In the 15th year of Jian'an (210 years), it belonged to Poyang County, and was the county government. The county seat was moved to the present day, Guxiandu Town. In the eighth year of Chiwu in the Three Kingdoms (245 years), the county was still governed by Poyang Town. In March of the sixth year of Xianning in Jin Dynasty (280 years), the county was moved to Shimenjie Town. In the second year of Zhongxing in the Southern Dynasties (502), the county was governed by Poyang Town. In 1932, it belonged to the fourth administrative region of Jiangxi Province. In 1935, it belonged to the fifth administrative district. In 1952, it belonged to Shangrao Prefecture. In 1957, it was renamed Boyang County. In 1971, it belonged to the Shangrao Prefecture. In 2000, the land was removed and merged into the city, and Poyang County came under the jurisdiction of Shangrao City. On December 17, 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Boyang County restored its name to Poyang County.
