On October 8, 1960, Chairman Mao wrote 4 powerful big words "hard and simple" for staff of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee. This inscription was published on the third edition of " Sichuan Daily " on October 30, 1961.
1960 was the most difficult year for the economy of New China. At the beginning of the year, the editorial of the first issue of " Hongqi " magazine analyzed the situation at that time and issued a call: "The serious natural disasters of in the past two years will inevitably affect several aspects of industrial and agricultural production this year. Therefore, we must continue to work hard and carry forward the spirit of diligence and thrift in building the country, and overcome the difficulties caused by the poor harvest of industrial and agricultural industries." Chairman Mao took action and set an example. Since October 1959, Chairman Mao has begun to eat vegetarian food and no longer eat meat. He said to the head nurse: "The country is in trouble. I should set an example, take the lead in saving, overcome difficulties with the people, don't give meat, save it and change it to foreign exchange . It doesn't matter if I get vegetarian."
