The Huawei nova 10 Pro puts a lot of emphasis on cameras, and that’s evident by the number of them – there are two on the front, a 60MP ultra-wide-angle selfie shooter and an 8MP portrait selfie shooter. On the other hand, if we include the 2MP depth sensor, we get three more - a 50MP wide-angle shooter and an 8MP ultra-wide to do the actual work.
nova 10 Pro Photos of the prominent camera bump don’t do it justice. You need to see this thing with your own eyes - it's a two-part element with different heights. It's a nice touch and we love the not-so-subtle gold accents that and Huawei call the star track ring and it's gorgeous.
The silver color of the back panel of the phone is also very cool. It takes on a different accent color than its surroundings, sometimes ending up purple.
Despite weighing only 191g, the Huawei nova 10 Pro feels light. This could be due to good balance, or it could be a change in our perception because we've dealt with so many larger phones from the Pro Max and Ultra camps.
The picture is very cute. It's a 6.78-inch OLED with rich colors and contrast, a fast 120Hz refresh rate, and high brightness. The edges have a very noticeable curvature, with the display spilling out to the sides.
Before we get to the camera, let’s talk about another key feature of the Huawei nova 10 Pro – the battery and, more importantly – charging. The battery capacity is 4,500mAh and supports 100W charging, charging from 20% to 80% in just 10 minutes. We tested this and it's correct. What's even more impressive is that the phone didn't get overheated in the process. If you want to give up all the safety and thermal management that's protected your battery over the years, you can force the Huawei nova 10 Pro to charge at a constant 100W by tapping the charging animation - fine in a pinch, just don't do it every day.
Another great thing? The 100W charger comes in the box, something that is becoming more rare these days.
Okay, let's look at the camera. The main 50MP camera pixel box converts to 12MP stills and can do double duty as a 5x telephoto replacement. The lens in front of the sensor is a 27mm f/1.8 lens, one of the narrower "wide-angle" lenses around, although still considered a standard wide-angle lens . The so-called ultrawide also falls within the narrow spectrum of its 16mm counterpart. It's a fixed focus sensor with an f/2.2 lens on the front.
When it comes to selfies, we have two sensors but four modes. The 60MP unit is 17mm wide, so it's ultrawide again, and can shoot at 0.7x (17mm) or 1x (24mm) - both with a wide-angle look. The other selfie camera is an 8MP "portrait" shooter that shoots both native 52mm and an enlarged 130mm mode that we think should never be used.
We'll reserve our formal judgment for the full review, but we'll share some quick thoughts on the images below. The main camera captures contrasting images with deep shadows and well-exposed highlights. There's slight haloing, with highlights rolling into shadows, a sign of an overly aggressive HDR algorithm. The color is natural and slightly understated. There's no noise at all in the main camera photos, and there's a bit of sharpening , a bit too much actually.
The ultra-wide lens on the rear continues the trend of over-sharpening and natural color reproduction, but it doesn't push the shadows down quite as much. It also has different white balance methods.
The off-camera 17mm selfie snaps from the 60MP front camera are excellent. Dynamic range is very good, with plenty of detail that doesn't suffer from noise reduction and over-sharpening. nice one.
