Sources said whether LG Display can win the deal will be decided in about two weeks.
This is the first time LG Display has tried to commercialize its LTPO TFT (thin film transistor) OLED. Its rival Samsung Display commercialized the technology back in 2020 and is already making panels for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
It is reported that samples provided by LG Display to Apple's headquarters show that it has problems with film packaging and holes on the top of the front camera.
Sources said the company had to replace some of the materials used in the production process, and the new samples after the change are undergoing reliability testing.
If Apple refuses to accept new samples within two weeks, LG Display will have to go through another similar process. This will result in a delay of another two weeks to one month.
If approved in early October, LG Display can start mass production immediately, thereby winning more orders for it.
Samsung Display ordered more equipment to make LTPO OLEDs due to unexpected increase in demand caused by competitor setbacks.
Currently, Apple uses LTPO OLED panels in its Pro models, while the standard version and Plus models use low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) panels that are easier to manufacture than LTPO OLEDs. (Proofreading/Li Pei)
