Tan Sitong is from a famous family and has both civil and military affairs. His father, , Tan Jixun, was the governor of Hubei at that time and was considered a magistrate of the border. He could have escaped, but he stayed in Beijing with the belief that he will die. Reason 1: I hope that relatives and friends will not be implicated. Tan Sitong left a letter imitating his father's handwriting to write a letter that cut off the relationship between father and son. When he notified Liang Qichao and others to leave Beijing, he said, "There is no dead, no way to seek the future; there is no way to attract future generations without living." After Tan Sitong's death, Tan Jixun wrote a couplet to his son, "The rumor is everywhere in the nine states of the country, it is nothing more than a scolding; the sudden success will last for thousands of years, and it is unknown."
