The current physics department can be traced back to a long and rich history: its earliest predecessor was the Straits Colony and the Federal Malayan State Government Medical College established in 1904. It was renamed Raffles College in 1929 and became a formal university in University of Malaya in 1949. In 1962, it was further renamed to the University of Singapore and merged with Nanyang University in 1980 to establish National University of Singapore . It is worth mentioning that famous physicists have visited the department, such as Paul A. M. Dirac - his photos during a speech are still displayed in the department's conference room.

Until around 1990, the department was basically a teaching department with no research activities. At that time, the National University of Singapore began to transform into a research university. Over the past 20 years, we have made great efforts to develop our research capabilities, which is now classified as "research-intensive". Below we list the current main research directions:

nanoscience physics

condensed matter and advanced materials

biophysics

nonlinear and complex systems physics

atom , molecular physics (including nonlinear optics)

calculation and theoretical physics html l6 (including string theory, cosmology, particle physics , etc.)

We have several unique groups, first of which is the Center for Quantum Technology (CQT), which originated from the Department of Physics and is now an independent research center, and is the first Research Centre for Excellence (RCE) funded by the Singapore government. Recently, the Advanced Two-Dimensional Materials and Graphene Research Center was established to take the lead in conducting research on graphene and two-Dimensional Materials. The Center for Ion Beam Applications (CIBA) is a unique entity specializing in Ion Beam applications. Many of our teachers have very active research programs and have produced high-impact research work. Some of them hold editorial positions in prestigious magazines and are elite members of professional organizations (such as researchers at APS or IoP).

physics is one of the most basic sciences of all sciences and the basis of our scientific knowledge about the physical world. It attempts to explain the behavior of matter, time and space in the universe, covering a variety of phenomena from subnuclear interactions to cosmological events such as the Big Bang.

Physics research is the basis of many key discoveries in the 20th century, including lasers, television, radio, computer technology and nuclear weapons . Physics has played an important role in the development of quantum theory , relativity and atomic division.

Course Structure and Course Principles

Physics Undergraduate Degree provides a solid foundation covering core topics such as atomic and nuclear physics; electromagnetics ; nanophysics; quantum mechanics ; relativity; condensed matter physics ; thermodynamics ; and related mathematical methods .

By studying classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetics, thermodynamics, atomic and nuclear physics, nanophysics and relativity, students will gain theoretical and experimental skills to solve complex problems.

Students can also choose the following majors. astrophysics , mainly studies astrophysics and cosmology; nanophysics, mainly studies the scientific principles behind nano-scale materials with advanced functions; and quantum technology, mainly studies the foundations of quantum mechanics and its applications in sensing, communication, computing and cryptography .

Employment prospects

Physics graduates have high demands in different fields. These skills include computational and mathematical literacy, problem solving, complex ideas for communicating, and a broader understanding of how the world works on a scientific and human level.

This series of skills can be applied to scientific and non-technical fields, including defense, education, engineering, health care, materials and technology sectors.Many physics graduates work in research positions in many industries, while others have fulfilling careers in private and public sector .
