At present, Hubei Province has 12 prefecture-level cities and 1 autonomous prefecture under its jurisdiction, with a total of 13 prefecture-level districts.

As for the zoning pattern of 10 districts and counties in Huanggang City, it has undergone several stages of change. As we all know, my country's provincial system appeared in Yuan Dynasty . After hundreds of years of adjustment and refinement in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the basic framework pattern of inland provinces has gradually formed. As of the reign of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, Hubei Province gradually formed a zoning pattern of 10 prefectures, 1 Zhili Prefecture , and 1 Zhili Department, namely: Wuchang Prefecture , Hanyang Prefecture , Anlu Prefecture , Xiangyang Prefecture , Yunyang Prefecture , De'an Prefecture , Huangzhou Prefecture, Jingzhou Prefecture , Yichang Prefecture, Shinan Prefecture, Jingmen Prefecture, and Hefeng Hall.
At that time, all counties under Huanggang City were basically under the management of Huangzhou Prefecture. Huangzhou Prefecture has 7 counties and 1 scattered prefecture, namely: Huanggang County, Huang'an County, , Macheng County, Luotian County, Qishui County, , Guangji County, Huangmei County, and Qizhou. In 1912, after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, our country entered a complex period of warlord melee. Hubei Province is geographically important, and warlords are fighting over and over again, causing great damage to the local economy. In the 1930s, Yingshan County, Anhui Province was included in the management of Hubei Province.
In a blink of an eye, it was the early stage of the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the basic end of the large-scale war, my country entered the stage of post-war reconstruction, economic development, and production recovery. Various special districts and prefecture-level cities have been established in various parts of Hubei Province.At the beginning of the establishment of the Huanggang Special Zone, there were 8 counties under its jurisdiction, namely: Huanggang County, Xishui County, Macheng County, Qichun County, Guangji County, Huangmei County, Yingshan County and Luotian County. In 1952, during the zoning changes, Huanggang District established Xinzhou County.
In the same year, four counties including Hong'an County, Echeng County, , Daye County, and Yangxin County were included in the Huanggang Special Zone for management. At this time, Huanggang District had a total of 13 counties under its jurisdiction. In the late 1950s, in the new round of zoning changes in Hubei Province, Daye County, Huanggang District, was included in the management of Huangshi City. The terrain of Huanggang is complex, with more than 10 counties in one go, which is very difficult to manage. In the 1950s and 1960s, my country's transportation and communication levels were limited, and there were too many districts and counties under its jurisdiction, which was not conducive to management.
1965, Hubei Province established the Xianning Special Zone. At the same time, Yangxin County and Echeng County in Huanggang District are included in the management of Xianning District. In the late 1960s, all special zones across the country were renamed to regions, and the Huanggang special zone was renamed to regions, and the jurisdiction was unchanged. In the late 1970s, my country's economy entered a stage of rapid economic development. In order to adapt to the needs of economic construction, various regions under the jurisdiction of various provinces in my country have gradually begun to adjust their zoning.
1979, Echeng County, Xianning area, was re-registered into Huanggang area management. At this time, the zoning of Huanggang area was adjusted to 11 counties, namely: Huanggang County, Xinzhou County, Hong'an County, Macheng County, Luotian County, Xishui County, Qichun County, Huangmei County, Guangji County, Yingshan County, and Echeng County. In the 1980s, with the continuous development of various counties in Huanggang area, Macheng County, Guangji County and Huanggang County were successively abolished, and Macheng county-level cities, Wuxue county-level cities, and Huanggang County-level cities were established.
In 1995, the Huanggang area was abolished and the Huanggang prefecture-level city was established. At the same time, Huanggang county-level cities were abolished and Huangzhou District and Tuanfeng County were established. As of this time, the zoning pattern of 1 district, 2 county-level cities and 7 counties in Huanggang City has basically been formed, with a total of 10 districts and counties under its jurisdiction.
Of course, out of the need to develop the economy, after entering the 21st century, Huanggang City has successively established several new districts such as the Economic and Technological Development Zone, the High-tech Zone, and the Chengdong New Area.
