Therefore, it is a big challenge to let primary school students understand the "Yangtze River", as well as the terrain and landforms related to the Yangtze River, and the role played by the Yangtze River.
How can children understand the Yangtze River more vividly? Teachers and students of Dongshu Huayu Primary School in Jinjiang District, Chengdu moved nearly 500 kilograms of soil into the campus, recreating the Yangtze River in the form of clay sculptures, and realizing the style and spirit of "coming from the snow-capped mountains and running towards the East China Sea" in the classroom.

In the campus of Dongshu Huayu Primary School, the big break is a stage for students to show themselves. During this period of time, the school has always encouraged students to use the earth as canvas and stones as picture albums, and to display all their favorites, learnings and creations on campus, with rich content and diverse forms. In order to create an atmosphere of learning and communication on campus, the school has also specially determined the campus public display time for students during Wednesday morning breaks, so that students can show their interests and achievements.
At the campus public display time last week, Class 1 of Grade 6 decided to show their interest and learning achievements during the break - "Yangtze River".
But the problem is, the total length is more than 6,000 kilometers, spans the third-level terrain, and there are so many tributaries winding. How to display it more intuitively?
28 students decided to use soil to reshape the original scenery of the Yangtze River.
teachers and students worked together to pull back nearly 500 kilograms of soil from the farm near the school, and cooperated in groups, from the first step to the second step to the third step, moving bricks and carrying mud, starting from the Gradandong Snow Mountain, the main peak of the Tanggula Mountains at an altitude of 6,621 meters, from west to east, "reappearing" the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Hengduan Mountains, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Sichuan Basin, Chongqing Linggu, Jianghan Plain and other terrain, concentrating the Yangtze River more than 6,000 kilometers into a 5-meter clay sculpture work.
And, after this clay sculpture was completed, the students poured water from " Yangtze River Source " with their own hands, and then watched the "Yangtze River Water" rushing all the way. The children couldn't help but sing " Yangtze River Song " again. With the slow singing, they saw the changes in the water flow, from the plateau to the flat ground, from turbulent to soothing. The city it flowed through not only deeply understood "you come from the snow-capped mountains", but also felt the momentum of "the endless Yangtze River rolling".

Art teacher Liu, who organized this display event, said that the Yangtze River has a complex and diverse terrain, a vast basin area, and many cities. At the same time, the extremely high temperature weather this summer has also made people realize the role of the Yangtze River in my country in production and life.
However, some of these complex theoretical knowledge, for the sixth grade primary school students, are actually not difficult. Therefore, it is hoped that through practice, children can feel more deeply and clearly why the Yangtze River is known as the mother river of China.
At the same time, during the creation process, the children constantly explored and adjusted by checking which "terrain" is too high and which "distance" is too far. Finally, while completing this "massive project", they also had a more intuitive understanding of the terrain along the Yangtze River and even the entire China.
It is understood that this classroom display is actually one of the parts of the school’s geography class “Hometown Geography”.The school has corresponding geography courses starting from the fourth grade, allowing students to start by drawing a class map and then expand to campus, city, country, world, etc.
Among them, children in the fourth grade will start to look outside the campus. By the fifth grade, we have to expand from outside the campus to Chengdu and Sichuan. In the sixth grade, the vision of "hometown geography" must go beyond Sichuan and expand to the whole country. This is a gradual process. Before claying the Yangtze River, the students had already done campus topographic maps and Sichuan topographic maps, and this time they were very comfortable to do.
Of course, because the Yangtze River also flows through Sichuan, this class also focused on explaining Sichuan's location in China, topography, etc., so that children can better understand issues such as why Chengdu is called the Kingdom of Heaven.

Teacher Liu said that when taking the "Cute Sichuan" hometown geography class, he talked about terrain and landforms such as first-level stairs and second-level stairs. When the children were doing this Yangtze River, they already had a concept of which are plateaus, mountains, and plains from west to east. Of course, in this process, art teachers will also assist the children, such as placing stones underneath to raise the terrain to express the mountains. In addition, because some are not common green vegetation, but minerals, etc., apply soil on the corresponding mountain ranges.
The whole process was completed in about 2 hours, two classes were completed. The students divide the work and cooperate, and every student must join. In this process, the most difficult thing to understand is the construction of hydropower stations, including the necessity of their construction, the reasons for their site selection, the role they play, etc. But the teachers all said, "Don't worry, let the children understand slowly."
The most exciting scene to Teacher Liu is, "When ' Yangtze River water ' surged down from 'Tanggula Mountain', the children spontaneously sang "Song of the Yangtze River" on the spot. The natural love for their hometown and motherland is so touching."
