It is reported that Activision will not launch a new Call of Duty official game in 2023, but plans to launch a paid expansion pack that contains the new "battle content" of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2".
Call of Duty leaker The GhostofHope initially shared news about the new paid event for Modern Warfare 2 DLC, claiming that it will be bundled with the 20th anniversary of the "Greatest Map Pack", which includes the classic maps of the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2, as well as maps throughout the series.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier stepped in to confirm the news after the GhostofHope's DLC leak. "Next year ( Activision Blizzard ) will sell new content, an expansion or something like that for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2." Although Schreier admits he is "not sure exactly what it will look like", he claims it "has a battle thing too."
It is reported that the expansion will replace Call of Duty's new main series in 2023 - Schreier previously claimed that next year will be the first time that the core series has skipped annual release in nearly 20 years, "because the recent series of entries failed to meet expectations."
Although an Activision statement failed to deny Schreier's claim, the publisher's subsequent earnings report for the second quarter of 2022 showed that the company plans to launch "new paid content" for the Call of Duty ecosystem in 2023. Some initially thought this meant that new works in the series will be released next year, but Modern Warfare 2's paid expansion fits that description.
Whatever Activision’s plans for 2023 are, it’s unlikely that the company will be ready to share more until the release of “ Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” on October 28.
The launch of Modern Warfare 2 marks the beginning of the busy period of the Call of Duty series. The Battle Royale spin-off game Call of Duty: Warzone 2 will be released on November 16, and the mobile version will also be available on iOS and Android platforms next year.
