On Wednesday at GI Live 2022, Shuihei Yoshida, head of the Independent Developer Program at PlayStation, discussed the expansion of the PlayStation Plus service and how the company sees adding new games to the service at launch.

Yoshida said: "We believe in paid sale." He refers to the life cycle of modern digital games similar to movies being released in cinemas and logged on to streaming services a few months later.

"New PS Plus, like the old PS Plus, we still release two or three new games every month, and the new PS Plus contains hundreds of games for players to experience. For Extra, our approach is to help publishers with lifecycle management.

I used to manage the first party on (PS), so I know it's like a movie - a movie first goes on theaters and then switches to paid viewing, or subscription services, or free TV, generating new revenue and reaching more viewers every time.

In the same way, we believe that a paid release of a game is included in PS Plus, maybe six months, three months or three years later, when the game's sales drop Extra, can help introduce these games to a new and wider audience.

Some people may have missed it when these games come out, which is a great opportunity to play these games and generate word of mouth, or if there is a DLC or sequel, we can help boost more viewers’ interest in this series. Therefore, publishers are encouraged to take advantage of these services in managing the life cycle of each game.”
