October 17, 1933—Einstein fled Nazi Germany
October 17, 1933, Einstein fled Nazi Germany and headed for the United States. After the Nazi Party seized the German regime in January 1933, Einstein became the primary target of persecution in the scientific community; in March, he stayed in Belgium, and on September 9, he discovered that the Gestapo tracking, crossed the sea to the UK at night, and in October, he transferred to the United States to serve as a professor at the newly established Princeton Institute of Advanced Studies until he retired in 1945. In 1940, he obtained American nationality.
Einstein was found by chance at the entry registration card (above) at the London Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom. After 80 years, it is still well preserved. The card is now on display at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the UK.
Einstein fled to the UK via Belgium and was required to fill out his entry registration card when entering the country. It can be seen on the card that on May 26, 1933, Einstein gave up his German nationality and changed himself to an Swiss citizen.
In April 1955, Einstein was diagnosed with aortic aneurysm . He felt dyspnea in his sleep at midnight on the 18th. The aortic aneurysm ruptured and caused a cerebral hemorrhage and ruptured, and died in Princeton. During the autopsy, a doctor named Thomas Harvey took Einstein's brain privately without the permission of Einstein's family, hoping that the neuroscience community in the future could study Einstein's brain to discover why he was smart.
For the Nazis, Einstein was not just a Jewish scientist. His reputation at all levels of society gives him a large audience, which means political influence. As a loyal democratic and peaceful man, his opposition to the political purposes of the Nazis and German nationalists has become the main target of several years of slander wars. The Nazis also had their own ways in this regard. On January 30, 1933, Hitler "taken over" the regime, which provided a good opportunity for "settling accounts after the autumn". On March 2, 1933, Einstein, and a group of artists and writers, were severely criticized by the Nazi party newspaper "National Observer".
Fortunately, the world showed a miracle at that time, and Einstein did not enter the concentration camp. On the day Hitler seized power, Einstein and his wife Elsa safely left Germany and embarked on a journey to visit the United States. Historical irony is that Einstein's trip was to "enhance German-US friendship" and was funded by the United States. Einstein quickly seized the hint from foreign news and fled Germany.
