Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio is one of the oldest animation studios in Chinese history. Compared with the current animation production companies, it has a strong historical atmosphere! The 2D animations of that era were also called "art films", such as the familiar "Little Tadpoles Finding Mother", "Black Cat Sheriff", "Breaking Out in Heaven" and so on. They left a beautiful childhood for the 70s and 80s. However, behind these domestic animations that can expose the age of the audience, the animation directors behind them are not understood by the audience.
"Shuke and Beta" is a rookie's favorite domestic animation when he was a child. It is based on the novel of the fairy tale king Zheng Yuanjie. The director behind "Shu Ke and Beta" is called Yan Dingxian, born in 1936. If you use the current words, Yan Dingxian is one of the first batch of original artists in domestic animation. In 1961, Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio produced a full-color animated feature film "Nausea in Heaven", and Yan Dingxian was the chief animation designer at that time. The image of Monkey King is the self drawn by Teacher Yan in the mirror.
"Calabash Brothers" is believed to be familiar to friends born in the 80s and 90s, and has now become a classic in domestic animation. In fact, the earliest version of this domestic animation is a paper-cut animation. Its director is called Hu Jinqing, born in 1930. Hu Jinqing is one of the outstanding artists who created and developed Chinese paper-cut animation. He has won the Excellent Film Award of the Ministry of Culture, the Best Art Film Award of the Chinese Film Golden Rooster Award, the Best Short Film "Silver Bear Award" at the West Berlin International Film Festival, and Asian and African Films. Festival Lumumba Award and so on. However, it is a pity that such animation art expressions are now rare.
"Black Cat Sheriff", even if you show this domestic animation to children today, it is still very popular. Dai Tielang, known as the "Father of the Black Cat Sheriff", only became an animation director at the age of 49, but this five-episode "Black Cat Sheriff" has been popular for 30 years. Why is there only 5 episodes of "Black Cat Sheriff" so popular? There are two theories circulating in the market. The first is that Mr. Dai Tielang was suddenly notified to retire by the Shanghai Art Film Studio after finishing the fifth episode of "Black Cat Sheriff". The second argument is that a copyright dispute occurred in 1987 between Dai Tielang and Zhu Zhixiang, the author of the fairy tale "Black Cat Sheriff". However, the real reason is that "Black Cat Sheriff" happened to be at the node of Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio's era changes.
Before 1988, Shanghai Art Film Studio was the only professional animation manufacturer in China. The state allocated funds and assigned production targets without any market pressure. However, with the gradual formation of the TV market, foreign-funded or Sino-foreign joint venture animation production companies have been established one after another. Under the market economy of the animation industry, the Beijing Film Factory has lost a large amount of talents, the creative staff structure is faulted, the production capacity has seriously declined, and the benefits have declined. This has made the US Film Studio’s fixed targets for China Film Group unable to complete due to lack of talents, and on the other hand excellent foreign animations have flooded into the market, putting great pressure on economic benefits. In such a situation, "Black Cat Sheriff" is not profitable and has to stay in episode 5.
In 2010, the movie version of "Black Cat Sheriff" directed by Dai Tielang appeared on the big screen and won 15 million box office at the time. While making up for the audience's childhood regrets, it also fulfilled Teacher Dai Tielang's wish. On September 4, 2019, Dai Tielang died of illness at the age of 89.
Behind these three well-known domestic animations are three representative old artists of a generation. They have dedicated their lives to animation and left a beautiful childhood for several generations! They are pioneers on the rise of Guoman, but their names are not well known by the public. So just for the joy of childhood, we should also pay tribute to them!
