Chen Yonggui was born in Shishan Village, Leping Town, Xiyang County, Shanxi in 1914.
Generations of poor peasants in the Chen family lived by selling children and women and wives. At the age of 6, his father could not bear the pressure of life and hanged himself to death. After Chen Yonggui was adopted by an old man from Dazhai Village , he started an extraordinary life.
Dazhai Village is a small mountain village in Xiyang County, Shanxi Province. Dazhai has very bad natural conditions, and it is a poor mountain village. In 1952, Chen Yonggui served as the secretary of Dazhai Village and began the path of leading the whole village to transform the natural environment. Under the leadership of Chen Yonggui and others, the Dazhai people are determined to organize to change the backwardness of the mountain village.
Beginning in 53 years, the management of mountains and rivers has taken ten years of effort on the "seven ditch, eight beams and one slope" to build a high-yield, stable-yielding sponge field with a yield of 1,000 jin per mu. However, in 1963, Dazhai suffered a devastating flood, with mountain flow, ground washout, house collapse, and kiln collapse. The life of the people was very difficult. Ten years of painstaking efforts were wasted. Comrade Chen Yonggui led the whole village to develop self-reliance and hard work, but the people of Dazhai still insisted on "three nos and three nos." One does not need state relief funds, two does not require state relief food, and three does not require state relief supplies. It is also necessary to ensure that the rations of members, the inventory of food, and the state's purchase of grains will not decrease. The people of Dazhai worked hard and relied on themselves. With one hand, two shoulders, a sickle, and two baskets, they worked day and night to plant more than 1,000 acres of trees on a land of 1.88 square kilometers and renovate good fields. More than 800 acres, 12 li of Panshan highway, 6 reservoirs, more than 10,000 cubic meters of water, 28 li of Panshan ditches, more than 30,000 meters of underground water pipes, 400 acres of dry land irrigation area, realized agricultural mechanization, water conservancy, and More than 200,000 catties of surplus grain are handed over to the country every year.
Chairman Mao fully affirmed and praised Dazhai Village,And in 1964, the call of " to learn from Dazhai " was issued, so that "Dazhai" became a banner of national agriculture. "People's Daily" reported on Chen Yonggui's deeds, and there was a wave of learning from the cold across the country. Since then, he has been promoted all the way, and finally to the vice premier of the State Council.
After the reform and opening up, Dazhai Village was questioned. Chen Yonggui felt extremely uncomfortable and decided to leave his job at the State Council. But soon, cancer was detected. He chose to give up treatment and died on March 26, 1986 at the age of 72.
Before his death, Chen Yonggui said: "I have been able to connect with Chairman Mao in my entire life, and it is a worthwhile life. People are doomed to die, and I did not shame Chairman Mao.
