Guo Rugui: The "red agent" under Dong Biwu's command
1945, the Anti-Japanese War was about to usher in the dawn of victory. However, Guo Rugui, who had already entered the upper class of the Kuomintang, was worried. He had been searching for Communists but could not get in touch.
As early as 1928, 21-year-old Guo Rugui became a Communist Party member under the introduction of Yuan Jingming. But at that time, Chiang Kai-shek had openly betrayed the revolution and pointed his gun at the Communists. Although Guo Ruo-gui was in the army of his cousin Guo Ruo-dong, Guo Ruo-dong had already obeyed Chiang Kai-shek's instructions.
Guo Rudong is not sure about Guo Rugui's identity, but just in case, he chose to send Guo Rugui to Japanese non-commissioned officer school . In 1930, Guo Rugui arrived in Japan and studied military technology in Japan. Especially when the War of Resistance Against Japan was about to win, Chiang Kai-shek was not thinking about how to create a new peaceful and democratic life, but was determined to provoke a civil war. Guo Ruogui was already disappointed with Chiang Kai-shek and the corrupt Kuomintang.
He knew how excited the anti-Japanese base under the leadership of the Communist Party was, and he also clearly realized that the Communist Party is the hope for the future. He urgently hopes to contact the organization and return to the organization.

Lucky, in May 1945, Guo Rugui happened to meet Ren Tiyou, an old classmate from Huangpu in Chongqing. He was very happy and hoped to contact the party organization through Ren Tiyou, but Ren Tiyou is now in the Central Military Academy and is in a difficult situation.
Although Ren Tiyou could not lend a helping hand to him, Ren Tiyou had a younger brother named Ren Lianru, which brought great hope to Guo Rugui.
Ren Lianru is a Communist Party member. He works in the Social Department of the CPC Central Committee and is under the leadership of Communist Party leader Dong Biwu. Late at night three days after meeting Ren Tiyou, Ren Lianru found Guo Rugui. He claimed that he was a senior employee of Sichuan Salt Bank and did not reveal his secret to Guo Rugui.

As a great celebrity in front of Chiang Kai-shek, Guo Rugui always gives orders according to Chiang Kai-shek's intentions and whoever clicks his name will have to stand up and say "yes". In front of Chiang Kai-shek, he persuaded Chiang Kai-shek in an incisive way, shakes Chiang Kai-shek's strategy, and creates an advantage for the Communist troops; in front of the Kuomintang, he can "eliminate the Communist army" in one go.
Almost few people doubt his identity, except for one person - Du Yuming, a senior Kuomintang general.

According to data records, Guo Rugui was very smart. He concealed his identity very well. To the point of being seamless, few people from the Kuomintang paid attention to him, but once the Kuomintang general Du Yuming went to his house and found a "suspicious point".
You should know what kind of life are many Kuomintang generals living? Even during the war, no one could stop them from lingering in the luxury of drinking and having fun. The home was even more luxurious and grand, completely different from the displaced and homeless state of the people during the war.
What does Guo Rugui’s home look like? Guo Rugui is the lieutenant general and a senior leader of the Kuomintang. But when Du Yuming went to his house, he found that the sofa in the living room of his house had several patches, which made Du Yuming confused.
Du Yuming thought: "I am already 'clean' enough in the Kuomintang. Guo Rugui's family is even shabby than mine. Who is he not the Communist Party?"
It is too difficult to find someone like Guo Rugui in the Kuomintang team. It’s not a careful preparation for Chiang Kai-shek’s trip, from food to travel. When Hu Zongnan welcomed Chiang Kai-shek to Yan'an in 1947, he not only arranged the best diplomatic hotel in Yan'an for Chairman Chiang, but also specially brought Chiang Kai-shek's tableware, toilet and other daily necessities from Xi'an.
After Chiang Kai-shek arrived in Yan'an, he was shocked to see the hardships of the Communist Party living in a cave and sleeping in a broken bed. So compared with the two, Guo Rugui's simple lifestyle is more inclined toward Communists, which makes the meticulous Du Yuming suspicious.

In May 1948, Guo Rugui was appointed as the director of the lieutenant general of the Third Department of the Ministry of National Defense (i.e. the Operations Department), and was also sent to Xuzhou to serve as the chief of staff of the Army Headquarters with Gu Zhutong as the commander-in-chief.
Du Yuming raised objections at that time, and he also made a special trip to meet Gu Zhutong and seriously advised Gu Zhutong: "I don't think Guo Rugui can be allowed to serve as director. I think there is something wrong with this person. I suspect he is an undercover sent by the CCP. We need to investigate clearly."
" However, Gu Zhutong did not believe Du Yuming at that time. He refuted Du Yuming's words: "Guo Rugui is the person Jiang Gong trusts the most. If he is not trustworthy, then there will be no credible people in the Kuomintang. "Gu Zhutong did not believe Du Yuming's statement of doubting Guo Rugui at all.
Of course, Du Yuming had no real evidence for Guo Rugui's identity, and he could not convince others. But his suspicion of Guo Rugui did not dissolve with the passage of time.

Huaihai Battle , Chiang Kai-shek instructed the Ministry of National Defense to formulate a "Xu-Beng Battle Plan" to "concentrate troops near Bengbu to break the People's Liberation Army offensive". He also appointed Du Yuming as the deputy commander-in-chief of the Xuzhou "Suppression Chief" and commander of the Second Corps.
Chiang Kai-shek once sent people to recruit Ask Du Yuming's opinion on the "Xu-Beng Campaign Plan", Du Yuming expressed support for this plan and decided to stick to Bengbu. Du Yuming also personally wrote to Chiang Kai-shek, proposing that the battle deployment is commanded by Liu Zhi and be implemented quickly as planned, otherwise there is a possibility that the People's Liberation Army will be restrained and unable to retreat.
In accordance with the commander-in-chief of the Central China "Bandit Suppression" headquarters, Bai Chongxi proposed the idea of "guarding the river and defending the Huai River", Chief of Staff Gu Zhutong and Minister of National Defense He Yingqin held an operational meeting at the Ministry of National Defense, proposing that "guarding the river and defending the Huai River", and advocated concentrating a large number of troops on both sides of the Jinpu Railway between Xuzhou and Bengbu. Guo Rugui strongly urged Chiang Kai-shek to fight outside Xuzhou.
Guo Rugui's idea was to disperse the Kuomintang troops, so that the Kuomintang troops could be divided and encircled and annihilated by the People's Liberation Army during movement, which is an advantage for the People's Liberation Army.
He Yingqin asked Guo Rugui to formulate a combat plan and hand it over to Chiang Kai-shek for approval. Before this plan was issued, Guo Rugui had already secretly passed it to the People's Liberation Army troops.

October 1948, the Kuomintang gathered 600,000 troops, centered on Xuzhou, and used the two railway lines of Jinpu and Longhai to form a "one-point and two-line" defensive front and adopt a strategic defensive trend.
11, Du Yuming flew to Nanjing to meet Chiang Kai-shek. When he learned that Chiang Kai-shek did not firmly implement the "Xu-Beng Battle Plan" but instead adopted the proposition of "Defending the river must guard the Huai River", Du Yuming was upset and helpless.

But the result was that on November 22, 1948, all Huang Baitao's corps were annihilated in the Nianzhuang area. Huang Baitao, who was then the commander of the Seventh Corps of the Kuomintang, was defeated and died in the Huaihai Battle.
1949, Du Yuming himself was captured by People's Liberation Army soldiers in Zhanglaozhuang Village, Zhangzhuangzhai Town, Xiao County, Anhui Province, and started his career as a prisoner of war.

Huaihai Battle became a defeat that Du Yuming could not let go in his life, and it also became a turning point in his entire life. Many years later in "The End of the Huaihai Battle", Du Yuming said:
"I think Chiang Kai-shek and Gu Zhu both completely believed in the mercy of the little devil Guo Rugui, which caused this bad situation. I want to ask Guo Rugui why he did not retreat to the vicinity of Bengbu as planned. When he was hesitating, he saw that Gu Zhutong and others agreed to Guo Rugui to report this plan, he felt that it was useless to argue alone. If he could not speak out, he would lose Chiang Kai-shek's favor."
Du Yuming is a student of the first phase of the Whampoa Military Academy , Guo Rugui is a graduate of the fifth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy, and Guo Rugui is a short stature, so Du Yuming called Guo Rugui a "little devil".
Du Yuming always had doubts in his heart, but the war was urgent at that time, and he wanted to take care of Huang Baitao's Corps and lead troops to lift the siege of Huang Wei's Corps. He had no real evidence, and had no time to report to Chiang Kai-shek, and just waited for the end of his capture.

After the three major battles of Liaoshen, Huaihai , and Pingjin, the Kuomintang Chiang Kai-shek lost the hearts of the people and millions of troops were lost. Chiang Kai-shek was always in a bad mood, and even his subordinates were always careful when they reported to him. At that time, Guo Rugui found Ren Lianru and hoped that he could tell the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China: He hoped that he could be allowed to leave the dark Jiang family dynasty and work in the liberated area.
After Ren Lianru asked the Central Committee for instructions, he replied to Guo Rugui:
"The Party understands your wish very well. However, after repeated research, it is believed that you have little effect in the liberated area. It is expected that after the People's Liberation Army crossed the river, Chiang Kai-shek would inevitably try to consolidate the southwest. At that time, there will be a fierce battle. You might as well strive to master a force and hold an uprising when the People's Liberation Army marched into the southwest. Isn't this more effective than going to the liberated area?"
In this way, Guo Rugui did not leave the corrupt officialdom that he hated and continued to persevere. After Gu Zhutong's recommendation, Guo Rugui was appointed as the commander of the 72nd Army of the Kuomintang by Chiang Kai-shek and headed to Sichuan.
Chiang Kai-shek asked Guo Rugui to rebuild this army that was surrounded and annihilated in the Huaihai Campaign. As soon as Guo Rugui received the appointment, he began to recruit troops. He asked the Kuomintang Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Logistics Headquarters for a lot of weapons and equipment, and then set off for Sichuan.
Guo Rugui formed the new 72nd Army in Sichuan. Many Communist military cadres were also arranged in this army to better control the troops. At the same time, Ren Lianru came to Sichuan as a senior employee of Chongqing Sichuan Salt Bank to maintain constant contact with Guo Rugui.

People's Liberation Army's millions of troops fought Yangtze River , and soon captured large cities such as Nanjing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. The Kuomintang army fled in scattered and remnants of the Kuomintang troops such as Bai Chongxi Group and Yu Hanmou Group also attempted to rank in the southwest and resist stubbornly.
Chiang Kai-shek also placed his last hope in the southwest. He went to Chongqing to convene all the generals and hold a combat meeting to guard the southwest. Lu Han, who was in Yunnan at that time, saw the situation clearly and was reluctant to go to the appointment with Chiang Kai-shek's invitation.
Chiang Kai-shek did not forget Guo Rugui's army. He also summoned Guo Rugui himself to inquire about the combat situation of the army. He entrusted Guo Ruogui with important tasks and appointed him as the commander of the 22nd Corps, directly commanding the 21st Army, the 44th Army, the 72nd Army, and the three independent divisions. Chiang Kai-shek asked Guo Ruogui's troops to do their best to prevent the People's Liberation Army from entering Sichuan.
Chiang Kai-shek never thought of Guo Rugui's true identity. When the People's Liberation Army troops entered Sichuan, Guo Rugui led his troops to revolt according to the previous plan formulated with Ren Lianru.
Guo Rugui was finally able to return to the embrace of the people as he wished. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he first served as the Director of Transportation of the South Sichuan Administrative Office, and later taught at Nanjing Military Academy. After Guo Rugui reported to Nanjing Military Academy in 1950, he stayed for nearly twenty years.
And in these twenty years, on the tenth anniversary of the founding of New China in 1959, his old friend Du Yuming performed well in prison and was regained his freedom as the first batch of amnesty criminals.
