After his father died early, he begged for life with his mother. He tasted the bitter and bitter taste of the world and was bullied by the children of wealthy families.
When he was 16 years old in the 33rd year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1907), with a full hatred for the old society, he was determined to leave his hometown and go to another place to explore a new path. At that time, Yunnan was forming a national protection army. Zhao Youxin (now from Lushi Town, Fengqing County, Lincang City, Yunnan Province) returned to his hometown to recruit soldiers. Chang Zihua enthusiastically signed up and embarked on the road of military personnel. At that time, Chang Zihua's wish was to go to the battlefield to kill the enemy, protect the country, and eliminate the warlords. Later, in the battles of the National Protection and the National War, Chang Zihua showed great courage and cleverness with his strong physique and studious intelligence, and won the love of his comrades and the trust of his superiors. He was promoted from a soldier to a succession, until he was later promoted to the battalion commander of the Yunnan Provincial Government Chairman Long Yun (now from Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province).
After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Chang Zihua, who was in his prime and vigorous, returned to his hometown to recruit new recruits and handled the funeral for his mother by the order of the Yunnan Provincial Government. At that time, the so-called "parents" of Shunning County (changed Shunning County to Fengqing County in 1954) did not actively organize the people to fight against Japan, but colluded with local gentry to take the opportunity to make "national disaster money". When these local gentry heard about Chang Zihua's return to his hometown to recruit soldiers, they threatened that the battalion commander "beggar" was what a battalion commander was. Then the story happened that the people spread across the Lancang River in Yunnan that Chang Zihua washed the butts of the "dirty officials". According to the old man's recollection at that time, the story was as follows: One day after Chang Zihua returned to his hometown, the Shunning County Yamen decided to hold a banquet to entertain Chang Zihua who returned to his hometown to recruit new recruits. The location is in the living room of Mr. Hu Er's house of "Tongcheng Hu". The attendees include section chiefs, speakers and famous squire. Because he returned to his hometown, Chang Zihua did not forget his essence and did not dress up at all. Instead, he took off his military uniform and put on civilian clothes, and went to the banquet like an ordinary citizen. Chang Zihua entered the door of Mr. Hu Er's house, and after entering the living room, he saw the county magistrate personally pouring cigarettes and tea to the guests present. After two patrols, the only guard who did not entertain Chang Zichang was very uncomfortable when he looked at it, but Chang Zihua seemed to be indifferent. So a guard stood up gently and went to the street to buy a few of the highest-end "Philips" (made in the United States) cigarettes and handed them to Chang Zihua. Chang Zihua joined hands and respectfully passed a pack to each of the guests present. Similarly, it was not passed to the county magistrate.
The arrogant and snobbish county magistrate was so angry that he wanted to deal with Chang Zihua. Afterwards, Chang Zihua ordered the guards to pull the stolen official who was riding on the head of the people to Yingchun River in Shunning to wash his butt. The two guards immediately pulled out their guns, twisted the county magistrate's arms backwards, and were about to drag them out of the living room. At this time, Master Hu Er, "Tongcheng Tiger", knelt in front of the majestic Chang Zihua with a "stolen official" and pleaded for the "stolen official". After that, Chang Zihua sternly taught the gentry and officials present a lesson. Chang Zihua said: From now on, whoever passively resists Japan, who will take advantage of the country's danger to bully the people and make money from the national crisis will not be like this, and there will be no mercy! After Chang Zihua successfully completed the mission of recruiting new recruits back to his hometown. Soon after, he followed Lu Han (now from Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province) to lead his troops to the anti-Japanese front line and was appointed as the commander of the 1084th Regiment of the 183rd Division of the 60th Army of the Yunnan Army.
On April 22, 1938, the 60th Army of the Yunnan Army encountered the Japanese army in the area of Chenwafang, Shandong (now the Wafang Group of Huanglou Village, Xinglou Town, Pizhou City, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province), and launched a bloody battle of "Taierzhuang (now Taierzhuang District, Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province)" that shocked China and the world. After tenacious and brave attacks on the Japanese army, they defended Chen Wafang, Xingjialou [now Xinglou Village (South and North Village) in Xinglou Town, Pizhou City, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province], Xinzhuang (now Xinzhuang Group in Sitian Village, Xinglou Town, Pizhou City, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province). At that time, the 1084th Regiment led by Chang Zihua was responsible for the combat mission of holding on to Xingjialou.No matter how crazy the Japanese army was, they responded calmly and repelled the Japanese attack again and again, and held on for a month and two days.
On May 24, 1938, the Japanese army concentrated many times larger than Chang Zihua's troops and attacked Xingjialou in large numbers. First, swept and exploded with planes, followed by cannons, and then charged with more than 30 tanks and . Most of the houses in Xingjialou were destroyed. Chang Zihua was not afraid of danger, and calmly commanded, calling on soldiers to gather grenades to destroy enemy tanks one by one, and use light and heavy machine guns to sweep down groups of enemies. As always, Chang Zihua led the way, took the bayonet, and took the lead in rushing to the Japanese army to fight. From morning to dusk, he repelled more than 10 consecutive attacks by the enemy. Finally, because more than half of the soldiers were injured and seriously injured, he had to retreat to Dongzhuang according to the orders of his superiors (now Dongzhuang Village, Xinglou Town, Pizhou City, Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province). He was later transferred back to Kunming, Yunnan for treatment. In the Battle of Taierzhuang, the Yunnan Army was praised by the people of the whole country as the "Iron-footed Flying Tiger Soldier", and Chang Zihua was honored by the people of the whole country as the "Iron-beating Vajra and Copper-cast Arhat".
After Chang Zihua recovered from injury, he was appointed by the Yunnan Provincial Government to Songming County (now Songming County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province) as the captain of the executive team and the head of the military section. During his tenure, he maintained the two qualities of "poor background" and "fighting hero", and was strict with himself and educated his subordinates, and was highly respected and loved by the majority of officers and soldiers and the people. Folk comments said: Chief Chang has always been approachable, has a clear distinction between love and hate, has never been in stolen officials, is honest and honest, never competes for fame and fortune with heroes, and can endure humiliation. It is really rare.
Chang Zihua's tomb is located on Xiaoyuan Mountain in Songming County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Its tombstones and inscriptions were specially made by later generations and wrote poems for future generations to commemorate for eternal purposes. Inscription: "Since I was young, I was in a difficult position, sixteen troops. I attacked Yuan's family, and returned to the hometown. I defended Yunnan, and passed on the ancients. I was promoted to the commander of the regiment and went to Shandong. I was injured and returned to Song, and I suffered with the people."
