On October 14, 1952, Shangganling Battle began. He endured the pain and continued to move towards the enemy's firepower point. When approaching the fire point, he threw the grenade out, but failed to completely destroy the enemy's fire point. Finally, he dragged his seriously injured body, endured the severe pain, jumped up, rushed towards the enemy's gun hole, and used his body to block the enemy's firepower. The troops took advantage of the situation to advance, captured the 597.9 highland, and wiped out the two battalions of the enemy defenders.
After Huang Jiguang's death, the military party committee posthumously appointed Huang Jiguang as a member of the Communist Party of China . The leadership of the Volunteer Army posthumously awarded him the title of "Special Hero". In April 1953, Huang Jiguang's mother Deng Fangzhi attended the National Women's Congress as a representative. Mao Zedong invited Deng Fangzhi to visit his home in Zhongnanhai to express his respect for the hero.
In September 2009, Huang Jiguang was rated as "100 touching figures since the founding of New China" by 11 departments including the Propaganda Department of , Organization Department of , and the Ministry of Civil Affairs.On March 9, 2018, CCTV's " Letter·China " column was broadcast.
