Hebei Medical University (predecessor) three in and three out of Baoding city

When I searched the Internet for the traces of Cao Kun founded in Baoding during the period of the Republic of China in the past two years, I was delighted to see an old photo from an old family album uploaded by a particularly sentimental netizen. It was a large wooden bridge over a one-mu spring river in Baoding in the twelfth lunar month of the Republic of China. Under the bridge is the frozen river water with white light and blue sky. (West of the park) vast scenery. What is striking is that the bridge is full of people in long robes, jackets and leather hats. They are all looking eastward, looking at the tall city walls and the frozen river. The inscription under the photo says: "Respectfully send Mr. Zhang Bojun to the United States to commemorate his stay in the United States" by the staff and students of the Faculty of Medicine of Hebei University. It felt that Mr. Zhang Bojun had already boarded the boat and sailed eastward along Yimu Quanhe to go abroad in Tianjin. Everyone waved goodbye to him on the bridge. This photo is designed to be very emotional, not taken on the campus of Hebei University, but taken as a send-off on the bridge.

This should be the earliest old photo with the words "Hebei University".

Recently, a 1927 diploma of Hebei University Medical Department (Baoding) was discovered. This is also the present The only diploma of Hebei University (Baoding) found in the Republic of China.

The netizen who posted the photos on the river issued a question, saying that I don’t know when the ancestors left the photos, and I don’t know who this Mr. Zhang Bojun is. What's the whereabouts, I don't know why this Hebei University was in Baoding at that time, and what is the relationship with Hebei University, which is currently east of Baoding?

This is also the question of many people.

Now the answer is clear. In 1921, Cao Kun was ordered to establish Hebei University at the former Zhili Higher School (Beiyang University Preparatory Course) in the southwest of Baoding City and the Zhili Agricultural College to the west. Li Normal University, Zhili Agricultural College, and Zhili Law and Politics College were integrated and upgraded to a comprehensive university at the undergraduate level.Hebei University is divided into agriculture, medicine, law, liberal arts (later divided into Chinese and English) and preparatory courses. The university lasted for ten years and was dissolved in 1931. Chinese was merged into Beiping Normal University, English was merged into Nankai , law department was merged into Tianjin Law and Business College, while agriculture and medicine were independently established Hebei Provincial College of Agriculture and Hebei Provincial Medical College . The School of Agriculture opens in the north, and the Medical School opens in the south. There are two gates in one drawing, but the name of the colonel on the school plaque is slightly different. One is for agriculture and the other is for medicine. The rest of the words are the same. The College of Agriculture later developed into Hebei Agricultural University . I went to Beijing Xiannongtan for a short time to run a school, and then I have been in Baoding. I just want to talk about the history of the medical school in and out of Baoding, which is quite interesting.

The font of the medical school is unclear. It must be a drawing.

1938 Hebei Medical College (Baoding) Graduation Certificate

It can be seen from its history that Hebei Medical College first originated in Tianjin. " was approved by the Qing government in 1894, Li Hongzhang was founded in Tianjin by the Beiyang Medical Hall ; In 1912, it was renamed Beiyang Medical School; in 1913, it was renamed Zhili Public Medical College; in 1915, Zhili Public Medical College moved from Tianjin to Baoding; 1921 Medical College, Agricultural College, Higher Normal School, Law School The Hebei University was merged and the Zhili Public Medical College was renamed Hebei University Medical School; Hebei University Medical School was established independently in 1932, called Hebei Provincial Medical College; in 1937, after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the school was forced to close.Enrollment was suspended for 9 years; in January 1946, Hebei Provincial Medical College reopened in Baoding, and in the same year it began to enroll the first students after the re-entry; in 1947, Hebei Provincial Medical College temporarily moved from Baoding to Tianjin to continue the school; 1949 Tianjin was liberated in January of the same year, and in April of the same year, it was renamed Hebei Medical College; in 1952, Hebei Medical College moved back to Baoding from Tianjin; in 1958, Hebei Medical College moved from Baoding to Shijiazhuang. "

This resume is only a timeline, the specific circumstances need to be elaborated before there is a story.

In 1915, Tianjin has replaced Baoding as the provincial capital of Zhili Province. Why did Tianjin's medical school move from the provincial capital to the former provincial capital Baoding? It had nothing to do with Baoding.

It turned out that it had a mission in Baoding. It was to save the Zhili Higher Normal School in Baoding, which was facing closure. This sounded like a legend. A Tianjin medical college came to Baoding to save a school. Normal College.

According to historical records, in 1915, the Ministry of Education at that time approved the closure of Zhili Normal University and the establishment of a medical college. The background is that the higher normal education is positioned as a national institution, and the country is divided into six major regions in Beijing, Wuchang, and Nanjing. There are only one school each in Guangzhou, Northwest and Northeast. Zhili belongs to the Beijing Normal District, and there can be no two tigers in one mountain. Therefore, Zhili Higher Normal School needs to be closed and changed to a medical college, so the Zhili Public Medical School in Tianjin was moved to Baoding is running on the campus of Zhili Normal University in the west of Hebei University on the west of Qianwei Road. At the same time, the higher normal school did not really shut down, which is tantamount to concealing under the coat of medical college to survive.

Until 1921 Cao Kun was ordered to establish Hebei University, Zhili The higher normal school and the medical school jointly run the school. After that, the medical college merged with the four schools of the higher normal school, the agricultural college and the law and politics school to become the new Hebei University. Ten years later, the Heda was dissolved, and the medical school became the Hebei Province independently on the southern half of the campus of the Heda site. The medical school was closed during the Anti-Japanese War, and some teachers and students joined the National Guiyang Medical College. Hebei Medical College left Baoding for the first time.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1946, the medical school resumed and enrolled students at the original site in Baoding. However, it moved the following year. I went to Tianjin to run a school. It was 's eighth place in Tianjin. This is the second time I left Baoding. The reason for moving to the school is unknown." Old Secretary Zhao Ronglun recalled: When he moved to Tianjin, he only borrowed some houses based on the social status of the principal Qi Qingxin. When I was admitted to Hebei Medical College and reported to Tianjin, I searched the street for a long time before I found it.Impressed so far. When I found it, I discovered that the school building was a private pickle garden, and the sign of the "Wan Yuan" pickle garden had not been removed. "The school had to be moved so hard in Tianjin. It is estimated that the conditions for running a school in Baoding are worse. At the same time, the adjacent agricultural college also moved to Beijing Xiannongtan to run a school.

Hebei Medical College in 1951 ( Tianjin) Graduation Certificate

By 1952, Hebei Medical College moved back to Baoding to run a school. The reason is unknown. One possibility is that Baoding became the provincial capital of Hebei again at that time, and Tianjin is a municipality directly under the Central Government. Tianjin and Hebei are no longer one family, and Hebei is under the jurisdiction Is the school going back to Hebei? Soon after, , which was renamed from Hebei Women’s Normal College, Hebei Normal University , moved the newly established science departments to Shijiazhuang to establish , and Shijiazhuang Normal University became a later one. The embryonic form of Hebei Normal University. It can be seen that it was a trend that Hebei School moved out of Tianjin to Hebei.

Hebei Medical College came to Baoding for the third time in 1952. This time I stayed for six years. I feel that the development of the six years is still very good. From the old photos found so far, the medical school has returned to the old address shared by the Zhili Normal University and the medical college. The modern-style building should be built specifically for the medical school. At the same time, it was also built across the road. A brand-new affiliated hospital of the Medical College was built. The architectural style of the hospital is the Soviet style. It is the second hospital in the area as we know it. Later it was transformed into the first central hospital.

By 1958, the medical school left for the third time Baoding, moved to Shijiazhuang. The reason is naturally to be guessed. I saw a photo of the staff of the Second Affiliated Hospital of the Medical School at work on the first day after the medical school moved to Shijiazhuang in 1958.I feel that the relocation of the medical school should be "a long-planned", indicating that the relocation has been prepared long ago, and the campus and affiliated hospital have been constructed. This will take several years.

From this I think of Hebei Province in the early 1950s The government is preparing to move the provincial capital to Shijiazhuang. It is estimated that the relocation of Hebei Medical College is part of the relocation of the provincial capital. It's just that the construction of the medical school and the affiliated hospital is relatively easy, and they can be moved after they are built. However, the relocation project of the provincial capital is huge, and the construction speed will not be very fast. In addition, in those few years, strict economy was advocated and extravagance and waste were opposed. At this time, Tianjin was again placed under Hebei Province, and the provincial capital would naturally not go to Shijiazhuang, but turned to Tianjin instead. In this way, I was going to move to Hebei Medical College in the provincial capital, but I went to Shijiazhuang, which is not the provincial capital.

Subsequently, some institutions and universities with the word "Hebei" appeared in Tianjin. The most representative ones are the change of Tianjin Normal University to Hebei University, and Hebei Institute of Technology . I wonder if anyone has thought about moving Hebei Medical College to Tianjin again.

However, ten years later, the provincial capital moved out of Tianjin, and finally went to Shijiazhuang after two years of stay in Baoding, so the medical school finally reached the original goal of moving to the provincial capital, only ten years later. In this way, the Hebei Medical University with three inputs and three outputs in Baoding has been rooted in Shijiazhuang and developed into today's Hebei Medical University.

The last thing I want to explain is the whereabouts of the teacher Zhang Bojun in the 1921 picture of the Hebei University Medical Department sending off to the United States. Thanks to the teachers of Hebei Medical University who are engaged in school history research for telling us that the official name Zhang Bojun has been using since then is Zhang Yun (1890-1977)! It is also said that it was Zhang Bojun's. At this time, a great medical man finally emerged from the waters of history. In fact, he had already obtained a doctorate in anatomy from Harvard University in the United States. He also returned to Hebei University to engage in teaching work, and then taught all over the country, and eventually became the vice president of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences , and the chairman of the Chinese Society of Anatomy.

Mr. Zhang Yun (Zhang Bojun, Zhang Bojun) photo

It is the picture of the old Hebei University that sent Zhang Yun to my interest. I finally learned about his whereabouts after a few years. The process of Hebei University and Hebei Medical College in Baoding, Republic of China.
