Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, April 22 (Hu Lele) On April 22, Xinhua Daily Telegraph published a comment titled "Universities should give up quick success and long-term care".
Recently, several young and middle-aged natural science backbone scientific research teachers in colleges and universities who were funded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars have passed away. In addition, in the past two years, several famous professors in the humanities and social sciences who were under the age of 60 died, which caused everyone to sigh and discuss. Some laymen are watching "lively" and feel that "Desperate Saburo" is commendable but unacceptable; but we experts are watching "doorway"-their early death reveals that the current employment, salary, and assessment system of university teachers in our country is in "supportive care". There are still deficiencies in the "Scholar".
University teachers are not equal to scientific researchers. Their primary job responsibility is teaching, not research. However, some universities currently use various unreasonable assessment mechanisms, forcing teachers to focus on research and teaching as a supplement. Many university teachers are tired of completing various tasks stipulated in the employment contract - what level to obtain, how much to apply for a project, what level of talent project to be selected, how many papers to publish in international and domestic high-level journals, etc.
In order to encourage teachers to invest more in scientific research and to continuously improve the influence and ranking of scientific research in the fierce competition between domestic and foreign universities, many universities have formulated a system of hiring, remuneration and assessment of teachers with heavy tasks and difficult completion.
and the "double first-class" construction, to a certain extent, has intensified the fierce competition, forcing some universities to further seek quick success. Therefore, when recruiting teachers and re-employing teachers, some universities clearly link the salary of teachers with the level of scientific research tasks completed during the employment period. If the tasks of the employment period cannot be completed, they may ask for a refund or low employment, and in severe cases, they will be dismissed immediately or not renewed. Therefore, seemingly glamorous university teachers and students are reduced to "scientific research workers".The development of
University certainly needs scientific research support, but the quick success will lead to the health danger of talents, the lack of stamina for the development of natural sciences, and the difficulty of producing masters in the humanities and social sciences.
For the natural sciences, the pursuit of short-term results will seriously inhibit the development of basic research. Applied research can produce results in a short period of time, but basic research requires many years of accumulation. Basic research is the foundation of natural science research. If the foundation is not laid well, the technological development of the entire country will be severely limited. In recent years, some fields in our country have encountered the "stuck neck" dilemma, which is essentially related to the weakness of basic research in our country due to the long-term prevalence of short-term utilitarianism in scientific research.
As for humanities and social sciences research, universities try to complete the development of humanities and social sciences research with just three to five years of engineering project management, which objectively does not conform to the general laws of humanities and social sciences development in ancient and modern China and abroad. We cannot expect to complete a project of the National Social Science Foundation in three to five years, or produce a book that can stand the test of time, or cultivate a master who will be remembered in history.
From this point of view, it is time for our universities to abandon short-term utilitarianism in the employment of teachers and the management of scientific research.
Universities should run schools with the mindset of "nursery". It should be noted that young and middle-aged university teachers are not only university talents, but also national and national talents. Young and middle-aged teachers who die young are a loss to the nation and the country. Universities should allow young and middle-aged talents to devote themselves to teaching, educating and doing scientific research in a loose system, instead of being exhausted and exhausted to complete the scientific research tasks during the employment period.
Running a university is not a construction project, and managing a university is not managing a company. Universities should strictly enter the "Nashi" according to high standards, and carefully "raise the nurses" while the pressure is not too great. Let more talents make real high-quality research results in the tempering of time, and make real contributions to the development of human knowledge and theoretical update.(The author is a teacher in Shaanxi University)
