"Xiao Yongyin! Charge!"
In 1986, an old but powerful voice came from the ward in a hospital in Beijing.
The nurse on night shift was startled by the sound and hurried into the house to check the situation.
Lying in this ward is Marshal Liu Bocheng, the famous "military god" in our country. At this time, Liu Shuai was already in his eighties. In addition, he was sick and his physical condition was incredibly poor. He didn't even have the strength to speak on weekdays.

Nurse found that Liu Bocheng was just talking in his sleep and had no other conditions in his body, so he felt a little relieved.
Later people learned that Xiao Yongyin, whom Liu Shuai had never forgotten in his dreams, was the most respected and favorite general under his command back then.
When Liu Shuai passed away, Deng Xiaoping was furious because the staff neglected to include Xiao Yongyin on the list of the funeral committee.
So, what kind of person is Xiao Yongyin, the one that Liu Shuai even wanted to call in his dream? What kind of past did he and Liu Shuai have that made Liu Shuai not forget to fight side by side with him in his dream?
Xiao Yongyin
"beggar" who delivered a letter for thousands of miles
In mid-July 1937, two beggars with unclothed clothes staggered to the Red Army Aid Headquarters of the Western Army in Zhenyuan County, Gansu Province.
Commander Liu Bocheng stepped forward and looked at it, and tears immediately surged up. This was clearly the West Route Army soldier who escaped from the sky.
I saw the two of them as dark as coke, and their long hair on their heads was messy, like a savage. The clothes on their bodies were already rotten, and the ripped clothes were flying around, so they could only barely cover their shame.
One of them was only in his early twenties. When he saw Liu Bocheng, he immediately shed tears and took out a well-preserved envelope from his hat.
Although his body was extremely weak, he still staggered forward a few steps and placed the letter in Liu Bocheng's hand:
"This is a letter written by Commander Xu (Marson Xu Xiangqian). Please pass it to the Party Central Committee."
After Liu Bocheng received the letter, he hurriedly held the hands of the two, and was moved for a moment and could not speak. After being silent for a long time, Liu Bocheng choked and said: "It's good to be back alive, it's not easy!"
Liu Bocheng
Liu Bocheng
The reason why Liu Bocheng was so moved was precisely because he knew very well that these two Western Army soldiers could survive and insisted on sending the letter here. It was so difficult.
Time went back to November 1936. Faced with the heavy encirclement of the Kuomintang reactionaries on Red Fourth Front Army, the Central Military Commission ordered the General Command of the Red Fourth Front Army to form the Western Route Army led by Xu Xiangqian and Chen Changhao to open up international lines and open up the Hexi base.
However, the "Four Horses" ( Ma Bufang , Ma Buqing , Ma Hongkui , Ma Hongkui , and Ma Hongbin) who have been entrenched here for many years blocked the Western Route Army in Hexi Corridor . There were encirclements in front and pursuers behind, so the Western Route Army suffered extremely heavy losses as a result.
In order to truthfully report the actual situation of the Western Route Army to the Party Central Committee, Xu Xiangqian and Chen Changhao broke the remaining team of the Western Route Army into pieces, striving to allow more soldiers to successfully break through as much as possible.
Xu Xiangqian
To reduce the target, Xu Xiangqian decided to separate from the guard platoon of the General Command, and he and Chen Changhao broke through alone. He called Xiao Yongyin, the platoon leader of the guard, and handed him the important information written to the Party Central Committee, and instructed:
"If you go to northern Shaanxi first, hand this letter to the Party Central Committee, and then talk about our situation."
Xiao Yongyin didn't know what this will mean, but Xu Xiangqian insisted on handing over the burden to him and walked resolutely into the distance.
After leaving Xu Xiangqian, the guards quickly disintegrated and many people ran away secretly. In a few days, Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi were left with only Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi.
The two had no complaints, and their death was small, but they must send important information to the Party Central Committee.
Since the failure of the Western Route Army's struggle, the Party Central Committee immediately issued an emergency order, and Liu Bocheng formed a reinforcement army to advance westward to rescue. Liu Bocheng led his troops to station in Zhenyuan, Gansu, and opened many shelter stations to find soldiers from the West Route Army who were breaking out.
Liu Bocheng
Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi, starting from March 1937, the two went out of Qilian and crossed the Gobi Desert, walking more than 2,000 miles.
They have no supplies, and they have to beware of the enemy's searches at all times, so they can only turn into beggars and barely maintain their lives. After more than 120 days of wind and dining, he arrived at the command of the Western Army in July.
The previous article of the interview with Commander Liu Bocheng was Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi who had experienced many difficulties and dangers.
Although Liu Bocheng had never met Xiao Yongyin, he had heard of his talents for a long time, and after that, he took him under his command.
So why does Liu Bocheng admire Xiao Yongyin so much?
13-year-old brave general
In June 1917, Xiao Yongyin was born in Huang'an, Hubei. His childhood was very miserable. His mother died when he was 5 years old and his father was killed when he was 13 years old. He lost his close relatives, Xiao Yongyin, and joined the Red Army by chance at the age of 13.
Xiao Yongyin man, a small ghost, soon grew up in the Red Army, working all the way from a serviceman to a commander of the department. In 1935, the Fourth Red Army abandoned the Sichuan-Shaanxi base area and moved to northwest Sichuan.
Xiao Yongyin
. The Kuomintang reactionaries naturally would not confirm this. The Sichuan Army always insisted on the Red Fourth Front Army, and for this reason, a unit was needed to cover the evacuation. The Red 33rd Regiment took on this mission and relied on the terrain of Jiangyou Dagang Mountain, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack, to block the enemy.
Due to the huge gap in number of people and equipment, although the Red 33rd Regiment successfully blocked the enemy for one week, the losses were very serious. The Kuomintang Sichuan Army also understood that the Red 33rd Regiment was at the end of its strength, so it increased the frequency of attack.
Xiao Yongyin (first from left)
Seeing that the troops were sacrificed one after another, Zhang Changhou, the commander of the Red 33rd Regiment, was extremely anxious. He could not watch anymore. He wanted to charge himself!
But at this moment, a somewhat immature voice suddenly sounded in his ears:
"Captain, give me a few brothers, I'll go! I'll defeat the enemy for you!"
Zhang Changhou looked back and saw that Xiao Yongyin, who was only 18 years old, was looking at himself with an excited face.
Zhang Changhou admires this clever child very much, but he only plays trumpets and has never commanded a battle. How could he hand over the troops to him like this?
But as the battle situation became more and more tense, coupled with Xiao Yongyin's repeated requests for battle, Zhang Changhou had to accompany him to take a risk.
Zhang Changhou gritted his teeth and waved his hand:
"I'll give you two companies and defeat the enemy!"
Xiao Yongyin immediately straightened his back and excitedly led the soldiers of the two companies to jump out of the trenches and launched a counterattack towards the enemy.
The enemy looked at the imposing Red Army soldiers and thought it was the Red Army's reinforcements that launched a counterattack, and they were in chaos.
Xiao Yongyin took the lead and chased the fleeing enemy all the way, and was about to catch a commander of the Sichuan Army. But with a gunshot, Xiao Yongyin stopped and fell down staggeringly.
Xiao Yongyin
Watching the battle, Zhang Changhou knew that Xiao Yongyin was injured. While commanding the troops to repel the enemy, he quickly sent someone to take Xiao Yongyin back. The young Xiao Yongyin closed his eyes tightly and fainted on the stretcher. Only the faint ups and downs in his chest proved that he was still alive.
Even though Zhang Changhou was a tough guy, his eyes turned red at this time and he muttered: "This little guy is so desperate!"
Although he complained, Zhang Changhou was shocked by Xiao Yongyin's command ability. You must know that this was his first time to set foot on the battlefield.
Crossing the grass
0 Xiao Yongyin was in a coma for three days and three nights, and only came back when changing the dressing on the fourth day, saving his life. But at this time the troops were about to climb snow-capped mountains and cross the grassland. In order to prevent the wounded from worsening, they must stay at the homes of fellow villagers in Maozhou to recuperate.
As a wounded person, Xiao Yongyin will naturally be transferred. Seeing Xiao Yongyin passing by, Zhang Changhou couldn't help but stop him. He admired this young boy very much and was reluctant to let him stay here.
commander of the retreating Red Fourth Army commander Xu Shiyou came over and saw that Zhang Changhou had been slowing down, so he came over to inquire about the situation. After learning that Zhang Changhou was reluctant to leave Xiao Yongyin, Xu Shiyou smiled heartily, patted his shoulder and said, "Then carry it up!"
Xiao Yongyin was carried by the Red Army soldiers all the way across the grassland, climbed over the snowy mountain of , and survived successfully.
Xu Shiyou
Therefore, Zhang Changhou and Xu Shiyou also became Xiao Yongyin's life-saving benefactors. Later, after Xiao Yongyin became Xu Shiyou's deputy, Xu Shiyou was also shocked when talking about this matter.
1 On March 13, 1937, the Western Route Army held its last meeting in Hongshiwo and made the decision to break the troops into pieces and strive to break through.
After the meeting, the commander-in-chief Xu Xiangqian said to Li Xiannian, the leader of the left detachment:
"Comrade Xiannian, give me your guard platoon leader."
Li Xiannian also understood that his guard platoon leader Xiao Yongyin was a capable general, so he asked him to take on the work of protecting Xu Xiangqian and the group broke through to northern Shaanxi.
Xu Xiangqian
Xu Xiangqian even entrusted an important letter to the Party Central Committee to Xiao Yongyin before breaking through alone, which is enough to prove Xu Xiangqian's recognition of Xiao Yongyin.
Xiao Yongyin hid the letter in a felt hat. In order to avoid the enemy's search, the two changed into ordinary people's clothes. They lie down every day and go out at night, and are very careful whenever they move forward, for fear of being recognized by the reactionaries.
But since the two of them did not carry supplies, they had no choice but to beg along the way, and they were able to fill their stomachs with the help of kind-hearted people. Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi's clothes were gradually tattered, and their escape was so dirty that they looked like beggars.
Chen Mingyi
When the two escaped to an abandoned mine cave called "Lime Kiln", they met Wu Jianchu from the General Political Department of the West Route Army.
While Wu Jianchu hid them in the mine, he also found a way to contact Yan'an . But in the face of the enemy's strict search, Wu Jianchu could not find any opportunity, and he delayed it for a full 18 days.
Xiao Yongyin and Chen Mingyi were eager to hand over the letter to the central government, so they ventured again and decided to walk east through the deserted desert.

The scorching sun bakes the desert, making the two of them feel like walking on a hot stove, panting with breath every step.
What’s more serious is that it’s hard for both of them to fill their stomachs, and it’s even more impossible for them to carry a kettle with them.
Xiao Yongyin's mouth and tongue are dry, and his body seems to be about to evaporate. Even drinking urine to quench his thirst has become a luxury.
Fortunately, this desert is not very big. Before dark, the two finally walked out of the desert and found a source of water, and then they were able to escape.
Then the two of them passed through Yongchang , Liangzhou, Wuwei and other places, suffering from the scorching heat all the way, with lice sucking blood everywhere on their heads and bodies.
It was not until mid-July that the two staggering two people were able to arrive at Liu Bocheng's headquarters for the West.
The two finally let go of their fears all the way and completed the task successfully.
Xiao Yongyin, feeling relieved, hurriedly took off his felt hat and carefully took out the letter hidden in it.
After experiencing life and death along the way, both of himself and Chen Mingyi fell into a dilemma of being unconcealed, but the letter was still kept intact by them.
Liu Bocheng and the comrades from the command of the Western Aiding West hurriedly stepped forward to support the two people who were not strong enough to speak, and arranged for someone to take them to wash and eat first.
Liu Bocheng has long heard of Xiao Yongyin, who is not very old but brave in combat, and is moved by his revolutionary spirit of being able to persist in completing the task in such a difficult situation.
couldn't help but feel loving talent. After asking Xiao Yongyin for his opinion, he finally took him under his command. At this point, Xiao Yongyin began to follow Liu Bocheng to fight everywhere.
Liu Bocheng's favorite general
Xiao Yongyin admitted in an interview in his later years:
"I have followed two marshals in my life. Shuai Xu taught me bravery, and Shuai Liu taught me tactics."
Liu Bocheng is in his twenties older than Xiao Yongyin. For Xiao Yongyin, Shuai Liu is a military teacher like a kind father.
1937, Xiao Yongyin was appointed as the battalion commander of the 1st Battalion of the 14th Regiment of the 385th Brigade of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army by Liu Bocheng. He quickly showed outstanding command talent.
Faced with the repeated sweeps of the Japanese army again and again, Xiao Yongyin decided to take the initiative to attack and punish the Japanese army. He selected the bravest soldiers under his command to form an assault team, and the large army served as a support cover assault team.
Japanese army's "sweeping"
led by Xiao Yongyin. This 12-man commando quietly touched Dayangzhuang where the Japanese army was stationed, but unexpectedly discovered that the Japanese army had deployed an mountain cannon here. Xiao Yongyin immediately changed the combat plan and ordered the mountain cannon to be taken back.
The commandos immediately launched an attack on the sleeping Japanese army. After hearing the gunshots, the large army also launched an attack on the side. For a moment, the Eighth Route Army shouted on all sides.
The Japanese army was stunned by the sudden attack and had no idea which direction to fight back in a hurry, with heavy casualties.
While the Japanese army was unprepared, Xiao Yongyin and his soldiers transferred the mountain cannon to the battalion headquarters, and then gradually moved upward from the battalion headquarters. Finally, they were dragged to Taihang Mountain by the division headquarters.
This is also the first mountain cannon of the Eighth Route Army troops, and it was "snatched" back from the enemy, and its significance is naturally extraordinary.
Deputy Commander Xu Xiangqian happily wrote on the cannon, "The Eighth Route Army seized the Japanese mountain cannon in the battle of Dayangzhuang", and asked someone to take photos as a souvenir. The division commander Liu Bocheng also praised with a smile: "This is an artistic battle!"
1942, due to the leak of radio signals, the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army was about to fall into an encirclement composed of tens of thousands of Japanese troops.
Xiao Yongyin, who was the deputy commander of the 13th Regiment at the time, did not wait rigidly for the division headquarters to order it and decisively ordered the 13th Regiment to go to rescue.
At this time, the Japanese army's encirclement had not been completely closed, so Xiao Yongyin's 13th Regiment successfully rescued the headquarters, and important leaders such as Luo Ruiqing were able to break through safely.
After Xiao Yongyin returned to the division headquarters, Liu Bocheng, who learned the news, did not blame him for taking action without authorization, but laughed so hard that he couldn't stop and said "Okay". Deng Xiaoping also patted Xiao Yongyin on the shoulder and praised him repeatedly.
During the War of Liberation, Xiao Yongyin's combat talent became more and more vivid, making Liu and Deng appreciate him very much.
In March 1949, Chiang Kai-shek adjusted the combat plan, changing from a comprehensive attack on the liberated areas to a key attack on the liberated areas in northern Shaanxi and Shandong.
Chiang Kai-shek

Kuomintang reactionaries were defeated one after another and wanted to blow up the Yellow River dam to flood Shandong and northern Shaanxi.
Therefore, under the instructions of the Central Military Commission, Liu and Deng's army immediately advanced towards Dabie Mountains . When the troops arrived at Ruhe , they encountered heavy troops from the Kuomintang intercepted them.
This battle, Chiang Kai-shek personally flew to Kaifeng to command, hoping to completely annihilate Liu and Deng's army in Ruhe.
At the same time, the Kuomintang's large troops were about to catch up, and Liu Bocheng immediately judged "Our army must complete part of the crossing of the river within a few hours, otherwise the entire army will be wiped out."
He commanded the troops to divide into three groups, Li Desheng on the left blocked the enemy, Xiao Yongyin on the right fights against the enemy in Ruhe, and the headquarters is responsible for building a floating bridge for forced crossing.
Xiao Yongyin immediately led the 18th Brigade to engage in a bloody battle with the national army in the direction of Ruhe, but as he fought, he suddenly heard the sound of gunfire from the side.
, meticulous, immediately took out the map to study it, suddenly shuddered, and shouted to his subordinates:
"Not good! Go and save the leader!"
forced the Ru River
Xiao Yongyin did not hesitate at all, and immediately led the 47th regiment to a rapid rescue. Sure enough, the enemy had attacked less than two kilometers away from Liu Deng's command! When Liu Bocheng saw Xiao Yongyin arrive, he immediately shouted to him:
"Xiao Yongyin! Charge!"
Xiao Yongyin then launched an attack on the enemy, cooperated with the command troops to completely annihilate the enemy, and successfully saved the lives of leaders such as Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping.
Xiao Yongyin's 18th Brigade took the lead and protected Liu and Deng to the north bank of Ruhe.
Deng Xiaoping
And the enemy's Luo Guangwen Corps had already chased after him, and the troops immediately faced an unprecedented critical moment. Liu Bocheng held a wooden stick and stared at Xiao Yongyin with his only remaining eye, and said seriously:
"Xiao Yongyin! The brave one wins when they meet on a narrow road, do you understand?"
Xiao Yongyin was shocked and instantly understood that as soon as he said this, the situation was at its most dangerous moment. Under Xiao Yongyin's command, the soldiers of the 18th Brigade all installed bayonets, hung grenades and on them and bravely and fearlessly killed the enemy.
Under the heavy siege of the enemy, the 18th Brigade tore open a hole of more than 10 miles. Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping and other members of the headquarters were able to break through through this bloody road.
Under Xiao Yongyin's struggle, the army of 120,000 Liu and Deng successfully broke through the siege and advanced into the Dabie Mountains smoothly.
Then Xiao Yongyin followed Liu Bocheng all the way, participated in every battle commanded by Liu Bocheng during the Liberation War, and made outstanding achievements.
After the founding of New China, Xiao Yongyin, as the deputy commander and chief of staff of the 12th Army, participated in the Battle of Resisting U.S. Aggression and Aiding Korea as the second batch of troops. In the Shangganling Battle , the 12th Army joined the battlefield on November 1, 1952 and successfully defended Shangganling with the 15th Army.
955, Xiao Yongyin was awarded the rank of founding major general for his outstanding military achievements, and then served as the commander of the armored soldiers of the Nanjing Military Region. and the commander of Nanjing Military Region is Xu Shiyou who once saved his life in Long March .
The deep friendship between Liu Bocheng and Xiao Yongyin
One late in 1970, Xiao Yongyin, then chief of staff of the Nanjing Military Region, suddenly received a call from Xu Shiyou, asking him to welcome Liu Bocheng. Xiao Yongyin immediately became excited. He and Shuai Liu had been separated for many years and finally had the opportunity to meet again today.
After receiving Liu Bocheng, Liu Shuai was in a low mood at this time and said slowly: "I am old and I am here to cause trouble for you."
Xiao Yongyin also understood Liu Shuai's loneliness at this time and hurriedly said:
"Liu Shuai, why do you say this? How did you treat me before, and how do you treat me now, so I feel comfortable. You are so polite now, it's not easy for me!"
Liu Bocheng saw that the friendship between the two was not affected and comforted him a lot, and he advised Xiao Yongyin earnestly that after becoming the chief of staff, always remember to put yourself in the shadow place.
Seeing that Xiao Yongyin was a little confused, he explained again:
"I served as the chief of the general manager for three times, and I was dismissed from office after defeat. Commanding Jiangxi Battle , I have never used my name..."
Xiao Yongyin suddenly realized and kept Liu Shuai's words in his heart, and rarely showed up in public since then.
Liu Bocheng moved into No. 5, Zhongshan Mausoleum, Nanjing. He is usually depressed and rarely talks to others.Xu Shiyou saw that the old coach was in a low mood, so he ordered Xiao Yongyin to visit him more.
As expected, as soon as Xiao Yongyin came, Liu Bocheng showed a high interest in chatting. During the period of living in Nanjing, Xiao Yongyin and Xu Shiyou would come to accompany Liu Bocheng when they were free, which gave Liu Shuai a great comfort.
htmlIn the late 1980s, Liu Shuai's health became worse and worse, and he basically spent his time in the hospital bed. When Xiao Yongyin came to visit Liu Bocheng for the last time, Liu Shuai was so weak that he couldn't speak, so he could only lie on the hospital bed and use infusion to supplement nutrition.
In his later years, Liu Bocheng
Xiao Yongyin's tears came out in an instant. He came to Liu Bocheng gently, took Liu Shuai's hand and choked: "Teacher, it's me, Xiao Yongyin!"
Liu Shuai's breathing became rapid after hearing this. He opened his mouth, but his body was so weak that he could not speak.
Only a rumbling sound like water boiling in Liu Shuai's throat, and then he gave up helplessly and could only blink to indicate that he knew.
Liu Shuai in his later years
Xiao Yongyin immediately burst into tears when he saw this scene.
He could only hold Liu Shuai's hands tightly to express his feelings for him, and he left for half an hour. And when Xiao Yongyin went out, a nurse called him and told him a secret.
When Marshal Liu Bocheng was still able to speak, one night she heard Liu Shuai suddenly shouting: "Xiao Yongyin! Charge!", but she didn't know what it meant. Xiao Yongyin knelt at the door of the ward, crying in silence until he cried until he had no strength to leave the wall.
Of course he understood why Liu Shuai shouted this sentence. He was thinking back to the glorious years of fighting side by side with him in his sleep!
Deng Xiaoping condolences to Liu Bocheng's family
1986, Marshal Liu Bocheng died of illness in Beijing. Deng Xiaoping, as his old comrade-in-arms, personally presided over the funeral for him.
After Deng Xiaoping finished reading the funeral committee list, he found that Xiao Yongyin's name was not included, and he immediately got furious. The staff responsible for organizing the funeral had not seen Mr. Deng so angry for many years.
Liu Bocheng's wife was also very angry when she learned about this. They all knew how much Liu Bocheng valued Xiao Yongyin during his lifetime. How could the funeral committee be missing him?
So she hurriedly called Xiao Yongyin and explained to him the heavy news about Liu Shuai's death.
Deng Xiaoping and Liu Bocheng
Xiao Yongyin rushed over that day, and his eyes were already swollen when he came.
He walked straight to Liu Bocheng's portrait, bowed three times to the body, and then cried bitterly: "Old coach! I, Xiao Yongyin, are late, I didn't have time to see you off..."
How much he hoped that the old coach could still hold his hand and teach him the truth kindly, but unfortunately there was no such opportunity again. On April 29, 2002, Xiao Yongyin died of illness in Nanjing at the age of 85.
The successive deaths of two fathers of the Republic came to an end to this half-century friendship.
But history and the people will never forget their great revolutionary friendship, and will not forget their outstanding contributions to the New China!
What do you think about the deep friendship between Liu Bocheng and Xiao Yongyin? Welcome to leave your opinion in the comment section.
