So, what kind of photo is this?

In 1936, Edgar Snow broke through numerous blockades and arrived at Northwest Revolutionary Base , where the Communist Party of China was located at that time. From June to October 1936, he conducted on-site interviews at the revolutionary base in the northwest of my country (Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region centered on Yan'an). Based on the first-hand materials obtained in the inspection, he completed the writing of " Traveling West ". As a Western news reporter, Snow made an objective evaluation of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese Revolution and made a fair report to the world.

Edgar Snow

In the book, he truly reported to the world about China and The Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and many Red Army leaders and Red Army generals. The leader of the Chinese revolution, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai with great personality, Lin Biao, the "Eagle of the Red Army" and Xu Haidong, who lost more than 60 relatives for the revolution, were vividly seen on the paper.

This book "The Westward Journey" is also known as "Red Stars Shining in China". The cover in many people remember that there is a picture of a horn soldier blowing charge . In fact, this is also one of the illustrations in this book. It is a photo taken by Edgar Snow himself outside the south gate of the Fort Fort in Tongxin County, Ningxia. This photo records a heroic trumpeter.

When it comes to the origin of this photo, it has to start with Snow's interview. In his long conversation with Mao Zedong, Snow keenly realized that the masses of workers, peasants, soldiers and revolutionary intellectuals under the leadership of the Communist Party of China are an invincible force and "will inevitably throw the last barbaric tyranny of imperialism that currently enslaves the Eastern world into the abyss of history."

Therefore, Snow wanted to take a photo that symbolizes the Red Army as the vanguard of China's anti-Japanese war, and truly report the scene of the Chinese revolution to the world with pictures and texts.

Snow and Mao Zedong

On this day, Snow walked around with his camera. He received special approval from Mao Zedong that he could interview and take photos throughout the base area in addition to confidential locations. Snow, who was struggling to find inspiration, was suddenly attracted by a slogan.

Snow looked up and saw a heroic soldier blowing a charge beside the flicking military flag. The upright posture and high spirit combined with the military flag and the charge show the spirit of the Red Army and the firm will to fight the brutal enemy unremittingly. Snow quickly recorded the scene with the camera in his hand, and the classic "Voice of the War of Resistance" appeared.

The soldier who noticed someone taking a photo immediately turned around and walked up to talk to Snow. Snow asked the soldier, "What's your name?" The soldier saluted and replied, "Report to reporters, my name is Xie Liquan."

Snow continued to ask, "Listen to the accent, are you from the south?"

"I am from Zhangmu Township, Xingguo, Jiangxi."

"OKOK, and I met another Xingguo people. In the Lenin Room, I met the 22-year-old director of the Political Department of the Second Division, Xiao Hua , I saw a person named Zeng in Liandu Hospital. There are so many people in Xingguo who are the Red Army."

Xie Liquan told Snow: "There were more than 50,000 people participating in the Red Army at that time, but unfortunately, a lot of people sacrificed in Long March ." In fact, the Red Army in Xingguo County is more than what Xie Liquan said. According to data released by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, during the revolutionary war of , Xingguo County had a population of 250,000 and 80,000 people joined the Red Army.

Snow was greatly shocked by this after knowing it and expressed his admiration. The staff accompanying Snow told him that Xie Liquan was a 13-year-old "Red Guy" who joined the Red Army. He served as the number-man of the Division, platoon leader, company instructor, and youth section chief of the Political Department of the Fifth Division of the Red Third Army. He is now the secretary of the General Branch of the First Army's Teaching Battalion.

Then, the staff told Snow that the teaching battalion was organizing soldiers' training, and Xie Liquan was demonstrating for the troop soldiers. After hearing the introduction, Snow gave a thumbs up and praised the young battalion-level cadre in front of him, who was only nineteen years old.

Not long after, Snow compiled the book "Red Stars Shine in China". Among them, Snow is a photo taken by Xie Liquan who blows the trumpet and is named "The Voice of the War of Resistance". At that time, due to the pressure from the Kuomintang, the book could only be named "The Journey to the West". "The Journey to the West" not only ranks "The Voice of the War of Resistance" on the first page of the book, but also serves as the main composition of the cover.

From then on, wherever "The Westward Journey" went, the young Red Army soldier's warlock sounded. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, this enlarged photo has been displayed eye-catchingly in the exhibition hall of the Military Museum. However, Xie Liquan never boasted about this matter until his old friend left, and he told his wife about it with emotion. So there was the beginning scene, but he still told his wife: Just you and I know this.
