2022 World City Day Global Home Event and the Second Global Conference on Urban Sustainable Development opened in Shanghai a few days ago. The theme of this World City Day is "Action, Going from Local to Global", and is jointly organized by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Shanghai Municipal People's Government, , and United Nations Human Habitat .
Themed "Act Local to Go Global," the Global Observance of World Cities Day 2022 and the Second Sustainable Development Goals Cities Global Conference were co-hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Shanghai municipal government and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, with an opening ceremony held in Shanghai on Oct 31.

World City Day is the first international day with cities as the theme of the United Nations, and it is also the first international day promoted by the Chinese government at the United Nations. In 2010, China proposed the initiative to establish World City Day on the Shanghai World Expo . In 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly passed a resolution, deciding to set October 31 of each year as "World City Day" from 2014. In 2014, the world's first "World City Day" event will be held in Shanghai. This year, the global home event on World City Day returned to its birthplace of Shanghai after 8 years.
On October 31, the 2022 World City Day Global Home Event and the Second Global Conference on Urban Sustainable Development opened in Shanghai a few days ago. The opening ceremony introduced the Global Sustainable Development City Award (Shanghai Award) and the "Shanghai Index". It is reported that in order to better promote the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Human Habitat, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government jointly established the Global Sustainable Development City Award (Shanghai Award), aiming to commend outstanding cities that have made outstanding progress in the field of sustainable development. The first award will be awarded in 2023. The "Shanghai Index" aims to measure the progress of global cities' sustainable development. It is currently conducting pilot applications in more than 20 global cities participating in the UN Sustainable Development Goals City Flagship Project.
