After the founding of New China, it is urgently necessary to establish international relations with countries around the world. For the first batch of diplomatic ambassadors of the New China, our country selected 12 backbone members of the army and became the first batch of general-level diplomatic ambassadors in our country. Chairman Mao was the "General Ambassadors".
Among these generals and ambassadors, Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou met with one of them.
---Geng Biao.
Because of Geng Biao at that time, he was very unwilling to understand the organization's sudden transfer of him from the army, and he was quite reluctant. At that time, he served as deputy commander and chief of staff of the 19th Corps of the First Field Army. It was a great opportunity to follow General Peng to make achievements. Geng Biao, who had been in the army for more than 20 years, was unwilling to give up this opportunity.
Zhou Enlai took the lead in talking to Geng Biao.
Most of the military commanders in the history of our army are versatile. Geng Biao, like many military commanders, is also versatile. It is said that Geng Biao has learned martial arts since childhood, knowing acupoints and qigong, and is good at Nanquan and single sword. In the early days of the War of Liberation, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party established the Beiping Military Mediation Office in Beijing in order to reconcile regional conflicts. Geng Biao served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Communist Party of China Delegation of the Executive Department of the Mediation Office.
This job is mainly dealing with the Kuomintang and is considered an internal communication matter. When Geng Biao was in charge of this job, he was highly praised by Zhou Enlai for his flexible mind and quick work. Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou named Geng Biao as the general ambassador, which to a certain extent also refers to Geng Biao's work experience some time ago.
When Zhou Enlai told Geng Biao about the name, Geng Biao was still very reluctant, but due to the sympathy and the basic principles of obeying the organization, after Premier Zhou talked to him, he happily agreed to the appointment.
On the same day, Chairman Mao invited Geng Biao to his office and met Geng Biao.
Mao Zedong's speech has always been funny and humorous. His first sentence after seeing Geng Biao was:
"Little fellow villager, why can't you figure it out, are you afraid?"
In the face of Chairman Mao's sudden question, Geng Biao was also straightforward and answered the Chairman directly.
"Chairman, look at me as a mud-legged . How do you deal with foreigners in foreign countries?"
When Mao Zedong heard Geng Biao's words, he probably understood Geng Biao's concerns. He did not think of shirking away the tasks assigned to him by the organization. Geng Biao's idea was just afraid that his ability would be insufficient, which affected China's diplomatic affairs.
Chairman Mao said earnestly:
You guys, you are not afraid of heaven or earth. What's the scary thing about foreigners? Who stipulates that the Communists' mud legs cannot be used as ambassadors or diplomats, and join United Nations ? We are not going to have gun battles, but to have verbal battles, make friends, and seek peace. Why can’t we do it? It is an important task to build a new China on the international stage. Do you have the courage to do this? Then I, Mao Zedong, misread the person.
To be honest, Mao Zedong's painless questioning really surprised him. Almost for a moment, Geng Biao felt guilty and silently lowered his head. He didn't say a word, and immediately stood attentive and saluted Mao Zedong.
Then, he blurted out:
"Ensure the completion of the task."
Geng Biao might not have thought that his diplomatic career lasted for nearly 20 years.
After Geng Biao became ambassador, his main job was to serve Nordic countries. He served as ambassador to Sweden , and also served as minister of the three countries: Denmark , Finland , and Norway . Later, he was transferred to the position of ambassador of Pakistani , ambassador of Myanmar , and ambassador of Albania .
" Silk Road " in the modern sense of China is actually Geng Biao's credit.
In 1956, Geng Biao was appointed as Pakistani ambassador. Before leaving, Chairman Mao once again received Geng Biao. When the two met, there were no unnecessary greetings. Chairman Mao even said straight to Geng Biao:
"Pakistan has more than a thousand years of historical interactions with China. They are very friendly to China. In addition to the policy of stabilizing the neighbors, you should draw the national borders between us and Pakistan and settle the accounts clearly with your brothers. The strategic position at the southwest gate is very important. You are a soldier and don't need to say more."
Geng Biao is not vague, he is still a military demeanor, and immediately stands upright to express his opinion to Chairman Mao:
"Chairman, don't worry, guarantee to complete the task."
Geng Biao also understood that diplomatic work needs to be progressive step by step. Chairman Mao and him pointed out an extremely important issue. That is how to reasonably divide national boundaries . This issue may be a minor problem in peaceful times, but it may be difficult for us to notice that our ancestors had tried every means to win a safer and more stable national defense and security field for future generations at the beginning of their founding.
When Geng Biao took office as ambassador to Pakistan, Mirza was not the president at that time. When Mirza took office as president, our country specially sent Marshal He Long to Pakistan as a special envoy to congratulate him. When Mizar learned the news, he met Geng Biao alone, hoping to learn about Marshal He Long’s deeds in advance.
But this time I chatted with Geng Biao, Mizar learned that the ambassador to Pakistan, who was also from a rank of a corps and a serious veteran soldier, Bamir and Geng Biao had a long talk all night and learned a lot about the stories about the Red Army, 25,000 miles of Long March, turning to northern Shaanxi, and the War of Liberation. Mizar applauded the story of our army's repeated miracles on the battlefield.
After the talks, President Mizar had already figured out their plans for the next one:
"You are the hero of the Long March and a veritable general. After Marshal He Long came to Bahrain, the three of us soldiers went to hunt. Hunting is the best sports for soldiers."
After the Eighth National Congress of the Party was held, Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou met Geng Biao again and arranged another task for Geng Biao. They told Geng Biao that in the past few years, they only laid a diplomatic foundation in Pakistan, and this time, they must have actual diplomatic results, expand the trade relations between the two sides, and even use this to influence the whole world.
Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou made clear demands to Geng Biao: to establish a modern Silk Road to Europe in Pakistan. This policy was called "opening the west gate" in that era and was also the diplomatic strategy to the outside world at that time.
Specifically, it mainly establishes the China-Pakistan international aviation line through the civil aviation and transportation departments of the two countries, and at the same time opens up road traffic between the two countries.
No one would have thought that China and Pakistan have made more than ten years of efforts on the road to promote this diplomatic strategy. There is an Karakoram Mountains that extends from northwest to southeast between China and Pakistan. The total length of the mountain is several hundred kilometers. There are only four words to open the road to the mountains, but it will cost a huge price to do it.
More than ten years later, the Karakoram Mountains of China and Pakistan were successfully opened to traffic, with a total length of 1,032 kilometers. In order to commemorate this great feat, the President of Pakistan specially awarded Geng Biao a medal to commend his contribution to the friendship between China and Pakistan. The President of Pakistan said at the opening ceremony:
"If the ancient "Silk Road" is a historical witness to the traditional friendship between the people of the country we come to celebrate the New Year, then the construction of Karakoram Highway is an outstanding example of the close friendship and cooperation between our two countries today."
So, you will find that the Silk Road we passed down from word to word today is not achieved out of thin air, nor is it achieved overnight. The "Modern Silk Road" trade economic belt is a benign economic policy vigorously promoted by generations of leaders of our country.
All arrangements are for a better tomorrow.
In 1980, Sino-US relations were normalized, and Geng Biao led a military delegation to visit the United States. At that time, in the United States, everyone had no good feelings about this country, and many people even refused.
When the delegation moved into Pentagon , a welcome meeting was quietly held downstairs. Everyone was very surprised and opened the window and looked out.Later, when Geng Biao's daughter Geng Ying recalled, she said she couldn't believe that the United States would hold a welcome ceremony for a military leader of a Communist country.
