Born in 1942, he engaged in technical work in a shipyard after graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1965 with a major in ship electrical automation. In 1978, he returned to his alma mater to study for a master's degree in . In 1981, he went to Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Institute (now Jiangsu University of Science and Technology) to teach, starting nearly 30 years of teaching, scientific research, and management work.
