Zhu De's original name was Zhu Yujie. In 1905, at the age of 19, Zhu Yujie went to the county to take the imperial examination. Among more than 1,000 candidates, he actually entered the top 20.

In late January 1909, 23-year-old Zhu Yujie resolutely gave up Wen and joined the army in order to serve the country with loyalty. He bid farewell to his relatives, changed his name to Zhu De, and applied for the Yunnan Army Lecture Hall from Kunming. From then on, he began his life in the military.
