Lithium iron phosphate battery "like a fish in water" wave of ship electrification sweeps and accelerates

The wave of

electrification is rapidly sweeping across the ship sector. Electric ships have the advantages of environmental protection, zero pollution, safety and low cost of use. With the increasingly stringent environmental protection policies and the continuous improvement of lithium battery technology, it is expected that the electrification of ships will enter a period of rapid development in the next few years, and pure electric ships will become the mainstream direction of development.

Recently, the first lithium battery-powered cruise ship in the South Lake Scenic Area of Jiaxing officially started construction at Jiaxing Weijia Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The cruise ship uses a relatively safe lithium iron phosphate battery, and because the battery itself has no vibration source, the ship is basically no noise when sailing, only the sound of the propeller flapping water.

After using lithium batteries, the cruise ship’s endurance is increased by more than 100% compared with the existing traditional lead-acid batteries. The positive and negative electrodes of traditional lead-acid batteries are composed of lead and its oxides. The electrolyte is sulfuric acid, which is used in production and recycling. During the process, improper operation will cause damage to the water body and soil ecology, and the lithium iron phosphate battery will not cause significant damage to the human body and the environment during the product life cycle.

It is understood that the current lithium battery capacity of a new energy vehicle averages 40-50 degrees, while the battery capacity of a luxury electric cruise ship is around 3000 degrees. The continuous expansion of the application fields of lithium batteries is crucial for battery companies. Research and Markets predicts that the global electric ship market will reach more than 45 billion yuan in 2024; the market prospect is very broad.

Yiwei/Ningde/Guoxuan stepped up the layout

In fact, many battery companies have accelerated the layout of lithium battery ships this year. Just last month, the construction of the first pure electric port tugboat in China was officially started in Lianyungang. The ship uses a lithium iron phosphate power battery pack from Yiwei Lithium Energy. The ship can use two modes of fast charging and slow charging, fast charging can be fully charged in 2 hours, and slow charging can be fully charged in 6-8 hours. In addition, the first electric high-end inland river cruise ship "Minjiang Star" in Fujian Province also successfully made its maiden voyage. The ship’s power battery system uses Ningde era large-capacity, high-safety lithium iron phosphate batteries, equipped with 936kWh of electricity, and can run continuously for 8 hours.

Earlier in June of this year, Yiwei Lithium Energy signed an agreement with Shanghai Hanshun Shipping. The project created the world’s largest batch of new energy bulk carriers (18 vessels) and the world’s largest single ship of new energy bulk carriers. Ship (5400 tons), the world's largest river-sea combined transport new energy bulk cargo fleet has three world records. Compared with ordinary merchant ships of the same type, it can save about 30% of operating costs.

In May of this year, China's first maritime emergency command ship for dangerous goods, "Deep Sea 01", was successfully launched in Guangzhou. The ship is equipped with a lithium-ion power battery system from the Ningde era. Each set of lithium iron phosphate batteries has a capacity of 750kWh and a total of 1.5MWh lithium iron phosphate batteries. Ningde Times stated that the launch of "Deep Sea 01" also marked the successful rollout of the first marine ship power battery system of the Ningde Times.

In April of this year, the "Kuo Kuo Zhen Princess Pure Electric Cruise Ship" powered by Yiwei Lithium Energy started construction in Guangzhou. It is reported that the ship will use lithium iron phosphate batteries with a capacity of 1.5MWh. Prior to this, Yiwei Lithium Energy also signed a 280-seat "Blue Dolphin Electric Cruise" project. The battery core is lithium iron phosphate and the battery capacity is 2.5MWh.

As of October this year, the total installed capacity of Yiwei lithium-energy marine batteries exceeded 50MWh, providing power battery systems for more than 200 new energy ships. "The distance between ports and cities is getting closer and closer. In order to reduce the impact of pollution on the coastal waters and residents, Yiwei Lithium actively promotes the technological innovation of marine power lithium batteries and power systems, and promotes the conversion of oil to electricity and lead-acid ships in many parts of the country. The battery is switched to lithium battery for work." said Liu Jincheng, chairman and president of Yiwei Lithium Energy.

It is not difficult to see that Yiwei Lithium Energy and CATL are very active in the field of electric ships. In addition, Guoxuan Hi-Tech is also actively involved in electric ships. In March of this year, Shanghai Guoxuan Wuyang Ship Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Guoxuan Hi-Tech, won the first batch of 3 ship sets of ship power lithium battery system orders. This is also the first batch of system orders obtained by Guoxuan Hi-Tech since entering the ship power lithium battery market. .

Lithium iron phosphate "like a fish in water"

The application fields of electric ships and electric vehicles are very different, and the performance requirements of lithium batteries are also different. From the current point of view, whether it is the first lithium battery-powered cruise ship in Nanhu Scenic Area in Jiaxing, or Yiwei Lithium Energy, Ningde Times,The electric ships deployed by Guoxuan Hi-Tech all use lithium iron phosphate batteries without exception. This is obviously not a coincidence.

lithium iron phosphate battery has good safety, long cycle performance, good high temperature stability and low cost, and is the best choice for ship power batteries at this stage. At present, the price of lithium iron phosphate batteries has dropped to 0.6 yuan/Wh, which is economical in the field of ship applications. In terms of safety, lithium iron phosphate power batteries and BMS battery management systems have developed rapidly in recent years. The increase in charging and discharging rates has enabled ships to start acceleration and power handling better, and has the technical conditions for promotion and application on ships.

"Lithium iron phosphate battery has become the best choice for marine power batteries at this stage due to its high safety, long life, low cost, balanced performance and other advantages. CATL has overcome safety, long battery life, high power and long life. For technical problems, the battery pack system is designed to use a battery pack that meets the IP67 protection level, which can effectively avoid the safety risks caused by water vapor, salt spray and dust, and meet the IP level requirements throughout the life cycle." said Wu Kai, vice president of Ningde Times .

In fact, not only electric ships, but also the advantages of lithium iron phosphate in other fields are gradually emerging. Cost and safety will continue to be the first consideration for battery suppliers in a variety of battery application scenarios. It is foreseeable that the sphere of influence of lithium iron phosphate will grow rapidly in the future.

According to the analysis of the Wood Mackenzie report by the international research organization, the share of lithium iron phosphate system batteries in the electrochemical storage market was 10% in 2015, and then its market share has rapidly increased, and its market share is expected to exceed 30% by 2030.
