Qujing City is one of the 16 prefecture-level divisions and one of the eight prefecture-level cities in Yunnan Province. It is also a city with strong comprehensive strength in Yunnan Province. Qujing City has a total population of nearly 6 million and governs 3 districts, 5 counties, and 1 county-level city, for a total of 9 districts and counties. So, how did the zoning pattern of the nine districts and counties in Qujing City come into being?
First, let’s talk about the basic situation of Yunnan Province. Yunnan Province is a province in the southwest of my country. The terrain structure is relatively complex and is generally dominated by mountains, hills, jungles, etc. In ancient history, transportation and communication were very inconvenient in such an environment. However, with the development of the economy, the transportation in Yunnan Province has been greatly improved, and the construction of railways and highways has been gradually improved. According to the statistics of the seventh census in 2020, the total population of Yunnan Province is more than 47 million. Among the southwestern provinces, such a population base is not small.
In recent years, Yunnan Province has actively developed tourism and specialty agricultural products, and achieved very good results. In 2021, Yunnan Province's total GDP reached 2.71 trillion. At present, Yunnan Province has 8 prefecture-level cities and 8 autonomous prefectures, with a total of 16 prefecture-level divisions, namely: Kunming City, Qujing City, Yuxi City, Zhaotong City, Baoshan City, Lijiang City, Pu'er City, Lin Cangshi, Dehong Autonomous Prefecture, Nujiang Autonomous Prefecture, Diqing Autonomous Prefecture, Dali Autonomous Prefecture, Chuxiong Autonomous Prefecture, Honghe Autonomous Prefecture, Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture, Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture.
Qujing City is one of the eight prefecture-level cities in Yunnan Province and is also a city with very strong comprehensive strength in Yunnan Province. At present, Qujing City has 3 districts, 5 counties, and 1 county-level city under its jurisdiction, with a total of 9 districts and counties under its jurisdiction, namely: Qilin District, Zhanyi District, Malong District, Luliang County, and Shizong County , Luoping County, Fuyuan County, Huize County, Xuanwei City.
In the long history of Yunnan, a very brilliant civilization has been nurtured. It must be said that there are big differences between Yunnan culture and the culture of the Central Plains. In the ancient history of my country, until the Yuan Dynasty, all dynasties followed the two-level division of prefectures and counties. After the Yuan Dynasty unified the country in 1279, its territory was unprecedentedly large. Relying on the two-level divisions of prefectures and counties in the Tang and Song dynasties, it was impossible to effectively manage each region. Under such circumstances, the Yuan Dynasty drew on the experience of Jin Guoxing Shangshutai and established a provincial system.
The Yuan Dynasty divided the country into 10 provinces, such as Sichuan Province, Huguang Province, Yunnan Province, etc. Please note that there are great differences in regional divisions between Yunnan Province at this time and contemporary Yunnan Province. After Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty in 1368, since the Ming Dynasty had two capitals in the north and south, plus 13 provinces, a divisional pattern of north and south Zhili and 13 provinces emerged. In view of the complicated situation in Yunnan, Mu Guogong of the Ming Dynasty guarded Yunnan for generations and strengthened the management of various parts of Yunnan.
In the mid-17th century, the Qing Dynasty gradually eliminated the peasant uprising armies and various Nanming regimes in various places, and established its own rule. The Qing Dynasty further improved and adjusted the provinces of the Ming Dynasty, and established a total of 18 provinces, and there was a saying that there were 18 provinces in Han Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Yongzheng, the Qing Dynasty adjusted the zoning pattern of the southwestern provinces and placed Wumeng Prefecture, Dongchuan Prefecture, Zhenxiong Prefecture and other places in Sichuan Province under the management of Yunnan Province, establishing the current zoning pattern of Yunnan Province.
During the Qing Dynasty, various state capitals in Yunnan Province underwent large-scale adjustments, namely: Yunnan Prefecture, Wuding Prefecture, Dali Prefecture, Heqing Prefecture, Lijiang Prefecture, Yongbei Prefecture, Yongchang Prefecture, Shunning Prefecture, and Chuxiong Prefecture. Fu, Yao'an Fu, Jingdong Fu, Menghua Fu, Pu'er Fu, Qujing Fu, Zhaotong Fu, Chenjiang Fu, Guangnan Fu, Dongchuan Fu, Kaihua Fu, Guangxi Fu, Lin'an Fu, Yuanjiang Fu, Zhenyuan Fu, Zhenxiong Prefecture.
In 1912, after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, our country entered a situation of warlords fighting. Due to the melee between various warlords, serious damage was caused to various parts of Yunnan.In the blink of an eye, we have reached the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the end of large-scale wars, our country has entered the stage of post-war reconstruction, production resumption, and economic development. A series of important projects in various places have also begun. In Yunnan Province, a series of special zones have been successively established, such as Yiliang Zone, Qujing Zone, Honghe Zone, etc.
After the establishment of Qujing District, it has jurisdiction over 7 counties, namely: Qujing County, Zhanyi County, Xuanwei County, Pingyi County, Malong County, Songming County, and Xundian County. In 1954, the Yiliang Prefecture was revoked, and the six counties originally under the Yiliang Prefecture were placed under the management of the Qujing Prefecture. The jurisdiction of Qujing District has been further expanded. At the same time, several counties in Qujing Prefecture began to change their names one after another. Xuanwei County was renamed Rongfeng County, and Pingyi County was renamed Fuyuan County.
From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, several counties in Qujing Prefecture were merged. In 1964, Huize County under the jurisdiction of Dongchuan City was placed under the management of Qujing Prefecture. At this time, Qujing Prefecture had jurisdiction over 13 counties, namely: Qujing County, Xundian County, Xuanwei County, Huize County, Fuyuan County, Zhanyi County, Shizong County, Luoping County, Luliang County, and Yiliang County. County, Songming County, Malong County, Lunan County. In the late 1960s, after the national prefectures were renamed as regions, Qujing Prefecture was renamed Qujing District.
After entering the 1990s, the Qujing area continued to develop, and the area no longer met the needs of the times. In 1997, Qujing area was abolished and Qujing prefecture-level city was established. The original county-level city of Qujing was abolished and Qilin District was established. At the same time, Zhanyi County was reorganized. Luliang County, Luoping County, Huize County, Malong County, Fuyuan County, Shizong County, and Xuanwei County-level cities under the jurisdiction of the original Qujing area were placed under the management of Qujing City.
At this stage, Qujing City has jurisdiction over 1 district, 1 county-level city, and 7 counties, for a total of 9 districts and counties. After entering the 21st century, with the continuous rapid development of Qujing City, the urban area has further expanded and the urban population has further increased. In 2016, Zhanyi County was abolished and Zhanyi District was established. In 2018, Malong County was abolished and Malong District was established. As of this time, Qujing City’s divisional structure of three districts, five counties, and one county-level city has been completely formed.
