8span (Currently in Huamei Village, Penghua Town, Nan'an City), 17-year-old uncle went to the Philippines to make a living. After decades of struggle, he transformed from an ordinary clerk to "the king of the Philippines cloth industry." In addition to the Philippines, the Hong family also invests in banking, insurance, flour and other industries in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia.

To get rich, think about the source. The Hong family participated in the construction of Huamei Primary School and Huamei Middle School, and established Huamei Middle School student teaching scholarships.

11span 100 The ancient residential buildings originated from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties until the early years of the Republic of China. They have a sturdy and practical Philippine style, an Indonesian style with a pointed round arch, and a matchbox-style Singapore style. Well-preserved buildings include Shayuan School, Tishan Villa, and Chaoxuan Building. Hundreds of ancient homes are scattered and scattered, blending southern Fujian style and Nanyang characteristics, with a long history, telling the struggle history of generations of Chinese and beautiful people.

beautiful village ,For a long time, the overseas Chinese here lived a leisurely life of "hand-cranking goose feather fans, waiting for Nanyang money", "relying on overseas Chinese to eat overseas Chinese, happy and happy".

Who could have imagined that in this small mountain village in the northwest corner of Nan'an, where more than 6,000 people live, there are more than 30,000 overseas Chinese relatives. For this reason, there are unique "multinational buildings" here, with hundreds of ancient dwellings preserved intact. In addition to the traditional southern Fujian style, it also includes various Nanyang styles such as Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

The clear springs in the mountains converge into a stream at the entrance of the village, from south to north, passing through the ancient house. My thoughts drifted along the stream, as if I heard the story of the gorgeous wanderers working outside in the Tishan Villa, and the sound of reading books from the Shayuan School.

multinational architecture

In the early autumn afternoon, from Nan'an city town, we will travel 50 kilometers northwest to the United States. It is located at the junction of Nan'an, Anxi and Yongchun counties. It is a remote mountainous area with an altitude of nearly 700 meters.

I stopped and asked for directions, and a few words of conversation broke the tranquility of the mountain village inadvertently. Following the direction of the fingers of the old man in the village, a small stream came into view. The stream flows quietly through the village, and the countryside and the ancient houses on both sides of the bank reflect each other, which is quite rural and leisurely.

Huamei Village did not deliberately develop, and all the ancient houses basically kept the original style. Such villages are not uncommon in Nan'an. However, there are not many people who have cleaned up the old houses like Huamei Village and kept their original appearance.

These "gorgeous homes" with mountains and rivers have been written in folk songs since ancient times. "There are gorgeous houses, no gorgeous houses, gorgeous houses, and no gorgeous daughters-in-law." The folk songs are full of the pride that the gorgeous people can't hide.

Walking in the village, you feel like you are in the Grand View Garden of International Architecture. The sturdy and practical Philippine style, the Indonesian style with a pointed round arch, the Singapore style with a matchbox... all kinds of Nanyang style buildings abound.

Zhu'an Building, which combines the local architectural features of southern Fujian and the typical Indonesian style, is a representative of "multi-national architecture". Zhu'an Building is made up of boulders, blended into the wavy angular roof ridge, rich royal blue with windows with beautiful decorative patterns, which makes the eyes shine.

The super election building on the side of the village, with a semicircular corridor connecting the main rectangular building, looks like a big ship about to set sail from a distance. This Philippine-style four-story building with 60 rooms was built in 1935 by Hong Lixuan, an overseas Chinese in the Philippines.

Built in 1935, the "super-selected building", the masonry structure reflects the practicality of the Philippine architectural style.

The hometown of overseas Chinese is enchanting, and the ancient house is homesick. The owner of the house hopes to build this "ship", to bless all the children and grandchildren to go smoothly, and also hope that this big ship will safely carry back the children who have been thinking about it day and night. There are many narrow and long holes on the outer wall of the Chaoxuan Building, about 30 cm long and 15 cm wide. It is said that they used to be the bullet holes to defend against the bandits.

The name "Youweitang" is named "Youwei", which embodies the builder's wish for future generations; Taikangtang hopes that the family will be safe, healthy and healthy; Renyitang, hope that Huamei people will maintain a heart of love and justice wherever they go... Every ancient house in Huamei Village has a beautiful meaning.

Huamei Village, located in the deep mountains, why has it become a hometown of overseas Chinese? In fact, Huamei Village was not originally called Huamei Village. According to legend, at the end of the Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, the ancestor of the Huamei Hong family migrated from the ancient city of Fengzhou to Huamei Village in order to avoid chaos. And named it "the end of the disaster", which means that the war has come to an end. With the passage of time, the "tail of the catastrophe" evolved into "Xia Wei" and later refined into "Gorgeous". The evolution of place names reflected the villagers' yearning and pursuit of a better life.

However, in the middle and late Qing dynasty, the country was turbulent, the people were not living, and the Huamei Village in the corner of the Qing Dynasty was not immune. The gorgeous people who make a living and have nowhere to live, with the spirit and spirit of their ancestors, decided to find another world. They crossed the ocean and pursued their dreams in other countries.

Huamei has not forgotten his roots. After working hard in a foreign country and having some savings, he will go home to build a building. As a result, buildings of different styles rose from the ground in small mountain villages.

The Ladder Mountain Family

The Ladder Mountain Villa, built in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, is a vivid portrayal of Huamei Youzi's hard work outside.

Tishan Villa was built by the brothers Hong Kainian, Hong Fannian, and Hong Wenju, the overseas Chinese leaders. The residential building sits west facing east and covers an area of 660 square meters. It is a Philippine-style building with four slopes and four courtyards. The two-story building has a mixed structure of brick, wood, stone and cement. The exterior of the villa is still extraordinary from a modern aesthetic point of view.

Ladder Mountain Villa

"Where there is a ladder, there are roads and aspirations, and the mountains and rivers are passionate forever." This flower-rich mountain villa is still inhabited, on the second floor. On the wall, there are still many couplets titled "Mountain of Ladder", as well as gorgeous poems with clear ink marks, and a scent of book is blowing.

The Tishan family is one of the most prestigious families in Huamei Village, and the earliest initiator and founder of Huamei Middle School. This family has a fine tradition of patriotism, love for the country, and love for education.Among them, Hong Kainian can be said to be the representative of this family.

Hong Kainian was born in Huamei Village in the 19th year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1893). He was 17 years old and went to the Philippines to make a living with his uncle. From 1916 to 1918, with Erge Yuannian and Fourth Discipline Wencao, he jointly operated the East American and South American Company to operate the cloth industry and later developed into an importer and exporter. In 1920, the Hong brothers founded the Universal Weaving Factory. After the Second World War, they formed the Southeast American Company. Later, they jointly established a large-scale textile company with the Philippine government, the Volkswagen Textile Factory, which holds 80% of the shares. The reputation of "the king of industry". The Hong brothers also founded Yimei Company in Hong Kong, invested in excess banks, opened a flour mill in Indonesia, and invested in the insurance industry in Taiwan.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the development of the Tishan family business was in full swing. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, Hong Kainian served as a member of the Philippine-China Anti-enemy Association and the 36th Standing Committee of the Manila Chinese Chamber of Commerce. After the fall of the Philippine Island, he was imprisoned by the Japanese for more than a year. After his release, he donated a huge amount of money to support the Philippine overseas Chinese anti-Japanese guerrilla detachment. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, Hong Kainian served successively as the chairman or honorary chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, the General Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, the Chamber of Commerce of Philippine Cloth Industry Importers and Exporters, the Philippine Liugui Hall, the Chinese American Family Association in the Philippines, and many other societies. The enthusiastic support of Filipinos.

Hong Kainian and his brothers, descendants to their hometown, and various charities in the Philippines donated a lot. In 1923, he donated money to build a primary school in Huamei Village in his hometown; in 1947, he donated money to establish Huamei Middle School. After 1950, when Huamei Middle School expanded its campus, it continued to remit huge sums of money and sponsored the establishment of Huamei Middle School student teaching scholarships. In addition, in 1988, it also donated to build the "New Year, Golden Grass Memorial Building" of Huamei Central Primary School, and also funded the construction of monasteries and aided poor villagers.

Gorgeous beauty, beauty in architecture, beauty in spirit. So far, Hong Zhenqian, a 40-year-old descendant of the Hong family, has not forgotten the homeland laid down by his ancestors. Although the family is working hard outside, he is alone and silently guarding it.He said: "No matter where you go, someone at home must be guarded."

Centennial School

The "famous hometown of overseas Chinese" has long been a business card of Huamei Village. The roads, bridges, schools and other facilities in the village are all deeply imprinted with "Overseas Chinese". These are all devoted to the most beautiful wishes of the overseas Chinese who have returned home to build their hometown.

So we have to mention the Shayuan School built in the Xuantong period of the Qing Dynasty. The Shayuan School is hidden in a modern reinforced concrete building. When you walk across a cement bridge, the stream is gurgling under the bridge, and the school is protected by iron cables on both sides. Although there is no "withered vines, old trees and faint crows", there is a realm of "small bridges and flowing water people".

Interior view of the Sand Garden

Compared with the carved dragons and phoenixes of other ancient houses, the sand gardens have all white walls and black tiles, just like Wuspan’s 11 paintings The Jiangnan water towns all exude the elegance and grace of sincerity. There are more than 20 classrooms in the house, and the nursing home is the dormitory and office area. After a hundred years of wind and frost, the main structure of the Shayuan School has been preserved intact.

Focusing on the words "Xuantong Three Years" on the lintel of the bluestone door, time is like rewinding the thoughts back to a hundred years ago. More than a century ago, the sound of children reading through the walls and bluestone gates engraved with "The Gate of Entrance and Virtue" and "Entry and Exit is the Gate" reverberated throughout the village.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, there were many private schools in Huamei Village. Large families invited teachers to teach at home. Children in ordinary families can only be blind. During the Xuantong period of the Qing Dynasty, seeing that the children of poor families could not afford private schools and could not go to school, Chinese people living in the Philippines such as Hong Wanzong, Hong Zhirong, Hong Jingrong and others were anxious to donate generously with the inheritance of their ancestors in the sand garden, and integrated many private schools in the surrounding area. It took three years to build.

This school has placed the expectations of too many people. In 1909, Juren Hong Yuchuan donated the seven-rank official and returned to the head of any school. Hong Jingrong took the lead in donating huge sums of money, and he responded. For a time, the funds mailed from overseas have never stopped. These funds provide for teachers and students and purchase equipment. The style of the Chinese and American people who started learning was a sensation, and Ma Zhenli, the magistrate of the county at that time, made him a "model" for the whole county. As the predecessor of Huamei Elementary School, Shayuan School became the origin of Huamei Education. At its peak, hundreds of students attended school.

Since then, Huamei Primary School has recruited students from the surrounding areas and hired famous teachers to teach and solve problems. In 1928, with the expansion of school scale, the school was no longer able to accommodate many students. Upon learning of this, relatives of overseas Chinese at home and abroad raised more than 40,000 silver dollars to build a new school building of tens of thousands of square meters and the elementary school moved out. Since then, it has also been used as a hospital, a granary, a government office, and a student dormitory at Huamei Middle School. During the Agrarian Revolution , it was also used as one of the main venues of the Red Second Detachment, responsible for publicity, redemption, and fundraising.

Nowadays, more and more descendants of overseas Chinese have settled overseas, but the old houses and houses that tell the vicissitudes of the years still stick to it. The old house is the homesickness of overseas Chinese relatives. Hong Zhenqian said: "As long as we protect them, they will often come back for a look, and often come back and walk around."
