z0 At 1:47:12.6 seconds on the 21st, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in Nantou County, Taiwan. The main shock lasted about 102 seconds. The earthquake was caused by the dislocation of the Chelongpu fault. After the earthquake occurred, a surface rupture zone of about 100 kilometers occurred on the surface, and the maximum dislocation between the upper and lower walls of the fault can reach 7-8 meters. The seismic fault appears as a thrust dislocation from east to west; it is located approximately east of the Chelongpu fault line. The 15-kilometer site has an overall horizontal displacement of 3-4 meters to the northwest, and the maximum is 8.5 meters in the east, and the uplift rises from 0.5 (south section) to 9.8 meters (north section).

The earthquake caused more than 2,000 deaths, more than 8,000 people were injured, and 27,000 houses collapsed. The earthquake also caused all trains on the island of Taiwan to be stopped, the nuclear power plants of the first and second nuclear plants were tripped and power-cut, and the high-voltage transmission line towers were damaged. Power outages across Taiwan have caused large-scale landslides and soil liquefaction disasters. The total economic loss is about 9.2 billion yuan, accounting for about 3.3% of annual GDP.

In this earthquake, parts of Fujian, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangxi on the mainland of the motherland were also affected to varying degrees.

This is the most devastating earthquake in the history of the earthquake in Taiwan. This earthquake not only changed the topography of the fault, but also destroyed countless families. In the blood and tears, Taiwan began to strengthen earthquake prevention education.

In order to remind the public to attach importance to earthquake prevention and disaster relief measures, after the earthquake, Wufeng Township was planned to be transformed into an "Earthquake Memorial Museum" to preserve the original site of the earthquake, record the earthquake history, and provide the public and schools with live teaching materials on earthquake education. On February 13, 2001, it was officially named the "September 21 Earthquake Education Park" to demonstrate its memorial and educational significance.

Why do earthquakes often occur in Taiwan?

Taiwan is the largest island in my country, with beautiful scenery and rich products. It is known as a treasure island, but it happens to be one of the world's famous earthquake zones.

As we all know, earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan. Take this year as an example, as of August 31, Taiwan has reported 59 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher (according to the regulations of the early report management, earthquakes of magnitude 4 or less in Taiwan are not normal early reports Scope), the largest earthquake was the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the waters near Hualien County, Taiwan on February 6.

Distribution of earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above in Taiwan from January 1 to August 31, 2018.

The frequent occurrence of earthquakes in Taiwan is mainly due to Taiwan’s location in the boundary area where the Pacific plate, the Philippine plate and the Eurasian plate interact. Active, belongs to the Pacific Rim seismic belt. Z4z

The Pacific Rim Seismic Zone

The Pacific Rim Seismic Zone is the world's largest seismic activity zone. Approximately 80% of the world's shallow earthquakes, 90% of intermediate earthquakes and almost all of the deep earthquakes are concentrated in the Pacific Rim seismic belt. The Pacific Seismic Belt is an area where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur around the Pacific Ocean. It is like a huge ring, distributed around the Pacific Ocean, separating the continents and the oceans.

There are many plate structures along the seismic belt, including the Pacific plate, Antarctica plate, Australia plate, Indian plate, Eurasian plate, Philippines plate, North American plate, South American plate, Caribbean plate, etc. This seismic zone has the characteristics of large spatial span, complex tectonic background, and strong seismic activity.

my country is located in the western part of the Pacific Rim seismic belt. Due to the subduction of the Pacific plate to the Eurasian plate, the seismicity of my country’s northeast, north and southeast coastal areas is affected to a certain extent.ring.
