McMaster University (McMaster University, Mac) is located west of the downtown area of Hamilton, and is separated from the city center by the 403 Expressway. Perhaps this highway diverts the main traffic of the city. The Dundas Valley area where the school is located has become very quiet. It is said that this is the best residential area in Hamilton. There are many forest waterfalls in the area. The campus is only about 30 acres, which is not large in scale but has a good view.
McMaster University started with the Toronto Baptist College founded by the Christian Baptist Church in 1881. When the British colonial government promoted the integration of Ontario educational resources in the late 19th century, Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College seminary merged to form a university in 1887. After accepting a bonus of assets by William McMaster, President of the Canadian Commercial Bank, the school was named McMaster University. The campus was originally set up in the McMaster Hall building adjacent to the campus of University of Toronto, and its professional courses were limited to theology, humanities and medical care.
McMaster University is facing financial constraints in its early stages of school operation. First, McMaster Hall teaching building in Toronto has long been overcrowded but lacks funds to expand the campus. Hamilton city has developed rapidly but lacks strong colleges and universities. With the call and donation of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and citizens, Baptist Church raised a fund to finally move the school to Hamilton. Toronto school property was sold to University of Toronto , and is now the seat of The Royal Conservatory of Music. Another difficulty encountered by McMaster is that the funding is serious inadequate in the field of scientific research. The law has prohibited the government from providing financial support to church schools. The church cannot provide a large amount of funds for scientific research projects. In order to change the passive situation, the school has introduced a reform measure: merge liberal arts and theology to form University College, and divest science and engineering to establish an independent Hamilton that is not owned by the church. After McMaster's restructuring, funds began to pour in large quantities. The school's infrastructure and scientific research facilities developed very quickly. In order to enable the humanities to develop in parallel, McMaster University was reorganized again in 1957, disbanding the original two colleges and giving all its assets to the Enrolled in the university, McMaster University has become a completely independent educational institution, and the Baptist Church only retains the ownership of a seminary affiliated to the university.
McMaster University ranks among the top in the Canadian university rankings published by various institutions, and often the ranking is better than the University of Waterloo, thanks to a large number of high-level scientific research work. McMaster owns an nuclear reactor, , ranks first in the Commonwealth national university and second in North American universities. It provides services for research and teaching in the fields of nuclear engineering , medicine and health physics, and other applied radiation sciences. It also has supporting cyclotron accelerators, accelerators, small-angle neutron scattering detectors and wide-angle neutron scattering facilities for the production of medical isotopes and novel molecular imaging agents. Professor McMaster Bertram Brockhouse and MIT professor Clifford Shull won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics for research on neutron scattering technology of condensed matter.
McMaster has a branch campus in downtown Hamilton and surrounding cities, but Hamilton seems to be unable to provide sufficient land supply, and it still faces serious constraints in terms of future development space.
