Out of admiration for the old leader, Zhang Tingfa specially hung the photo of Deng Xiaoping and the portrait of Chairman Mao on the front wall of the living room. Facing two mentors every day, Zhang Tingfa couldn't help but feel a warm current.
When talking about his past work, Zhang Tingfa would always say from the heart: "I can achieve the current results, which is inseparable from the teachings of Chairman Mao and Comrade Deng Xiaoping!"
A detailed battle report asked Zhang Tingfa to come to Chief Liu and Deng
July 7, 1937, Japanese imperialism started a full-scale war of aggression against China based on the creation of the Lugou Bridge Incident. This was the beginning of China's national war of resistance.
In order to resist foreign enemies, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party cooperated again. According to the agreement reached between the two parties, the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China issued an order on August 25 to adapt the main force of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army into the Eighth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army, which is under the jurisdiction of the 115th Division, the 120th Division and the 129th Division.
original Red Fourth Front Army and Shaanxi Northern Red Army 29, Red Thirty Army and other departments were reorganized into the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army. The division commander was Liu Bocheng and the deputy division commander was Xu Xiangqian. The 91st and 92nd Divisions of the 31st Red Army where Zhang Tingfa was located were respectively reorganized into the 771st and 772nd Regiments of the 386th Brigade.

The brigade commander of the 386th Brigade is Chen Geng and Deputy Brigade Commander Chen Zaidao, and Zhang Tingfa serves as the staff officer of the brigade headquarters. After the reorganization of the
troops, the 129th Division held a oath-taking meeting and a military parade. On September 6, Liu Bocheng and Zhang Hao, director of the Division of the State Administration of Political Science and Technology, arrived at the venue on time. Zhang Tingfa and more than 9,000 people from the entire division listened to Liu Bocheng's speech majestic in the heavy rain: Comrades, in the national anti-Japanese situation, national survival and national crisis, we Chinese Communists need to hold high the banner of anti-Japanese war and fight the invaders the most heroic struggle!
Finally, Liu Bocheng led the entire division to take the oath in the heavy rain. The officers and fighters at the meeting were ready to fight and determined to kill the enemy to death. In the years that followed, Zhang Tingfa fought everywhere with the troops, honing his military literacy and overall view in actual combat.
In the spring of 1940, Zhang Tingfa was transferred to the position of the 385th Brigade Command as the head of the Operations Section. In August, under the command of General Peng and others, more than 100 regiments were mobilized to launch an attack on the important transportation lines and strongholds occupied by the Japanese army. This battle is also called the Hundred Regiments Battle .
In this battle, Zhang Tingfa also participated and followed the 385th Brigade to fight. During the war, the Brigade Department issued notices, orders and summary of each team, most of which were drafted by Zhang Ting. For this reason, he had a clear understanding of the development of the battlefield situation.

After reading the documents reported by the 385th Brigade, the leaders of the 129th Division and the headquarters attached great importance to it, so they appointed someone to inspect Zhang Tingfa.
One time, the 129th Division held a staff work meeting. The brigade chief Zeng Shaoshan was unable to go because of something. For this reason, the brigade commander Chen Xilian asked Zhang Tingfa to attend the meeting. Among the staff members attending the meeting at that time, Zhang Tingfa was undoubtedly the most eye-catching because he was the youngest.
During the meeting, Wei Lei, the chief staff member of the division, asked Zhang Tingfa, "Who wrote the battle report of your brigade headquarters?" Zhang Tingfa replied after hearing this, "I wrote it." The other party left without saying anything. Zhang Tingfa didn't take this inquiry seriously, thinking it was a patrol work by his superiors.
However, what Zhang Tingfa did not expect was that it was this inquiry that changed his own destiny.Shortly after Zhang Tingfa returned to the brigade department after attending the meeting, he received an order from the division headquarters: to transfer Comrade Zhang Tingfa to the division headquarters as the combat section chief!

Can work with Chief Liu Deng, which is something that many people hope, but Zhang Tingfa is a little confused about how he attracted the attention of Chief Liu Deng? After Zhang Tingfa followed the order, he came to the division headquarters and learned through Wei Lei's eloquence that his detailed operation report was highly praised by Chief Liu Deng, who believed that he was suitable for work in the division headquarters, so he had this transfer order.
After Zhang Tingfa took office, he came to his office. The Division Command is located in an ancient temple in Chi'an Village. It is not only the combat room of the Division Command, but also the office of Zhang Tingfa and the Operations Section. The walls are full of combat maps. Liu Bocheng, division political commissar Deng Xiaoping and chief of staff Li Da came to the war room every day to review documents.
Zhang Tingfa met Deng Xiaoping on the first day of his tenure. Just when he didn't know how to speak, Deng Xiaoping said to him: "You are the newly transferred Comrade Zhang Tingfa. If you come to work in the combat department, we will have more opportunities to contact in the future."
Zhang Tingfa nodded after hearing this and said, "Chief, please give me some advice in the future." Since then, during the position of the command of the combat section chief, Zhang Tingfa had many opportunities to approach Deng Xiaoping and attended the conference he chaired many times. Looking back on this past, Zhang Tingfa once said:
After a long period of contact, I felt that he was approachable, full of knowledge, and spoke concisely, one sentence was one sentence.

Similarly, while getting along with Zhang Tingfa, Deng Xiaoping found that Zhang Tingfa is not only resourceful, but also good at fighting.
In the summer of 1942, the Japanese invaders dispatched a large number of troops to carry out a "big sweep" of the Taihang Anti-Japanese Base Area, and also commanded the troops to take the opportunity to have friction with the Eighth Route Army troops. Under such circumstances, Deng Xiaoping received an order from the Eighth Route Army headquarters to go to Taiyue area to lead the battle, while Liu Bocheng and others stayed in the Taihang base to organize military and civilians to carry out anti-"sweeping".
When Deng Xiaoping left home, he specifically reminded Zhang Tingfa: "The situation in front of him is complicated, so be vigilant and protect the safety of Commander Liu." Deng Xiaoping's advice made Zhang Tingfa realize the heavy responsibility he shouldered. For this reason, he said: "We will definitely protect the safety of Commander Liu, please rest assured!"
After Deng Xiaoping left, Zhang Tingfa sat in the war room all day to analyze the trends of the Japanese army. In June 1942, Zhang Tingfa received a report on the trends of the Japanese army. After his careful analysis, he felt that the movements of the Japanese army were most likely to be rushing to the location of the 129th Division. For this reason, Zhang Tingfa immediately reported the discovery to Chief of Staff Li Da.

After Li Da and Liu Bocheng discussed, it was confirmed that Zhang Tingfa's judgment was correct, and the position of the division headquarters had been exposed, so the transfer should be organized immediately. Considering that the division headquarters and border government had a large number of personnel, they were transferred in two batches, and Zhang Tingfa also assumed the security of the division chief and the head of the headquarters. During the transfer,
encountered the Japanese army, and Zhang Tingfa led his troops to block the attack. Because the enemy deployed the local terrain and fought in the Eighth Route Army area, he did not dare to pursue it rashly, but instead bit the rear of the team. Under such circumstances, Zhang Tingfa realized that if this continues, the enemy is very likely to summon other troops to surround us.
Zhang Tingfa proposed to Liu Bocheng: the large army will go first, guard force will stay to block the enemy, and take the enemy to the opposite direction! Liu Bocheng agreed with his idea and reminded: "You are in danger this time, don't fight, I'll wait for you to return safely."
In this way, Zhang Tingfa led his troops to play hide-and-seek with the enemy and killed many enemies. After Zhang Tingfa expected that the main force would arrive at a safe position, he began to lead his troops to engage in a rotating battle. After many difficulties, he finally got rid of the enemy and joined the large army.After learning that Zhang Tingfa had returned, Liu Bocheng held his hand tightly and said, "You are back safely, it's great! I have been worried about your situation these days."

Zhang Tingfa said, "Before leaving, Political Commissar Deng specifically told me to protect the safety of the leader, and this is also my duty."

Deng Xiaoping's criticism and care for Zhang Tingfa
Zhang Tingfa learned a lot from the two leaders Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping. For this reason, Deng Xiaoping intended to let him go out and hone his troops in actual combat, and transform what he learned into his own.
In 1943, 25-year-old Zhang Tingfa was appointed as the chief of staff of the Taihang Military Region , and soon afterwards he was appointed as the commander of the Taihang Seventh Division, and began to embark on the road of a general. During the actual command process, Zhang Tingfa flexibly used the tactics learned from Chief Liu and Deng, and learned from them, leading his troops to win many victories.
Zhang Tingfa's performance was also seen by Chief Liu Deng: "Comrade Zhang Tingfa's progress is visible to the naked eye, and I will put him in a burden when I have the opportunity."
On August 15, 1945, the Japanese government announced its surrender and signed the surrender letter on September 2. At this point, the Chinese people's arduous war of resistance finally ended. However, just as the people of the whole country were not happy for a few days, Chiang Kai-shek resolutely launched the civil war and began a large-scale attack on the liberated areas.

After the liberation operation began, Chief Liu Deng transferred Zhang Tingfa to the Sixth Column as Chief of Staff to assist Comrade Wang Jinshan in command of the operation.
At the end of September 1946, Liu and Deng's army launched a series of offensives and achieved many results. However, the battle for many consecutive days made the troops very tired. After discussing this, Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping decided to rest and fight after regaining their combat effectiveness.
At that time, the Sixth Column followed the headquarters to operate. Zhang Tingfa, as the chief of staff, had a lot of work to be responsible for. On the one hand, he needed to ensure the safety of Chief Liu and Deng, and on the other hand, he had to ensure the solution to the supply problems of the troops. For this reason, he was very busy every day.
During the resumption and transfer, the troops were difficult to walk on the road due to rain, and trucks transporting materials were deeply trapped in the quagmire and could not move forward. There was no choice but to borrow a few cars from the people's homes to help with transportation. After arriving at the destination, Deng Xiaoping considered that the people's burden was heavy, so he held a meeting to reduce the burden on the people and reduce the requisition of the people's cars.
However, a few days later, Deng Xiaoping saw that there were still many people's cars, so he called Zhang Tingfa to ask seriously: "Why not execute the order you said?"

In fact, when Deng Xiaoping held a meeting, Zhang Tingfa did not participate because of work, and no one notified him afterwards. For this reason, when he heard Deng Xiaoping's words, he felt a little dissatisfied. The young and energetic Zhang Tingfa became more and more angry when he was having a meal, so he overturned the table.
Deng Xiaoping knew about his actions. For this reason, Zhang Tingfa was called and said: "What, can you Zhang Tingfa criticize? Just make an attitude when you criticize it? Go back and reflect on it yourself."
In the next few days, Deng Xiaoping did not look for Zhang Tingfa, just to let him realize his mistakes. After calming down, Zhang Tingfa realized his mistake and took the initiative to ask Deng Xiaoping to admit his mistake. Seeing that he had a good attitude towards admitting his mistake, Deng Xiaoping said, "
We should do things, and we should have public opinion , and we cannot be single." This place, the Kuomintang came and we also came. The people are under heavy burden and cannot bear the hardships. We must try our best to protect the interests of the people and reduce the people's economic and labor burden. The support of the people is an important condition for us to win battles.To destroy discipline and get out of the masses is to dig your own grave!

Deng Xiaoping's words had a great impact on Zhang Tingfa. In the years that followed, Zhang Tingfa remembered Deng Xiaoping's words, and the belief in serving the people became General Zhang Tingfa's life creed.
After Deng Xiaoping returned, he appointed Zhang Tingfa as the political commissar of the Air Force
In early January 1975, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China announced that: Deng Xiaoping served as Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission and Chief of General Staff. At the first session of the Fourth National People's Congress held in mid-January, Deng Xiaoping was appointed as the first vice premier of the State Council.
With the support of Chairman Mao, Deng Xiaoping began to preside over the daily work of the Party Central Committee and the State Council instead of the seriously ill Premier Zhou, and carried out drastic rectification.
In July 1975, Deng Xiaoping and Ye Jianying presided over the enlarged meeting of the Military Commission to discuss military rectification matters. After the meeting was held, Deng Xiaoping appointed Zhang Tingfa as the political commissar of the Air Force and the first secretary of the Party Committee.

After receiving this appointment, Zhang Tingfa naturally obeyed the organization's arrangements unconditionally, but he also had a trace of doubt in his heart: How should this work be carried out? What should you pay attention to?
Just as Zhang Tingfa was about to ask Deng Xiaoping for advice, he received a notice from Deng Xiaoping that he wanted to talk to him. After meeting Deng Xiaoping, Zhang Tingfa expressed his inner thoughts, but Deng Xiaoping did not answer immediately. Instead, he asked, "How do you plan to carry out work after taking office?"
Zhang Tingfa was not unprepared after hearing this, but said what he thought: "We are going to start with rectification, comprehensively rectify the work of the Air Force, change the appearance, and create a new situation."
Deng Xiaoping nodded after hearing this and said, "Your idea is very good, just do what you have to do. If the troops need to be rectified, it is better to rectify them in a comprehensive manner. But you need to pay attention to protecting the party's leadership over the Air Force..."

Zhang Tingfa nodded solemnly after hearing this, and then Deng Xiaoping said, "You will go to see Comrade Ye Jianying later to see what he has to say."
After coming to Marshal Ye Jianying's office, Ye Jianying said straight to the point: "Comrade Zhang Tingfa, the work of the Air Force will be handed over to you. However, the Central Military Commission has two requirements for you. The first is to maintain the leadership of the Party over the Air Force; the second is to require the troops to rectify, and these two must always be grasped." After hearing this, Zhang Tingfa replied, "Mr. Ye, I promise to complete the task!"
After taking office, Zhang Tingfa carried out his work in full accordance with the instructions of the Central Military Commission and achieved considerable results. Soon after, Zhang Tingfa will report on the rectification of the Air Force and submit it to Deng Xiaoping for review. Deng Xiaoping quickly issued a message "very good", and Luo Ruiqing, Secretary-General of the Central Military Commission, wrote a comment of more than 300 words: I fully support Vice Chairman Deng's view!
Then, according to Deng Xiaoping's proposal, Military Commission convened a meeting of leaders of various units stationed in Beijing and designated Comrade Zhang Tingfa to speak at the meeting. The Air Force's approach was well received by the participants.

In the years that followed, Zhang Tingfa always adhered to the leadership of the Party Central Committee, actively implemented the principles and policies of the Party Central Committee, and made great contributions to the vigorous development of the Air Force!
In 1983, while arranging several old leaders among the Standing Committee of the Air Force Party Committee to withdraw from the leadership team of the Air Force Party Committee, Zhang Tingfa was also considering the issue of his withdrawal from the leadership team of the Air Force Party Committee.
Zhang Tingfa believes that he is an old Communist Party member and should have the awareness to actively apply to withdraw from the Air Force leadership position. After considering it clearly, Zhang Tingfa made a formal report to the Party Central Committee:
