[Original by Dongchedi Industry] According to foreign media reports, Hyundai and Kia Automobile applied for a new patent: crotch airbag to solve the driver and occupant injuries caused by irregular seat belt wear in collision accidents.

It is understood that due to factors such as gravity, poor posture and car vibration, the seat belt often slides through the occupant's pelvis, causing smaller occupants to easily slide under the harness during a collision, or damage to internal organs due to sudden tightening of the seat belt.
For this reason, some automakers will use knee airbags and seat side airbags to reduce the above effects, but these only minimize the damage caused and are not completely eliminated.
And Hyundai and Kia patents filed for airbags can be deployed between the occupant's thighs to lock the occupant in a proper position in the event of an accident so that it does not slide forward from the seat.

It is reported that the two key elements of the patent are the shape of the airbag and load sensing technology. The new system can measure the exact position of the occupant on the seat base. Depending on the occupant's hip position, weight distribution and position in the seat, the airbag will deploy at a variable rate to provide maximum stability for the passenger or driver.
If the occupant is detected to be in the right position, or if the airbag deployment may cause greater damage, the system may decide not to deploy the airbag.

According to the picture, the hip airbag in the new patent is arranged in a "T" shape, with a slender inflatable support part rising from the leading edge of the seat cushion, and a connected inflatable crossbar on the top, and both ends are fixed by fabric tethers.
Upright support section will ensure that the occupant can be firmly held in place, the horizontal section is deployed above the occupant's thighs to ensure that the legs remain in the seat, and the tether will inhibit lateral movement of the occupant's legs, further reducing the risk of injury.
It is understood that in the future, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brand cars may adopt this type of airbag design.
