According to foreign media reports, Toyota announced more information about the next-generation Toyota 86 at an American dealer meeting. It is reported that the new car will be named GR 86, positioned between Toyota's new crossover and the new CUV, and will be the first to be released in the US market in July 2021.

According to reports, Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ will continue to share the new platform. Although the current models are built on the Subaru platform, Subaru’s current architecture is not suitable for rear-drive models, so The new car will be built on the Toyota TNGA platform.

In terms of power, the Toyota 86 currently on sale uses a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with a maximum power of 147kW and a peak torque of 205N·m; it will be replaced by Subaru Ascent and Legacy in the US market in the future The 2.4-liter horizontally opposed turbocharged four-cylinder engine used by (called Legacy in China) and Outback (called Outback in China).
