Sony recently filed a patent that is described as a device capable of "generating video using synthetic inputs of multiple cameras". It may be a branch of PSVR 2, which is currently scheduled to be released in February 2023. The application of this new AR method seems not obvious at the moment, but it seems to draw on the multi-camera tracking system used in early VR devices. Although AR games are mostly classified as some mobile games and some Nintendo 3DS games, Sony has obviously also been involved in this field before. In 2021, the company filed a patent describing a personal assistant for PSVR 2. The patent mentions technologies such as eye tracking and virtual scanning of the user's real-world gaming space to further integrate the AR assistant, and given that Sony once again expressed interest in AR gaming, something of this nature seems to be revealed in the near future.

This latest patent describes more specifically an AR gaming space drawn by multiple cameras, where players wear a head-mounted device that might represent the PSVR 2, from which they can customize their own views. In short, this seems like a way to allow players to see themselves in a third-person way. While it may seem strange, it will likely become a new way to play. Game consoles are the only major home console product line that provides important support for VR, indicating that Sony's interest in VR and AR gaming is unlikely to diminish in the near term.

Of course, this does not mean that this unusual multi-camera system will definitely be implemented; most large companies do not explicitly express their interest in using them when applying for patents. In 2016, Sony applied for a patent for a VR gaming glove. But, so far, none of this has happened. Additionally, in 2021, a patent that is very similar to the latest patent was filed, which describes a camera and microphone system for tracking certain gestures and sounds of players like Xbox Kinect. While similar functionality may be implemented in the future, such technologies have not yet been implemented.
Despite the innovative new camera system, PSVR 2 still looks like a great new step for virtual reality gaming world. With a brand new headset, a completely revamped controller , and a range of games expected to be released in 2023, this is undoubtedly a great time for Sony fans to enter VR and AR games.
