Speaking of Wuhan, I always think of Chi Li's paragraph in "The Demon of Midsummer":
Wuhan is such a place, slack, wayward, chivalrous, hot-tempered, strong-spirited, all over the world, Thousands of people, radish and cabbage, each has their own love, is indeed a good place to write novels.
In the hearts of many directors and movie fans, Wuhan is also a good place to make movies.
As a city full of rivers and lakes and fireworks, Wuhan has long been under the focus of the movie lens. However, in recent years, there have been only a handful of films in pure Wuhan dialect that have entered the public’s field of vision: "A Thousand Arrows Piercing the Heart", "The Gathering at Southern Station", "Jiangcheng Summer", "Li Wen's Roaming East Lake"...
If one day looks back on these years In the past of Wuhan movies, I think that 's pure Wuhan dialect movie "Vitality" , which will be released nationwide on the 16th of this month, may be mentioned by some people.

"Vitality" takes the flood fighting and disaster relief in 1998 as the background of the era, and uses realistic characters as prototypes to restore to the audience a picture of old Wuhan city customs in memory.
On March 24th, "Vitality" held a "Looking back on 98, Light Up "Vitality" theme event and main creative meeting" in Han, Better, as the co-organizer of the event, will record for everyone on the spot The story behind the scenes of this local movie.

This realistic film full of Wuhan dialects is not perfect, but it is enough to evoke deep memories of the city of Wuhan.
"Vitality" tells about the journey of self-growth that three ordinary people in Wuhan started with a tape after a natural disaster. The whole film is shot in Wuhan, combining cultural landmarks such as Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, Wuhan University, Lihuangpi Road, Hanzheng Street, Laoxinhua Bookstore, Wuhan Pass, and iconic Wuhan specialties such as Regan Noodles, Pork Ribs and Lotus Root Soup, cleverly blending with the plot .

/ The homes of several protagonists,They are all on this street in Tongxingli, Hankou. /
The old streets and alleys that appeared in the movie, the rough Wuhan yelling, are almost the same as the old Wuhan in my childhood memories. Across the screen, you can even imagine the fragrance of food floating in the alley during meals, and the shouts of adults calling children to go home for dinner.
Director Wu Dongmin told me that it took 7 months for the film to go from the selection to the set and encounter many difficulties such as street reconstruction.
However, in the process of film preparation and shooting, there are always neighbors helping out, and even some homestay owners took the initiative to suspend work on the half-renovated house and loan it to the crew for free as the home of the hero Qin Chuan.

Wu Dongmin said that compared to other places, the residents of Tongxingli Lane are very camera-conscious. They will see the director team downstairs filming. Put away the clothes rail, while leaning out from the window and rushing downstairs, shouting: "I will put the pole away, so as not to affect you."

After watching "Vitality", some people may wonder, what kind of movie is this? Disaster movie, romance movie, friendship movie, or family movie? It seems difficult to define this movie with one or two keywords.
In this regard, director Wu Dongmin explained: "It is not accurate to use these single words to interpret it. I prefer to describe it as a film about warmth. I don’t want to deliberately express the tragic nature of natural disasters, but rather through After the disaster, the three protagonists love and help each other’s ordinary life, to restore the most real world of Wuhan for everyone."

A lost singer (Qin Chuan) who wants to escape into an empty door, a thief who wants to be a policeman (Wu) Victory), a police orphan with autism (Dazhi).
The creation team of "Vitality" has gone through more than two years of meticulous polishing and rewritten the script six times. Under the guidance of experts in Wuhan dialects and local culture,Based on the self-growth and self-salvation stories of these three ordinary people in Wuhan after the disaster, they are connected to form a group of ordinary and tender figures.

/ The sister-in-law Ji Qing portrayed by the national first-level actor Tao Huimin in the film is indeed a person /
Compared to the personal growth history of several protagonists, the sister-in-law Ji Qing played by Tao Huimin can evoke me more Emotional resonance. In her, everyone in Wuhan can find the prototype of the old neighbourhood that we grew up with. She has quick hands and feet, and is enthusiastic. She has never bothered to hide the pride of being an old craftsman: "My house is very famous for its hot dry noodles. Hmm.”
In order to play the role of Ji Qing’s wife, Tao Huimin invited a master from a century-old shop in Wuhan to learn the art. Through repeated practice, he finally showed a series of professional actions in the movie to make hot and dry noodles.

When talking about the original intention of the film, Director Wu Dongmin said in an interview that he has lived in Wuhan since he was a child, and as he grows older, he finds that the more roads he has traveled, the deeper his feelings for his hometown. So from ten years ago, he sprouted the creation of an original film about the lives of Wuhan people.
"It can also be said that I want to pay tribute to Wuhan by making movies, and also to the extraordinary ordinary people of that era." Talking about his hometown feelings as a filmmaker, the director looked sincere.

It is said that when "Vitality" officially debuted at the Indian International Film Festival in 2019 and held its world premiere, the audience was moved by the sincere emotion of the film. The creative team sat in the last row of the theater and silently observed the audience's reaction. Someone was moved to tears.
At the screening event on March 24, Better invited a group of young viewers born in 1998 to watch the movie with us. During the interaction after the screening, one of them said that he was very grateful for such a film that truly tells the old Wuhan, so that young people who were not born at that time could understand Wuhan at that time.
The Wuhan dialect that runs through the whole movie also gave the whole movie scene a wonderful chemical reaction. In some places that "should be moved", some young viewers accidentally laughed.

/ During the viewing session of the movie "Vitality" /
Some people say,This movie tells the world a Chinese story full of love and self-sacrifice.
But I think it's better to say that this is a hymn dedicated to hometown by the director, or that is a time shuttle dedicated to myself and to the audience, leading us back to the 90s in the memory of the old Wuhan people S.
