After worshiping the Yellow Emperor's Mausoleum, he got into Jiang Dingwen's car and ran to Xi'an. Soon after, he came to Wuhan again, and issued a statement of resignation in the newspaper and surrendered to Chiang Kai-shek.

1938 During the Qingming Festival, Zhang Guotao left Yan'an on the grounds of going to visit the tomb of the Yellow Emperor Mausoleum . After worshiping the Mausoleum of Huangdi, he got on the car of Jiang Dingwen and ran to Xi'an. Soon after, he came to Wuhan again. He issued a statement of withdrawal from the party in the newspaper and defected to Jiang Kai-shek . Because he was in a hurry when he fled, Zhang Guotao did not have time to take his family with him. After he arrived in Wuhan, he wrote a letter to his wife Yang Zilie, asking her to bring her son Zhang Haiwei to Wuhan to reunite with him.

Yang Zilie found Chairman Mao, but Chairman Mao did not make things difficult for her and immediately ordered: "Let Comrade Zilie go home." Yan'an then sent a traffic officer to send Yang Zilie and her daughter to Wuhan together and hand it over to Zhang Guotao. It can be said that Chairman Mao was very righteous to Zhang Guotao. After Zhang Guotao defected to Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Kai-shek attached great importance to him at first. Not only did he meet him personally, but he also pointed at the Dai Li standing beside him and said to Zhang Guotao: I want to ask Mr. Zhang to help him.

Zhang Guotao entered Military Control Commission and became Dai Li's subordinate. Dai Li was very excited to get Zhang Guotao's "help". He thought that with Zhang Guotao's past status and influence, as long as he appealed, he could instigate many old subordinates. But he was soon disappointed because he discovered that although Zhang Guotao worked hard to win over, no old subordinate was attracted. Later, Zhang Guotao opened a spy training class. After these spies he trained were sent to Yan'an, they all went without returning.

Zhang Guotao's performance disappointed Dai Li and began to become increasingly cold towards him. Zhang Guotao often did not see Dai Li for several months. Even if they meet occasionally, they are either satirized or scolded, Zhang Guotao's life in the Military Control Commission has become increasingly sad. In March 1946, Dai Li was destroyed by a plane in Daishan, which was a huge "loss" for Chiang Kai-shek. But for Zhang Guotao, it was a good thing, because from then on, Dai Li could no longer mock or scold him.

Not long after, Zhang Guotao learned that the Military Control Commission was about to reorganize and lay off employees, and he might be laid off. In order to avoid this embarrassing situation, Zhang Guotao found his fellow villager, Xiong Shihui, and came to Jiangxi through his operation, and served as the director of the Jiangxi Branch of the General Administration of Aftermath Relief. Zhang Guotao originally thought that no one would come to cause trouble for him after coming to Jiangxi. Unexpectedly, as soon as he took office, he was excluded by the then chairman of Jiangxi Province. So why can't Wang Lingji get along with Zhang Guotao?

This is because when Zhang Guotao was still in 湖欧海 , Wang Lingji was ordered to lead his troops to attack Red Army , but he was defeated in disgrace. Not only was he removed from office, but he was also detained for several months. Wang Lingji took all the accounts to Zhang Guotao. Although Zhang Guotao has now become the Kuomintang and is in the same camp as him, Wang Lingji's old hatred cannot be eliminated, and he instructed his subordinates to sarcastically mock Zhang Guotao and deliberately make things difficult for him. Soon, Zhang Guotao was unable to gain a foothold in Jiangxi and had to avoid living in Shanghai.

After the Battle of Crossing the River , Zhang Guotao saw that the Kuomintang was in a desperate situation, so he took his family to Taiwan. He wrote letters to Chiang Kai-shek many times, saying that he was willing to continue to serve the "party-state". But a year passed, and Chiang Kai-shek neither arranged a job for him nor asked about his life, and Zhang Guotao had been forgotten. Later, his house was forcibly expropriated, and the poor Zhang Guotao knew that "the arm could not twist his thighs", so he had to bring his family to Hong Kong. Because he had no job, Zhang Guotao, who was eager to make money to support his family, was fooled and took out all his belongings of $5,000 to " gold ", but he suffered heavy losses and almost lost all his money.

It was raining all night long. Not long after, Zhang Guotao's wife Yang Zilie fell while shopping for vegetables, broke her buttocks and skeleton, becoming a lame man, and was very inconvenient to move. In order to live, Zhang Guotao looked for ways everywhere, and finally The University of Kansas in the United States agreed to pay him 2,000 Hong Kong dollars a month to write his memoirs, and the copyright belongs to him after the book is written. In other words, it is to buy the copyright of Zhang Guotao’s memoirs at the cost of HK$2,000 per month. Later, Zhang Guotao spent four years writing "My Memories".

Since the royalties are paid every month, Zhang Guotao did not get much money after the book was completed, and his life was still very difficult. In desperation, in 1968, he brought his wife to Toronto, Canada and defected to his eldest son Zhang Haiwei who taught here. At that time, Zhang Haiwei had already started a family and did not make much money, so he could only barely support the whole family. In order to reduce the burden on his son, Zhang Guotao and his wife Yang Zilie moved out and moved into a free nursing home.

1976, 79-year-old Zhang Guotao suffered a stroke suddenly, his right half of his body was paralyzed, and he could not take care of himself. Yang Zilie was also 70 years old and had a leg disability, so he was unable to take care of Zhang Guotao. Zhang Guotao had to apply for admission to the elderly hospital in the suburbs of Toronto . This is an official charity organization with very poor conditions. Zhang Guotao's health is getting worse day by day. On November 26, 1976, this day was Zhang Guotao's 82nd birthday, and Zhang Haiwei took him to his home. After his birthday, Zhang Guotao said that he would not want to return to the elderly hospital where the cold was unbearable.

But Zhang Haiwei's family is not in good condition, so they can only barely make ends meet. If Zhang Guotao was healthy, it would be a good idea to say something, but at this time he was half paralyzed and needed medicine and special people to take care of him. Zhang Haiwei really couldn't afford it, so he had to send him back to the elderly hospital. One night 7 days later, Zhang Guotao on the hospital bed brought the quilt to the ground while turning over. He rang the bell several times and no one came to the nurse. Zhang Guotao was frozen to death in the severe cold. He was buried in a Toronto cemetery two days later.

Thinking about how arrogant Zhang Guotao was when he met on the grassland. He first kept asking for office from the Central Committee, but was still not satisfied after becoming the General Political Commissar of the Red Army. Later, he insisted on going south and established a "central", and arrogantly claimed that he would expel Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and others from the party. I'm afraid he would never have thought that his old age would be so miserable. What is a good hand of cards that are so badly played, you will understand it by looking at Zhang Guotao.
