Patek Philippe released a large number of new watches this morning, shocking the watch industry. Among them is 5373P-001.
This is just released 5373P-001, this dual-second chasing single-button chronograph combined with a perpetual calendar mechanism, comes with a 38.3mm × 12.93mm round case, made of heavyweight 950 platinum, with a dynamic charcoal and red dial with vertical satin finish. It's a powerful mechanical combination, with its powerful dial design further highlighting it, which is very similar to some unique pieces Patek Philippe had previously.
But this is not the weirdest part of the brand new 5373P-001. The most surprising element here is that 5373P-001 actually has the so-called “destruction” direction that is best suited to left-handed collectors. In other words, the movement has been reversed, so the crown and chronograph buttons are now located at nine o'clock on the left side of the case, rather than the traditional right-hand side at about three o'clock.
so Patek Philippe is copying the homework of Rolex ? If so, they at least changed something to make it look less obvious, quoting a meme. Patek Philippe is not good at imitation, and they did prepare a sentence on the day of release, citing the 1920s 18k gold double-second chassis chronograph, which was housed in a cushion box with the “destro” orientation, which was made at the request of a left-handed customer and sold through the former Grogan Jewelry Company in Pittsburgh.
In November 2006, the watch was sold at the Christie's Geneva auction for an incredible 2,372,000 Swiss franc , and at the time of the auction it became the seventh most expensive watch ever sold at the auction. If Patek Philippe needs a proof of concept, the left-hand double-second chronograph can find the collector's audience, it's there.
In the release information of its new watch, Patek Philippe described the new 5373P-001 as an extension of its contemporary classic double-second chasing single-button chronograph (with perpetual calendar). 5372P does, in some ways. The two watches have similar feature kits and even have the same movement inside: CHR 27-525 PS Q.
From a practical point of view, Patek Philippe wants to create a clumsy 5372P, just rotate the case, movement and dial layout (just see how the chronograph switches from the 369 format on the 5372P to 39:12 on the 5373P) and you have a brand new watch.
However, the appearance of 5373P-001 is completely different from all 5372P examples. Whether it's blue sunburst or rose gold (aka salmon) dial color options, the 5372P is a well-balanced but typical conservative watch. It feels like it can come from almost any era of Patek Philippe. 5373P-001 is the same beast, but a completely different animal, and its design code seems to be more suitable for video games or Formula 1 tracks than the Swiss tradition. Just look at the strap choice – no shiny crocodile scales are seen, instead 5373P is paired with a black calfskin strap, which is decorated with embossed textile pattern and bright red contrast stitching.
