also seriously injured.

The child he finally found was lost, and Zeng Biyi was almost on the verge of collapse.

The only belief that supports her to go on is to find several other children.

However, the other children have died, and the only hope is that the four sons remember the people.

This child has been missing after several twists and turns and is likely to be alive.

He Zizhen and He Yi

The emperor pays off his heart

In the spring of 1954, Zeng Biyi finally found the 18-year-old Gu Yimin at the Workers and Peasants Speed Study School.

She was finally able to reunite with her flesh and blood at the age of 47.

In the years since, Zeng Biyi has been working diligently and never slacked off from the China Red Cross Association to the National Revolutionary Museum.

On March 29, 1997, Zeng Biyi died in Beijing at the age of 90.

Postscript:

Gubai family sacrificed the reunion and happiness of the small family for the peace of the country.

In the revolutionary era, there were countless such family tragedies.

is their sacrifice for our peace today.

We should not forget the kindness of our ancestors, remember these tragedies of the times, and cherish the happiness of the present.
